Low-key buzz to Starbucks’ first music release<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nPlaying McCartney 24\/7…\u00c2\u00a0 Sounds good on paper, people buy music when they hear it, but is Paul pissing off more people than he’s pleasing?<\/p>\n
In the above Seattle "Post-Intelligencer" article, thirty two year old Starbucks customer Melanie Hernandez says: <\/p>\n
"It feels a little bit like it’s being shoved down my throat."<\/p>\n
And you wonder why people gave up on terrestrial radio.\u00c2\u00a0 They had no control over hearing the same damn worthless crap over and over again.\u00c2\u00a0 Kind of like being at Starbucks yesterday.<\/p>\n
This might work for Paul, he might be the last one through the door, but if you’ve got a new act, don’t shove it down our throats, don’t take every marketing opportunity thrown your way.\u00c2\u00a0 Focus on the music and getting fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Fans beget fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Corporations don’t beget fans (unless, maybe, they’re Apple Computer!)<\/p>\n
This Hear Music\/Starbucks paradigm is now officially done.<\/p>\n
That Ray Charles CD sold at Starbucks, and then a few discs in reasonable numbers thereafter, but now the coffee chain is just another outlet, whose imprimatur is close to worthless.\u00c2\u00a0 If they sold ONE ALBUM A YEAR, and it wasn’t on their own label…\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, they’re selling COFFEE, not music.\u00c2\u00a0 And what sells their coffee is quality and word of mouth.\u00c2\u00a0 They’re not banging us over the head with ads telling us how fucking great their main product is.\u00c2\u00a0 The company is positively SOFT SELL!\u00c2\u00a0 Isn’t it curious when it comes to music they’re so fucking HARD SELL?\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, they don’t want to dilute their main brand (unless it be with water!)\u00c2\u00a0 To make it perfectly clear, Starbucks respects coffee more than music!\u00c2\u00a0 And doesn’t seemingly EVERYBODY these days.\u00c2\u00a0 This overhype and overselling of music has tainted the whole damn medium.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody thinks music is for wannabe rich hypesters looking to pull themselves above the rest of us.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, watch MTV, follow their antics.\u00c2\u00a0 Stars are two-dimensional cartoon characters we laugh at, we don’t BELIEVE IN THEM!<\/p>\n
Isn’t it funny that Trent Reznor won’t tie in with ANYBODY and won’t even go on TV, won’t do the late night shows, and he can sell out arenas fifteen odd years down the line and the "stars" of today work clubs?\u00c2\u00a0 Trent’s about servicing the fanbase.\u00c2\u00a0 Leaving those who don’t care OUT!<\/p>\n
Paul McCartney wants everybody.\u00c2\u00a0 And that’s why his carpet bomb hype turns us off.<\/p>\n
Oh, Paul will go on tour and sell out too.\u00c2\u00a0 But when he gets to the music from this new album, that’s when everybody will go to the bathroom.<\/p>\n
I figured he had more dignity.\u00c2\u00a0 But no, that was Lennon.<\/p>\n
I want a human Paul.\u00c2\u00a0 Not a slick vessel promoting a disc.<\/p>\n
But I’ll leave him alone now.\u00c2\u00a0 MAYBE!\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll leave you with your ancient memories as you coast into the retirement home.<\/p>\n
But what kind of crazy fucked up world do we live in where people are more partial to coffee than music, where music is a second-class citizen?<\/p>\n
It goes to the music itself, and how it is sold.<\/p>\n
Trying to reach as many people as possible, the labels signed bland crap, and overhyped it.<\/p>\n
When we finally had the chance to get out, WE DID!\u00c2\u00a0 We want more choice, we want something different from the wall to wall hip-hop and melisma-choking females.\u00c2\u00a0 We want something that touches our SOULS!\u00c2\u00a0 Fuck, touch someone’s soul and the music doesn’t even HAVE to be that good.\u00c2\u00a0 Have a beer with a fan, and he’ll be yours for LIFE!\u00c2\u00a0 Listen to your public.\u00c2\u00a0 Try to respect us.\u00c2\u00a0 THEN we’re interested.<\/p>\n
How about a house concert.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup Paul, come play somewhere in the suburbs, the STICKS!\u00c2\u00a0 Talk about Beatlemania, can you imagine the town it occurs in?\u00c2\u00a0 People will be lined up for blocks, looky-loos will jam up roads for miles around.\u00c2\u00a0 Because people want to touch a Beatle.\u00c2\u00a0 We all want to touch a Beatle.\u00c2\u00a0 But we want the Beatle of our memories.\u00c2\u00a0 Not some out of touch huckster.<\/p>\n
Start with the fucking basics.\u00c2\u00a0 The tunes and the public.\u00c2\u00a0 If you’ve got something real, press will be organic, and your record will sell.<\/p>\n
A hard core fan will stay with you for eons.<\/p>\n
Someone knocked over the head, caught up in temporary mania, he’ll be gone forever.<\/p>\n
The reason Paul can’t sell is because he’s burned us too many times.\u00c2\u00a0 If the new one really were the next "Band On The Run", it would be best to UNDERSELL IT!<\/p>\n
One drop in the water, that’s all it takes. Just like a single file in the P2P network might be traded by MILLIONS!<\/p>\n
But we only trade what we want.<\/p>\n
And we buy what we need.<\/p>\n
What do you want?\u00c2\u00a0 What do you need?\u00c2\u00a0 Something that comforts you at night, that you picked out, that’s yours, that feels like yours alone?\u00c2\u00a0 Or an impulse item bought in a momentary lapse of reason?<\/p>\n
