Steve Jobs’ Response

He’s not impossible to get ahold of, he reads his e-mail and every so often, he gives a response.  And the "Telegraph" has assembled some of his choice retorts.

But I’m only gonna focus on one:

Question: I have to pay Apple to see if my water-damaged MacBook Pro can be fixed?

Steve Jobs’ answer: This is what happens when your MacBook Pro sustains water damage. They are pro machines and they don’t like water. It sounds like you’re just looking for someone to get mad at other than yourself.

Wow, doesn’t that make you want to stand up and applaud?  In a culture where everybody with a public profile apologizes after speaking the truth?  In a land where everybody wants to tug you down to their level?  In a country where no one can accept responsibility for their actions?

Costco had a generous return policy on electronics, but they had to shorten the window because customers would use an iPod for a year and then return it as defective when a new one was released.

Huh?

Why is everybody such a scumbag.

I dropped my BlackBerry in a gutter.  Didn’t even occur to me to contact RIM to tell them it was their fault.

But instead of worrying about backlash, instead of drinking at the fountain of Tony Hsieh, saying the customer is always right (and I’m now sick of Mr. Zappos, I thought you were running a shoe company, not a cult of personality, now you’ve written a book?), Steve Jobs came back bluntly, with the obvious, the truth.

This is what rock stars used to do.  Before they were afraid of the press, of some micro group that would protest. And their handlers are even worse, worried about their incomes they tell their charges to be bland, to saw off all rough edges so no one will be offended, so they can sell more product.

But whose stock would you prefer to own, Warner’s or Apple’s?  As for Universal and Sony, they’re so buried in conglomerates that they don’t even take chances, if only they flew alone, then they’d make changes…got to give Warner props for at least realizing they’re in a new world.

If you’re smart, if you’re talented, if you’re right, if you’re hounded by people trying to bring you down, demanding your time and attention, you can afford to be direct.  Because truth cuts through the bullshit.

I’ve got no sympathy for this MacBook Pro owner.  Shit, I treat my MacBook Pro like gold, I know how much it costs, I won’t even put a drink near it.  I mean if you’re spending $2500, don’t you…

Rock stars are anti-heroes.  They don’t do it everybody else’s way, but their own.

And what kind of fucked up world do we live in where the biggest rock star on the planet makes inert objects, doesn’t even play music?

And you wonder why the music business is in trouble…
