{"id":53,"date":"2005-06-19T19:27:20","date_gmt":"2005-06-20T02:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/06\/19\/sunny-day-1\/"},"modified":"2005-06-19T19:27:20","modified_gmt":"2005-06-20T02:27:20","slug":"sunny-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/06\/19\/sunny-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunny Day-1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you know there&#8217;s a war in Iraq?\u00c2\u00a0 And that seemingly every day insurgent suicide bombers kill civilians?\u00c2\u00a0 Might seem obvious to you, but I&#8217;m not sure the average American is in touch with this fact.\u00c2\u00a0 You see, his news outlets just don&#8217;t TELL HIM!<\/p>\n<p>My Safari homepage is the Yahoo News.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s where I&#8217;m confronted with the latest bombing statistics, at the top of the page, every time I load my browser.\u00c2\u00a0 But, the death toll never makes it to my AOL homepage.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s stuff on golf, on Father&#8217;s Day, on some celebrity, but WAR??\u00c2\u00a0 God, you can get KILLED in war!<\/p>\n<p>And death and destruction don&#8217;t make it to the Google News homepage either.\u00c2\u00a0 You see, unlike Yahoo, there&#8217;s nobody home at the Google News.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s compiled by computer.\u00c2\u00a0 And, it appears that not enough of the news outlets Google canvasses think the war in Iraq is an important enough story.<\/p>\n<p>Now, you record companies fiddling with the CD should take note.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re living in a terrestrial world, and that&#8217;s why you&#8217;re fucked, you don&#8217;t UNDERSTAND the power of the homepage.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not why I&#8217;m beating you up here.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m beating you up because you live by the mantra of giving people what they want.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure when things flipped.\u00c2\u00a0 When art became about money instead of expression.\u00c2\u00a0 When instant sales were seen to triumph over long term sales.\u00c2\u00a0 Some say it was &quot;Jaws&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Others say it was Michael Milken and the other 80s investment bankers.\u00c2\u00a0 But, the question arises, is this perspective, is this ideal, is it TRUE?<\/p>\n<p>The record companies&#8217; business has been declining for half a decade.\u00c2\u00a0 Is this about piracy, or is this about a failed business model?\u00c2\u00a0 Could it be that if the labels focused on signing and promoting artists of value, who were in it for the long haul, their business would INCREASE??<\/p>\n<p>Talk to the man on the street.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ll hear it again and again.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio sucks.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio used to be the MOST adventurous medium, that&#8217;s why it continued to prosper after the advent of television.\u00c2\u00a0 But now listenership is down and revenues are too, never mind VALUATIONS!\u00c2\u00a0 Could it be that a new model must be employed?\u00c2\u00a0 That instead of playing fewer records, they should play MORE?\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what the Jack format is about.\u00c2\u00a0 However, Jack leaves aside one of the selling elements of radio, personality.\u00c2\u00a0 But much worse, Jack only plays greatest hits&#8230;where are the NEW greatest hits coming from?\u00c2\u00a0 Believe me, underground FM radio didn&#8217;t get gangbuster ratings when it began in 1967.\u00c2\u00a0 It was only when word spread that the format was cool, and it established a LIBRARY of great artists that the medium flourished.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless radio invests in itself, it&#8217;s going to die.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless the labels invest in themselves, THEY&#8217;RE going to die.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you know there&#8217;s a war in Iraq?\u00c2\u00a0 And that seemingly every day insurgent suicide bombers kill civilians?\u00c2\u00a0 Might seem obvious to you, but I&#8217;m not sure the average American is in touch with this fact.\u00c2\u00a0 You see, his news outlets just don&#8217;t TELL HIM!
