{"id":498,"date":"2006-08-17T20:07:35","date_gmt":"2006-08-18T04:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/08\/17\/the-wreckers\/"},"modified":"2006-08-17T20:13:01","modified_gmt":"2006-08-18T04:13:01","slug":"the-wreckers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/08\/17\/the-wreckers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Wreckers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I used to buy Chris Hillman records.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I knew he was in the Byrds.\u00c2\u00a0 But it was really because I loved that first Souther, Hillman, Furay record.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I know, the band hated each other, J.D. gave Richie no respect, but there were certain tracks on that album&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, remember &quot;Life ain&#8217;t so easy in this border town, too much dope and too much running around?&quot;\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, that was BEFORE &quot;Life In The Fast Lane&quot;!<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say I bought J.D.&#8217;s &quot;Black Rose&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 One of my favorite singer-songwriter albums ever.\u00c2\u00a0 (&quot;The moon was yellow and the sky was blue, the night can make a promise of love or it can make you a fool&quot;!\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, it&#8217;s YOUR TURN NOW!)\u00c2\u00a0 And two Chris Hillman solo albums.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, I also knew him from Manassas.\u00c2\u00a0 Have you listened to that double album recently, FANTASTIC!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to tell you that Chris&#8217; albums were fantastic, rare gems you should immediately pick up.\u00c2\u00a0 But that would be untrue.\u00c2\u00a0 They were just good, LISTENABLE!\u00c2\u00a0 And since I paid for them, that&#8217;s what I did, LISTEN!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I was so much older then, I&#8217;m younger than that now.\u00c2\u00a0 I had the answers back then.\u00c2\u00a0 Today it&#8217;s a brand new world.\u00c2\u00a0 So confusing that oftentimes I find myself on the sidelines, or if playing, feeling clueless as to where the stream IS!<\/p>\n<p>It was easier in the seventies.\u00c2\u00a0 There were so many fewer records.\u00c2\u00a0 And you could get a grip on the scene.\u00c2\u00a0 Today, it&#8217;s as if the NFL had 4327 teams and the American League sported a franchise even in Montana and a great number of the people said street luge is really where it&#8217;s at, and ESPN49 shows a block every Friday night and you&#8217;ve got to check it out.<\/p>\n<p>I check out what people send me.\u00c2\u00a0 And the new albums of people I like.\u00c2\u00a0 And after that, I rely on satellite radio.\u00c2\u00a0 Do I miss shit?\u00c2\u00a0 ALL THE TIME!<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s frustrating.\u00c2\u00a0 Because when I want to appear hip, when I try to get a handle on things and I listen to the stuff the hipsters tell me is cool&#8230;it just doesn&#8217;t appeal to me.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, maybe I understand it.\u00c2\u00a0 Can even get into an aspect of it.\u00c2\u00a0 But when it comes to saving the track in my iTunes library or deleting it, I delete it.<\/p>\n<p>I truly thought it was me.\u00c2\u00a0 And then today I heard &quot;The Wreckers&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Lynn:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>In regards to the Wreckers sales, maybe the leggy blonde holding the guitar next to Michelle Branch helped sales. sure didn&#8217;t hurt&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The above e-mail led me to the Wreckers&#8217; site.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t figure this had been part of the act&#8217;s appeal.\u00c2\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t even seen a picture of the sidekick.<\/p>\n<p>The Wreckers site featured the dreaded Flash.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve got the Flash you immediately demonstrate you don&#8217;t get it.\u00c2\u00a0 You insure I&#8217;m NEVER coming back to your site.\u00c2\u00a0 Because I don&#8217;t have time to sit through the same bullshit animations to garner new information.\u00c2\u00a0 Really, you can wait the better part of a minute to get to substance on these sites.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a circle jerk going on here.\u00c2\u00a0 Web-designers want to get paid.\u00c2\u00a0 Label execs want to justify their jobs.\u00c2\u00a0 Acts are out of the loop.\u00c2\u00a0 Websites are not the new album package, at best they&#8217;re LINER NOTES!\u00c2\u00a0 They should be utilitarian.\u00c2\u00a0 Lightning fast.\u00c2\u00a0 Instantly clickable to find what you want.\u00c2\u00a0 There should be NO splash opening screen.<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY, after clicking to enter the Wreckers site, I heard a riff that was almost certainly James Taylor&#8217;s &quot;Country Road&quot;, but then it changed just enough and the singer&#8217;s voice was sweet and palatable yet had a certain ATTITUDE!\u00c2\u00a0 And then, not long into the track, there was a chorus.