I was cruising up 20th Street, pushing the buttons on my XM Commander, and I ended up on Deep Tracks.  Whatever was on caught my ear, because I stayed there.  Deep Tracks has got me.  It’s my musical history.  I trust it.  So, when the next record started to play, I didn’t push the button, but let her rip.

After a couple of days of rain, it was a glorious day.  And this new song that was playing.  It wasn’t in my face, it wasn’t trying to get my attention.  Rather it was an ACCOMPANIMENT!  It was a soundtrack.  It set my mind adrift.

I’d never heard it before.  But I recognized the name on the readout, Brian Auger.  That guy with the album covers with the locomotive, representing his Oblivion Express.  He had a good rep back in the day, but I never bought any of his albums, because I couldn’t afford them.  I couldn’t afford to experiment with my money.  What I purchased had to stick.  So, this was the first time I was hearing this track, "Bumpin’ On Sunset".

Fire up your P2P app.  It’s not hard to find.  Download "Bumpin’ On Sunset" and listen.  It will push that relax button in you.  The one you sometimes forget you have.  The one only MUSIC can reach.  "Bumpin’ On Sunset" goes on for ten minutes.  An aural excursion.  Not that I knew how long it was when it started on XM, I was just glad it didn’t END!  Because I didn’t want the mood, the JOY to end.

I reached into the glove box for a pen.  And then over my shoulder into the backseat for a piece of paper.  I wanted to write this one down.

And when I got back from my adventures, and I fired up my P2P app, I was surprised to find that Brian Auger didn’t write "Bumpin’ On Sunset", rather Wes Montgomery did.

I was a fan of Weather Report.  And, I bought "Inner Mounting Flame".  But really, I’m not a jazz guy.  I know Wes Montgomery’s name, but not his music.  And it was interesting to hear Wes’ take.  Still, Brian Auger’s version wasn’t just a cover.  Rather than Wes’ guitar, Brian’s organ is featured.  The song has a different feel.  Silky.  For all those people who bought "Silk Degrees" back in the seventies, THIS is the kind of music the people MAKING those records listened to and were inspired BY!
