Only 3,279 people have watched Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris on YouTube.\u00c2\u00a0 And that’s CRIMINAL!\u00c2\u00a0 You’ll be mesmerized by Knopfler’s licks, but just shy of three minutes in, when Emmylou starts kicking her legs backward in time to the music, you’ll exclaim VOILA, she’s fucking KIKI DEE!<\/p>\n

I’ve got the music in me.\u00c2\u00a0 And you do too.\u00c2\u00a0 But resonance is infrequent.\u00c2\u00a0 Because oftentimes the music is trapped.\u00c2\u00a0 Under a cloak of marketing.\u00c2\u00a0 Sold to us by soulless men believing in a lowest common denominator.\u00c2\u00a0 So we’re not used to it, we’re not prepared when we feel it, for it’s been SUCH A LONG FUCKING TIME!<\/p>\n

Funny how you’ve got to steal the product to have any progress in this world.\u00c2\u00a0 I don’t see record labels scurrying around trying to get all their assets up on the Web.\u00c2\u00a0 God, they’ve fired the people who do the legwork.\u00c2\u00a0 And don’t you know there are RIGHTS ISSUES!\u00c2\u00a0 The act doesn’t look and\/or sound the way it should, they’ve got an asshole manager, and their LAWYER!\u00c2\u00a0 WHEW!\u00c2\u00a0 Our hands are TIED!<\/p>\n

But the public is free.\u00c2\u00a0 To digitize everything and distribute it at will.\u00c2\u00a0 You see there just aren’t enough COPS to handcuff everyone.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s hysterical to see the old fart execs, like Lorne Michaels in Robert Smigel’s "TV Funhouse", saying COME BACK HERE WITH MY SHOW!<\/p>\n

And isn’t it just like SNL.\u00c2\u00a0 Whose "Lazy Sunday" distribution on YouTube gave newfound cred to a show that was passe before the eighties hit.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don’t free the copyrighted material, you will make no MONEY!<\/p>\n

Let people do what they will with your assets.\u00c2\u00a0 THEN charge them for this usage.\u00c2\u00a0 Don’t tell them they can’t do this or that, which they can do with virtual impunity anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 Just find a way to monetize what’s ALREADY HAPPENING!<\/p>\n

Have you searched YouTube?<\/p>\n

Try it.\u00c2\u00a0 Go to http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/<\/a> and plug in the name of your favorite act.\u00c2\u00a0 You’ll be STUNNED what comes up.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s a fan’s DREAM!\u00c2\u00a0 But, of course, record labels aren’t interested in fans.<\/p>\n

That’s what a fan wants, EVERYTHING!\u00c2\u00a0 The more he sees, the more he likes and ultimately believes in the act.\u00c2\u00a0 And when he’s hooked, he’ll give you ALL HIS MONEY!<\/p>\n

Why the fuck should I watch David Letterman.\u00c2\u00a0 Never mind Jay or Conan.\u00c2\u00a0 Why should I bother to record the performances on these lame shows when I can find them INSTANTLY, on YouTube.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, they’re there, just search for them.<\/p>\n

They’re not on Dave’s site.\u00c2\u00a0 They’re not on the record company site.\u00c2\u00a0 But the FANS have captured them and placed them on YouTube.\u00c2\u00a0 Doing the label’s work FOR THEM!<\/p>\n

Shit, you should be able to watch EVERY act on Letterman RIGHT AFTER IT’S AIRED!\u00c2\u00a0 As many times as you would like.\u00c2\u00a0 Almost none of the target audience is viewing when they’re shown.\u00c2\u00a0 You’re spending all that money on travel, never mind makeup and hair and backup musicians.\u00c2\u00a0 Why not get something for your buck.\u00c2\u00a0 Why doesn’t EMI announce EVERY TV APPEARANCE OF THEIR ACTS WILL NOW BE INSTANTLY AVAILABLE!\u00c2\u00a0 SOMEWHERE!\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, it’s just about the announcement, since, as stated earlier, so much stuff is ALREADY posted.<\/p>\n

And this story gets the Johnny-Come-Latelies to go to YouTube, the same way they went to Napster when the P2P service was on the cover of "Newsweek", and become enraptured.<\/p>\n

Did you read that article on the front page of the "New York Times Magazine"?\u00c2\u00a0 Digitization is HAPPENING!\u00c2\u00a0 To fight it is insane.\u00c2\u00a0 As Martha would say, it’s a GOOD THING!\u00c2\u00a0 Embrace it.<\/p>\n
