{"id":62,"date":"2005-06-23T21:11:42","date_gmt":"2005-06-24T04:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/06\/23\/you-oughta-know\/"},"modified":"2005-06-23T21:19:56","modified_gmt":"2005-06-24T04:19:56","slug":"you-oughta-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/06\/23\/you-oughta-know\/","title":{"rendered":"You Oughta Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you remember that Flea played the bass part on &quot;You Oughta Know&quot;?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I&#8217;m not the biggest Chili Peppers fan.\u00c2\u00a0 I find Anthony rarely sings <br \/>on key and their rock\/funk sound&#8230;well, it&#8217;s not exactly my thing.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve <br \/>seen them a couple of times, and when Flea stands there in his diaper, <br \/>pulling the notes from his bass, you get the feeling that they&#8217;re one, that the <br \/>instrument and he have MERGED!\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, he&#8217;s got his own unique style, where he&#8217;s kind of dancing around the melody, with his own peculiar rhythm.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s <br \/>unmistakable.\u00c2\u00a0 And you hear it in &quot;You Oughta Know&quot;, it adds an element of DANGER!<\/p>\n<p><em>I want you to know, that I&#8217;m happy for you<br \/>I wish nothing but the best for you both<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s great about these introductory lines is Alanis doesn&#8217;t feel this way <br \/>AT ALL!!\u00c2\u00a0 In an era wherein closure became the cultural norm, wherein you were <br \/>supposed to be FRIENDS with your ex, Alanis went on to VENT!\u00c2\u00a0 All the anger <br \/>she felt about not only being dumped, but REPLACED!<\/p>\n<p>I was hiking deep in the mountains last night listening on my iPod to a smart <br \/>playlist of my 200 most played songs in my iTunes library when I heard the <br \/>orchestral version of &quot;You Oughta Know&quot; from the Grammys.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d just descended <br \/>from the peak, the entire Los Angeles basin was laid out beneath me, and it was <br \/>as if I was getting a phone call from a friend.\u00c2\u00a0 One thing I hate about adults <br \/>is they obfuscate, they&#8217;re worried about their image.\u00c2\u00a0 But when &quot;Jagged <br \/>Little Pill&quot; was released, Alanis was only 21, the world was still new to her, she <br \/>sang what she felt.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s better than any book, you don&#8217;t have to imagine <br \/>anything, rather it&#8217;s about hearing the story and THEN being in a mood.\u00c2\u00a0 I was <br \/>stunned.\u00c2\u00a0 I had to play it AGAIN!<\/p>\n<p>For sixteen weeks straight, movie grosses have been substandard, off from <br \/>last year.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, now they&#8217;re saying it&#8217;s unfair, last year &quot;The Last Temptation Of <br \/>Christ&quot; skewed the numbers!\u00c2\u00a0 The film business is looking for an EXPLANATION! <br \/>\u00c2\u00a0One that will paper over the truth.\u00c2\u00a0 Which is the movies suck and the people <br \/>know it.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the story.\u00c2\u00a0 The MPAA isn&#8217;t saying that downloading is killing their <br \/>grosses, but make no mistake, the Web, NEW TECHNOLOGY, is hurting their <br \/>business.\u00c2\u00a0 From the days of P.T. Barnum, the key to show business was WHAT&#8217;S BEHIND THE CURTAIN!\u00c2\u00a0 Pay your money TO SEE WHAT&#8217;S BEHIND THE CURTAIN.<\/p>\n<p>But now everybody knows what&#8217;s behind the curtain.\u00c2\u00a0 Kids in theatres text <br \/>friends to state a movie sucks.\u00c2\u00a0 Websites say films suck before they even HIT the <br \/>theatre.\u00c2\u00a0 Used to be you had to wait til MONDAY to know if you had a hit.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Now you know FRIDAY NIGHT!\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not only the BUSINESS that knows, it&#8217;s the <br \/>public too.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, people can spread the word on GOOD STUFF, it&#8217;s just that there&#8217;s <br \/>none of it.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean does your dick get hard for &quot;Bewitched&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 Elizabeth <br \/>Montgomery radiated this suburban sexuality Nicole Kidman can only DREAM of.\u00c2\u00a0 But <br \/>we&#8217;re not going to see this film, those of us who remember the original series, <br \/>it would be SACRILEGIOUS!\u00c2\u00a0 And, we&#8217;ve lived through trash remakes of &quot;The <br \/>Flintstones&quot; and &quot;The Beverly Hillbillies&quot;, we KNOW the film can&#8217;t be any good.\u00c2\u00a0 As <br \/>for kids&#8230;they don&#8217;t remember the original and unless word spreads it&#8217;s <br \/>FANTASTIC, they&#8217;ll stay away.<\/p>\n<p>You see, &quot;Bewitched&quot;, which has actually gotten some good reviews, is a <br \/>marketing exercise.\u00c2\u00a0 It starts with the title\/concept.\u00c2\u00a0 Then you insure it with <br \/>star power.\u00c2\u00a0 And, it&#8217;s a worldwide business, so you believe these recognition <br \/>factors will play overseas, and you&#8217;ll make money.\u00c2\u00a0 Only this paradigm no longer <br \/>works, the public is burned out, movies don&#8217;t even REPRESENT what they used <br \/>to.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re lame thrill rides at best, they&#8217;ve got no SOUL!\u00c2\u00a0 But studios don&#8217;t <br \/>want to make soulful pictures, because inherently the audience will be <br \/>LIMITED!\u00c2\u00a0 They won&#8217;t play overseas.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ll appeal to kids not adults, or vice <br \/>versa.\u00c2\u00a0 Why LIMIT YOURSELF!