{"id":44,"date":"2005-06-08T17:10:16","date_gmt":"2005-06-09T00:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/06\/08\/the-npd-report\/"},"modified":"2005-06-08T18:39:41","modified_gmt":"2005-06-09T01:39:41","slug":"the-npd-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/06\/08\/the-npd-report\/","title":{"rendered":"The NPD Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p><a title=\"Reuters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/newsArticle.jhtml?type=musicNews&#038;storyID=8721765\" target=\"_blank\">Legal online music stores gain on illegal services<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is fucking crazy.\u00c2\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t anybody at Reuters have any power of <br \/>ANALYSIS??<\/p>\n<p>In case you missed it, the NPD Group, whoever the hell THAT is, now states <br \/>that the iTunes Music Store is the second most popular online music source.\u00c2\u00a0 The <br \/>report states that 1.7 million U.S. households downloaded at least one song <br \/>in March.\u00c2\u00a0 NPD says this ties it with Limewire, and puts it right behind WinMX, <br \/>which had 2.1 million households using it.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see.\u00c2\u00a0 Assuming these statistics are true&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t this like saying if <br \/>the same number of people visit a 7-11 as a supermarket, sales are equal, 7-11 <br \/>is TAKING OVER THE WORLD??<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with 7-11, and if you live in the U.S. you must be, you <br \/>know the outlets stock limited inventory at EXORBITANT prices.\u00c2\u00a0 You only go <br \/>there when you&#8217;re desperate, for convenience.\u00c2\u00a0 Willing to overpay for one item, <br \/>knowing you won&#8217;t have to wait in a long line to check out.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, they don&#8217;t <br \/>even have SHOPPING CARTS at 7-11, that&#8217;s how little they expect you to buy.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Hell, they don&#8217;t even have those HANDHELD BASKETS!<\/p>\n<p>People go to supermarkets to buy MULTIPLE ITEMS, to STOCK UP!\u00c2\u00a0 They don&#8217;t log <br \/>on to Limewire to download a track or two, they take dozens, hundreds, <br \/>sometimes THOUSANDS!!!\u00c2\u00a0 How many people log on to the iTMS and download dozens, hundreds, even THOUSANDS of tracks?\u00c2\u00a0 HUH??\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d bet almost NO ONE!!\u00c2\u00a0 Because not only do you have to pay, it&#8217;s a bad deal.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re paying the aliquot price of the CD for a track, and getting shitty sound, copy protection and no artwork.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>This is the savior of the business?\u00c2\u00a0 Are you KIDDING ME??<\/p>\n<p>And what about the FREE downloads on the iTMS.\u00c2\u00a0 How many of those 1.7 million <br \/>visitors just took the FREE track?\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, I&#8217;ve NEVER purchased anything at <br \/>the iTMS, but I&#8217;ve downloaded a free Kathleen Edwards track.<\/p>\n<p>This NPD report is the kind of irresponsible research that is flogged by the <br \/>RIAA and trumpeted in the media resulting in the public being given a <br \/>completely incorrect view of reality.\u00c2\u00a0 Kind of like the President stating that CIA <br \/>research told him that Iraq had nukes.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, the &quot;New York Times&quot; blindly repeated <br \/>this, only checking itself AFTER we invaded Iraq and U.S. soldiers, never <br \/>mind many more Iraqis, died.<\/p>\n<p>Face facts.\u00c2\u00a0 P2P downloading DWARFS legal downloading.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, P2P is aided by <br \/>being FREE, but to only focus on that factor is to miss the issue.\u00c2\u00a0 P2P is a <br \/>different paradigm of music acquisition.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s about downloading MASS <br \/>QUANTITIES of music, for which the RIAA and publishers should extract a low price, one spread out over millions of now non-music buying citizens, such that these <br \/>entities make MORE money than they do now.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get people to buy ONE track, <br \/>get them to buy TONS, charging them FAR MORE than ONE costs, making them think <br \/>they&#8217;re getting a deal.\u00c2\u00a0 Which, THEY ARE!\u00c2\u00a0 But, EVERYBODY IS BENEFITING, the <br \/>companies, the creators and the public.<\/p>\n<p>The iTMS is a zit on the ass of online music.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think it should be <br \/>eviscerated, but to see it as the savior of the business is to be so myopic and <br \/>ignorant as to make ANYBODY tech-savvy laugh hysterically.<\/p>\n<p>As for Rhapsody, Yahoo! Unlimited and Napster&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t fight human <br \/>nature.\u00c2\u00a0 TODAY people want to own.\u00c2\u00a0 They might want to rent in the future, then <br \/>again, the sale of DVDs as opposed to the rental of VHS tapes doesn&#8217;t portend <br \/>that this will be the case.\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, why did DVD blow up?\u00c2\u00a0 Why does DVD now <br \/>eclipse THEATRICAL revenues?\u00c2\u00a0 BECAUSE THEY&#8217;RE CHEAP!!!!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legal online music stores gain on illegal services This is fucking crazy.\u00c2\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t anybody at Reuters have any power of ANALYSIS??