<\/p>\n<p>Shit, THIS is music.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I&#8217;m not gonna judge your beats-related track.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just that Justin Timberlake&#8217;s &quot;Sexy Back&quot; I understand, I can see dancing\/fucking to, but it doesn&#8217;t set my mind free, I can&#8217;t see driving cross-country to it.\u00c2\u00a0 (You can hear it at: <a title=\"Justin Timberlake\" href=\"http:\/\/www.justintimberlake.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Timberlake<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;m saying here is the music APPEALED TO ME!\u00c2\u00a0 It SOUNDED good.\u00c2\u00a0 I LIKED IT!<\/p>\n<p>It was like finding my old glove and pumping a baseball into the pocket.\u00c2\u00a0 No, it was like going to Sport Chalet and finding a NEW glove with the feel of the old one.<\/p>\n<p>They say it&#8217;s about songs.\u00c2\u00a0 I think of a lot of today&#8217;s hit music isn&#8217;t songs, but tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t sing along.\u00c2\u00a0 They don&#8217;t provide the old visceral experience.\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, you should be able to sing the song with your buddies at the lake, if it&#8217;s REALLY good.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to tell you the songs got worse.\u00c2\u00a0 But they didn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 One after another of the songs streaming on the Wreckers&#8217; site appealed to me.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to take it.\u00c2\u00a0 I fired up my P2P program.\u00c2\u00a0 But in order to know what titles to download, I fired up Amazon, to get the track listing.\u00c2\u00a0 And since I was there, I read the reviews.<\/p>\n<p>What caught me off guard was the excitement, the ENTHUSIASM!\u00c2\u00a0 Not all music slides off people, doesn&#8217;t get them in their gut.\u00c2\u00a0 Except for the couple bringing &quot;Stand Still, Look Pretty&quot;&#8217;s rating down to the four and a half star level, the reviewers were testifying.<\/p>\n<p>I really liked Michelle Branch&#8217;s debut.\u00c2\u00a0 It was raw, and it was honest.\u00c2\u00a0 But the follow-up was slick and overproduced.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even bother to call for a Wreckers CD.\u00c2\u00a0 Country isn&#8217;t my thing.\u00c2\u00a0 And she lost me with that second record.\u00c2\u00a0 But Raymond Lynn&#8217;s e-mail got me to listen.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve been listening ever since.\u00c2\u00a0 Playing the album again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t tell me they suck.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t tell me they&#8217;re not revolutionary.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t tell me you think Michelle Branch&#8217;s voice can be too girlish.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t even bother to criticize.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s not the point.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, I can BELIEVE, it&#8217;s not like song doctors came in and rewrote the tracks, it&#8217;s not like Michelle and Jessica are just pretty faces.\u00c2\u00a0 The music FEELS GOOD!<\/p>\n<p>Have you read &quot;Blink&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not &quot;The Tipping Point&quot;, but it makes the point that experts can tell instantly.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m an expert.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t listen to music with my mind.\u00c2\u00a0 Most times I can tell instantly whether something is good, certainly whether I like it.\u00c2\u00a0 Occasionally do I learn to love something over time?\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, but almost never if I wasn&#8217;t interested a bit first.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Stand Still, Look Pretty&quot; rekindles my faith.\u00c2\u00a0 In music, in my radar.\u00c2\u00a0 It sets my mind adrift on this waning summer day.\u00c2\u00a0 Thinking of going back to school, hitting the record store in preparation.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason this record has sold in excess of 200,000 copies.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s GOOD!<\/p>\n<p>Better than those Chris Hillman solo records, in fact.\u00c2\u00a0 But when Mike Marrone played &quot;Slippin&#8217; Away&quot; on XM&#8217;s Loft I was brought right back to law school, and my one room apartment on Carmelina.<\/p>\n<p>Years from now, when I hear &quot;Way Back Home&quot; or another Wreckers track on whatever broadcasting device exists, I&#8217;ll smile and think of this day of discovery.<\/p>\n<p>And, someone WILL play this music again.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not made to sell today and get out tomorrow.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s artistry involved.\u00c2\u00a0 And in an era when Paris Hilton makes records, that&#8217;s not something that should go by unnoticed.<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p><a title=\"The Wreckers\" href=\"http:\/\/thewreckers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Wreckers<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to buy Chris Hillman records.