<\/p>\n<p>The same philosophy has been employed in the music business.\u00c2\u00a0 By playing to <br \/>the grandstand, the cheap seats, the people down front, paying attention, are <br \/>now disgusted, they&#8217;ve left the building, and no number of LAWSUITS is going to <br \/>bring them BACK!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the major labels are PUNISHING the audience for not liking what they&#8217;re <br \/>selling.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only are they suing them, but copy-protecting discs, as if the <br \/>problem is that people want to pirate the music as opposed to NOT WANTING THE <br \/>MUSIC AT ALL!\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, MAYBE for free, but the tracks aren&#8217;t even worth a buck&#8230;as <br \/>for the entire album, are you KIDDING!<\/p>\n<p>This week Starbucks sold in excess of 61,000 acoustic remakes of &quot;Jagged <br \/>Little Pill&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Think about that, it&#8217;s RIDICULOUS!\u00c2\u00a0 This material has been recut <br \/>MORE than once.\u00c2\u00a0 There are acoustic versions of all these songs available.\u00c2\u00a0 The <br \/>album is not even for sale in traditional retail outlets.\u00c2\u00a0 Why are people <br \/>BUYING IT?<\/p>\n<p>Because they remember &quot;Jagged Little Pill&quot; as the last hurrah, the last time <br \/>they heard something different, INFECTIOUS, on the radio, so HOT that they had <br \/>to rush out and buy the album, which they found out was every bit as good as <br \/>the single.\u00c2\u00a0 They studied the credits, back when they used to follow the <br \/>careers of musicians, they were INTO IT!<\/p>\n<p>Think about it.\u00c2\u00a0 What have we gotten since &quot;Jagged Little Pill&quot;?<\/p>\n<p>The boy bands.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to give them too much shit.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of those songs <br \/>were FANTASTIC!\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather listen to &quot;Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)&quot; <br \/>and &quot;I Want It That Way&quot; than ANY System Of A Down or Fifty Cent track.\u00c2\u00a0 They <br \/>just SOUNDED good, they were EAR-PLEASING, but ultimately meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>The Backstreet Boys were the Four Seasons.\u00c2\u00a0 But, after &quot;Big Girls Don&#8217;t Cry&quot; <br \/>came &quot;I Want To Hold Your Hand&quot; and &quot;Satisfaction&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 We GREW UP!\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s been <br \/>no growth in the music business, rather it&#8217;s become a lowest common <br \/>denominator enterprise where Ashlee Simpson is flogged and the fact that people <br \/>lip-sync in concert and don&#8217;t play an instrument is met with a shrug, as de rigueur, <br \/>as irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s the MUSIC that&#8217;s irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p><em>And I&#8217;m here to remind you<br \/>Of the mess you left when you went away<br \/>It&#8217;s not fair to deny me<br \/>Of the cross I bear that you gave to me<br \/>You, you, you oughta know<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The music business is an old girlfriend who not only dumped us, but we don&#8217;t <br \/>even recognize anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like Mia Farrow in &quot;Crimes and Misdemeanors&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>After revealing her truth to Woody Allen, after the two bond, reveling in their <br \/>skewed view of the world, she leaves him for the dashing but vapid Alan Alda. <br \/>\u00c2\u00a0Woody&#8217;s disgusted.\u00c2\u00a0 How could she do this to him?\u00c2\u00a0 He can never forgive her.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, she&#8217;s not coming BACK!<\/p>\n<p>The major labels have abandoned those of us who truly kept them alive.\u00c2\u00a0 The <br \/>fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Who bought not one or two albums a year, but at least that number PER <br \/>WEEK, who went to all the shows, who spread the word.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re on strike.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re <br \/>buying almost nothing.\u00c2\u00a0 And the younger generation, since they&#8217;ve only KNOWN <br \/>this lowest common denominator industry, is searching for music elsewhere, on <br \/>MySpace, trading files of bands you&#8217;ve never HEARD OF!<\/p>\n<p>The major labels have ruined THEIR OWN business.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, they&#8217;ll never admit this.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s too late.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ve alienated their core, there&#8217;s no trust left.\u00c2\u00a0 In <br \/>an era where information is freely available, their games have been revealed.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>That they&#8217;re not interested in art, in soul-fulfillment, but only MONEY!\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>They&#8217;re constantly swinging for the fences, but without a spray hitter, a <br \/>baseball team can&#8217;t WIN!<\/p>\n<p>But you don&#8217;t have to be George Steinbrenner to have a record company today.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Everybody&#8217;s got the means of production, a computer, and the means of <br \/>distribution, the Web.<\/p>\n<p>The ship is unmoored.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s never coming back to the dock.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s left for <br \/>greener pastures.\u00c2\u00a0 Where those are, we&#8217;re just not exactly sure yet. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you remember that Flea played the bass part on &quot;You Oughta Know&quot;?
