Kickstarter

It doesn’t matter if you know who Julia Nunes is, or whether you like her music, she’s got fans who want to support her, want to hear more, and one can argue quite strongly she’s better off doing it all by her lonesome as opposed to tying up with a big corporation, i.e. a major label.

Would she end up with more cash in her pocket on a major?

Probably not.

Would she have creative freedom on a major?

Probably not.

Would she be tied up for a long period of time on a major?

Yes.

The major wants to reach everyone, that’s its policy. Making money by spreading the word. But what if most people just aren’t interested?

If you’re using Kickstarter to kickstart your career to a higher level, don’t raise the money. If you’re using Kickstarter to create something that gives back to the fans who ponied up, fire away!

Everybody wants to get bigger. But that’s got nothing to do with money and everything to do with fans.

Julia Nunes has fans. Do you?

P.S. Julia Nunes raised in excess of $77,000!

P.P.S. The reason that the music business establishment constantly talks down the Internet, spreads word it is the enemy, is because of this. The power to be bypassed. The old model is dead, long live the new model.
