E-Mail Of The Day

From: Peter Asher
Subject: RE: Paul Shaffer’s Book

Dear Bob,

I have just ordered the book from Amazon.  Sounds great.  (I still read real books at home for choice – electronic only for travelling. I am a Sony guy.)

I can attest to the fact that Paul really CAN play (and remember) anything – and play it right!  And yet he never, despite having the chops of a true  virtuoso, falls into the trap of looking down on the limited skills of some rock and rollers, realizing that some people can be more creative with three chords than other skilled musicians are with a thousand.  And every time I have had a client on Letterman he has been a meticulous accompanist and band leader.

Indeed, it was Paul’s admiration for Mike Smith of the Dave Clark Five which propelled him to convince Gordon and me to get back together for a benefit after a 38 year hiatus.  I owe Paul a great debt of gratitude for asking – Gordon and I went on to do a number of gigs together after that benefit just for the fun of it and thus re-established both our professional relationship and our friendship before Gordon died.

Looking forward to the book.

Peter
