Check This Out

From: Mike Greene

While looking for innovative ways to present work/goods/catalog items… I came across this one, which is pretty damn great! HEMA is a Dutch department store. The first store opened on November 4, 1926, in Amsterdam. In June of this year, HEMA was sold to British investment company Lion Capital. Take a look at HEMA’s product page. You can’t order anything, and it’s in Dutch, but just wait a couple of seconds and watch what happens…

Now check out a major label site…

What’s missing from the music business is the sole element that makes a difference, creativity. It’s about conception. That’s why we still look at the work of Picasso and the great Impressionists. Not because it took them so long to make their paintings, but because we’re infatuated with their minds, how did they come up with this stuff?

How do you create something that blows people’s minds? If you do, the money will follow.

Kind of like Google. It wasn’t the flashiest site, but somehow it always came up with the right result. It even evidenced a cheekiness absent from the corporate search engines, with its "I’m Feeling Lucky" button. You click that, and you get the EXACT result you’re looking for. Most of the time anyway.

You kept entering search terms in the window, to see if it knew… How did it know?

I could explain algorithms to you, but you probably hated high school math too much to understand. And that’s why Sergey and Larry are rich, have a 767 as their private plane, and you’re fretting about gas prices and paying $15 baggage fees to the airline.

Most truly rich people got that way by breaking the rules, by doing it differently. If you’re so interested in money, why are you doing it the same damn way? Why are you finding a pretty face, matching her with the producer du jour, making a video, sending out press releases and trying to get her on the radio? Where’s the innovation? Where’s the creativity?

Want to create buzz? Do something like this on your Website. The word of mouth will be astounding. If it even makes the mainstream news, it will be after the online hysteria has died down. Online is like the music of the sixties, the older generation, the parents and their news organs, are out of the loop. And kids don’t care.

Invest in your Website. If you utilize Flash, don’t have an entrance page, use it on your true homepage, like this site. Don’t do something expensive, do something cool. Cool is your ticket to success.
