{"id":691,"date":"2007-02-17T19:30:21","date_gmt":"2007-02-18T03:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2007\/02\/17\/historylongevity\/"},"modified":"2007-02-17T19:30:21","modified_gmt":"2007-02-18T03:30:21","slug":"historylongevity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2007\/02\/17\/historylongevity\/","title":{"rendered":"History\/Longevity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Major Labels<\/p>\n<p>I really thought they were going to survive.\u00c2\u00a0 But they&#8217;ve fumbled the future again and again.\u00c2\u00a0 They sued their customers, they put FBI warnings on their products, what are they, a branch of the GOVERNMENT?<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re in business with your customers.\u00c2\u00a0 And the major labels have fucked their customers again and again.\u00c2\u00a0 To the point where trust cannot be rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, instead of producing a broad swath of material such that every demo and desire is covered, the majors are purveying lowest common denominator crap in the hope of lassoing a large chunk of ignorant consumers, who show no loyalty, who aren&#8217;t really even music fans.<\/p>\n<p>The list goes on and on.\u00c2\u00a0 Pricing, failure to develop a reasonable online strategy.\u00c2\u00a0 The mismanagement is staggering.\u00c2\u00a0 You wonder how the horse and buggy business died, just watch the major label paradigm for a repeat.<\/p>\n<p>More music for more people.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what technology allows.\u00c2\u00a0 But the majors want to sell less product to the same number of people.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s denying the future.<\/p>\n<p>The majors&#8217; strength is distribution.\u00c2\u00a0 They should play that card as opposed to laying out zillions of dollars to break faux artists.\u00c2\u00a0 Just charge at the toll, where the transaction is made, provide back office work for pennies for EVERYBODY!\u00c2\u00a0 And that which gets traction, cut a deal with the act to pump in marketing money for a GREATER piece of the action.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, publishing is a penny business and look at the value of THOSE entities!<\/p>\n<p><strong>LONGEVITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Copyrights<\/p>\n<p>Intellectual property is priceless.\u00c2\u00a0 Literally, not everybody can create it, and that which is good delivers revenue for as long as the law allows.<\/p>\n<p>It is the COPYRIGHT HOLDERS who are refusing to capitalize on new technologies.\u00c2\u00a0 People are stealing the wares because the owners WON&#8217;T SELL THEM TO THEM!<\/p>\n<p>It would be like Dell saying you had to buy a computer over the Net or phone and get shitty service from India.\u00c2\u00a0 As opposed to buying a Mac and being able to ask questions for FREE at a retail establishment.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, HP is kicking Dell&#8217;s butt because people want to buy in a store, they don&#8217;t want to wait.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you&#8217;ve got to follow the ever changing market.<\/p>\n<p>The movie companies are trying to combat demand.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, if someone wants to download a 90 minute movie, CHARGE THEM!\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t say their desire is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The gears are turning ever so slowly.\u00c2\u00a0 Theft is rampant.\u00c2\u00a0 But that doesn&#8217;t mean the rights are worthless, anything but.\u00c2\u00a0 They dropped the price of video and demand increased, i.e. the switch from VHS to DVD.\u00c2\u00a0 Lower the price even further and MORE people will want the wares.\u00c2\u00a0 As for music&#8230;music WROTE the paradigm.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota sells cars the people want.\u00c2\u00a0 Detroit manufactures cars without orders and then tries to convince the public to buy them.\u00c2\u00a0 SELL THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HISTORY The Major Labels I really thought they were going to survive.\u00c2\u00a0 But they&#8217;ve fumbled the future again and again.\u00c2\u00a0 They sued their customers, they put FBI warnings on their products, what are they, a branch of the GOVERNMENT?
