{"id":78,"date":"2005-07-06T04:19:55","date_gmt":"2005-07-06T11:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/07\/06\/londonphillytoronto\/"},"modified":"2005-07-06T04:26:35","modified_gmt":"2005-07-06T11:26:35","slug":"londonphillytoronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/07\/06\/londonphillytoronto\/","title":{"rendered":"London\/Philly\/Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s kind of like listening on your transistor.<\/p>\n<p>Our transistor radios were like the iPods of today.\u00c2\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have enough <br \/>money to buy them, our parents laid out the dough.\u00c2\u00a0 We kept them in leather <br \/>cases to prevent them from being damaged.\u00c2\u00a0 And, at night we put them on the <br \/>dresser by our bed, we put them under the pillow, and we listened.<\/p>\n<p>First it was baseball games.<\/p>\n<p>But then, after the Beatles, it was music.<\/p>\n<p>It was a private world.\u00c2\u00a0 Just you in your room.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, you could use the <br \/>earpiece, but you almost never did.\u00c2\u00a0 You held the little device up to your ear if <br \/>you needed to get closer to the sound.\u00c2\u00a0 But usually, it was quiet enough, it was <br \/>late at night, the sound emanating from the little box filled up your whole <br \/>room, and took you away.<\/p>\n<p>MTV was never a transistor.\u00c2\u00a0 TV is a cold medium.\u00c2\u00a0 Movies work because you&#8217;re in a dark room, you&#8217;re transported.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re not the same at home, it&#8217;s about not only the darkness but the alien environment.\u00c2\u00a0 Whereas music is completely different.\u00c2\u00a0 Music is about being in your head.\u00c2\u00a0 What&#8217;s going on around you is IRRELEVANT!<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, with MTV, music became a shared experience.\u00c2\u00a0 You couldn&#8217;t lose <br \/>control in front of the box, for there were others watching.\u00c2\u00a0 And, you rarely <br \/>stared anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 MTV was background.\u00c2\u00a0 What came out of the transistor was <br \/>foreground.\u00c2\u00a0 You might be doing your homework, but it was all that mattered.\u00c2\u00a0 Cousin Brucie doing the countdown.<\/p>\n<p>And just when it appears the experience is lost, the way music gets inside <br \/>your soul and takes you away, it&#8217;s BACK! They just put the London, Philly and Toronto Live 8 shows up on AOL.<\/p>\n<p>Go to: <a title=\"Live 8 London\" href=\"http:\/\/music.channel.aol.com\/live_8_concert\/highlights\/london\" target=\"_blank\">Live 8 London<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on your favorite band.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re all there.\u00c2\u00a0 From Pink Floyd to the Who <br \/>to the acts you don&#8217;t even care about.<\/p>\n<p>Or, at the top of the page, click on &quot;See shows city by city.&quot;\u00c2\u00a0 On the page <br \/>that comes up, featuring the performances from the three aforementioned <br \/>metropolises, click on the act you want to see.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re all right there at your <br \/>fingertips.\u00c2\u00a0 As of now, except for London, you&#8217;ve got to go to the act&#8217;s specific <br \/>page.\u00c2\u00a0 Where all their AOL Music stuff is.\u00c2\u00a0 But the Live 8 performances are <br \/>labeled, you can pick them out, you can play them.<\/p>\n<p>And they&#8217;re magical!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just you and the computer screen.\u00c2\u00a0 Hopefully you purchased good <br \/>speakers, if not, go to hifi.com, click on PC\/Multimedia and buy the MicroWorks II for $149.99, you&#8217;ll thank me.\u00c2\u00a0 ANYWAY, there&#8217;s this intimacy that rivets you.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>It&#8217;s really like the sixties all over again.<\/p>\n<p>Like right now I&#8217;m watching Bruce Cockburn doing &quot;Rocket Launcher&quot; from T.O. <br \/>If you&#8217;ve never seen him live, this is your chance to be inches away, and to<br \/>feel the power of just one man and his guitar, speaking from his soul.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I watched Bono and the boys do &quot;One&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Adams delivered on &quot;Open Road&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I know these performers were playing for the world, but watching them on your <br \/>computer screen, you think it&#8217;s only for you.<\/p>\n<p>The Internet is the best thing to happen for music since FM.<\/p>\n<p>Watch this stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 The music is ENOUGH!\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need big-breasted women,<br \/>dancing is irrelevant, it&#8217;s what we believed in ALL ALONG!\u00c2\u00a0 And it bypasses not only MTV, which punted, which missed the boat, by selling out to lifestyle <br \/>rather than tuneage, but terrestrial radio too.\u00c2\u00a0 Neither of them have this power.<\/p>\n<p>This is a breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>Live 8 is now Woodstock.\u00c2\u00a0 The political message is irrelevant.\u00c2\u00a0 Just like no <br \/>one foresaw Woodstock blowing music up, bringing tribes together not only via <br \/>the show, but the movie, no one realized that the ongoing airing of the Live 8 <br \/>performances on AOL would herald a new era.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like 1969 all over again.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>The youth knew.\u00c2\u00a0 They knew the power of the Net.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the parents that were <br \/>out of it, who had no clue, who thought that old media, the CD AND VIDEO, <br \/>still ruled!<\/p>\n<p>And the fact that there are no CDs, no videos, and no ongoing TV coverage <br \/>make the point even bigger.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to go to aolmusic.com to GET IT!<\/p>\n<p>The revolution has finally begun.<\/p>\n<p>Last week it was podcasting.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8230;Grokster is irrelevant.\u00c2\u00a0 The detritus of the nineties has been <br \/>wiped clean.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s no longer about how you look, how you market, how you dance, <br \/>but how you PLAY!\u00c2\u00a0 In one fell swoop AOL is reaching MILLIONS of fans, with no <br \/>interruptions, on demand.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally everybody has a rallying point.\u00c2\u00a0 They feel <br \/>like they belong.\u00c2\u00a0 The fact that old wave media is clueless, that there&#8217;s not <br \/>a big story on this on the front page of the paper tomorrow, is IRRELEVANT!\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>After the Woodstock movie kids knew it was about albums, not singles.\u00c2\u00a0 After <br \/>Live 8 music fans know it&#8217;s about the Web.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, singles still existed in <br \/>1970, people are still buying CDs, the old marketing ways have not died yet, but<br \/>they are en route to becoming MARGINALIZED! <\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s kind of like listening on your transistor.
