{"id":609,"date":"2006-11-29T08:48:43","date_gmt":"2006-11-29T16:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/11\/29\/this-is-hilarious\/"},"modified":"2006-11-29T08:54:36","modified_gmt":"2006-11-29T16:54:36","slug":"this-is-hilarious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/11\/29\/this-is-hilarious\/","title":{"rendered":"This Is Hilarious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t believe in self-hype.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know, you can&#8217;t get anywhere without TELLING people about yourself.\u00c2\u00a0 But every time I think of promoting myself I think of the words from &quot;The Disco Strangler&quot;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sayin, &#8216;Look at me, baby, look at me. <br \/>I&#8217;m beautiful, I&#8217;m beautiful, I&#8217;m somebody.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, maybe you need more context&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles&#8217; &quot;Long Run&quot; album was a disappointment.\u00c2\u00a0 Not so much in that it was bad, but it had to follow &quot;Hotel California&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing could follow &quot;Hotel California&quot;, which is why the group ultimately broke up.\u00c2\u00a0 Trying to top it, trying to get something done that was SO great, the band couldn&#8217;t produce anything at all.\u00c2\u00a0 So Glenn Frey immediately cut &quot;No Fun Aloud&quot;, the OPPOSITE of an Eagles album, all irreverent and nonchalant, and Don Henley released the dud &quot;I Can&#8217;t Stand Still&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But then Frey slid off into oblivion, with ever less impressive discs, and Henley waited years and released &quot;Building The Perfect Beast&quot; and became an icon.\u00c2\u00a0 And then everybody listening to the Eagles got so old and never went into a record store and NEITHER Frey nor Henley could sell for shit so the band got back together.<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY, &quot;The Long Run&quot; is my least favorite Eagles disc.\u00c2\u00a0 It contains the overrated Timothy B. Schmit track &quot;I Can&#8217;t Tell You Why&quot;, easily eclipsed by Poco&#8217;s &quot;Keep On Tryin&#8217;&quot;, and the almost irrelevant &quot;Geeks Don&#8217;t Want No Freaks&quot;, but it DOES contain the ever popular and better now than it was back then &quot;Heartache Tonight&quot;, the title track, &quot;Those Shoes&quot;, Joe Walsh&#8217;s &quot;Warriors&quot; track &quot;In The City&quot; and &quot;King Of Hollywood&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, it&#8217;s a great collection of just a bit subpar, for the Eagles, cuts.\u00c2\u00a0 And sandwiched next to last on the first side, in the place of the classic &quot;Life In The Fast Lane&quot; on &quot;Hotel California&quot;, is &quot;The Disco Strangler&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Now AFTER &quot;The Disco Strangler&quot; comes &quot;King Of Hollywood&quot;, all dark and film noir.\u00c2\u00a0 The two make quite a pair.\u00c2\u00a0 The latter song has memorable lyrics too.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, there&#8217;s the great slow intro into the opening &quot;Well he sits up there on his leatherette&quot;, but it&#8217;s the closing verse that puts the song over the top, that is so memorable&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>After a while, nothing was pretty<br \/>After a while, everything got lost<br \/>Still, his jacuzzi runneth over<br \/>Still, he just couldn&#8217;t get off<br \/>He&#8217;s just another power junkie<br \/>Just another silk-scarf monkey<br \/>You&#8217;d know it if you saw his stuff<br \/>The man just isn&#8217;t big enough<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then the guitars start to WAIL!<\/p>\n<p>THIS is Hollywood.\u00c2\u00a0 If you want an example, read this: <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p><a title=\"When Pitching an Idea, Leave Yoda Out of It\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/features\/printedition\/magazine\/la-tm-rules48nov26,1,5093818.story?ctrack=1&#038;cset=true\" target=\"_blank\">When Pitching an Idea, Leave Yoda Out of It<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And so is &quot;The Disco Strangler&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 You can see the wannabe.\u00c2\u00a0 You can get high on cocaine just LISTENING to it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lookin&#8217; for the good life <br \/>Dressed to kill <br \/>She don&#8217;t have to worry &#8217;cause <br \/>There&#8217;s always someone else who will <br \/>Loose and loaded every night <br \/>Dancin&#8217; underneath the flashin&#8217; light <br \/>Sayin, &#8216;Look at me, baby, look at me. <br \/>I&#8217;m beautiful, I&#8217;m beautiful, I&#8217;m somebody.&#8217; <br \/>Just slip into the arms of the disco strangler<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And now that we&#8217;ve got THAT out of the way&#8230;, let&#8217;s just say that in the modern era, it&#8217;s about pull rather than push.\u00c2\u00a0 If something&#8217;s good, people will find it.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what the Net&#8217;s about!\u00c2\u00a0 Everything&#8217;s AVAILABLE!\u00c2\u00a0 The labels haven&#8217;t figured this out.\u00c2\u00a0 They think the old days\/ways still rule.\u00c2\u00a0 So they overhype and burn acts out.<\/p>\n<p>As for me..?\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, I don&#8217;t feel GOOD ENOUGH, WORTHY ENOUGH, to say LOOK AT ME!\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, YOU JUST MIGHT!\u00c2\u00a0 Then I&#8217;ll be forced to try and meet your expectations, and I probably won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY, I got e-mail from this guy, whom I don&#8217;t know, and it said this:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>Hi Bob,<\/p>\n<p>Fred Wilson my partner in wallstrip, introduced me to your blog.
