I’ve known Corey’s manager for years, even skied with him.\u00c2\u00a0 Love that he’s given Corey’s music away for free.\u00c2\u00a0 Listened to the grass roots development.\u00c2\u00a0 But I never got it until I saw Corey Smith live last night.<\/p>\n
WOW!<\/p>\n
Going to the gig is an obligation.\u00c2\u00a0 You check your BlackBerry and your watch and wonder when you can leave.<\/p>\n
So when you experience someone with unfamiliar material who rivets you, you take notice, because it happens…NEVER!<\/p>\n
Corey sat across from Felice at dinner.\u00c2\u00a0 He barely spoke.\u00c2\u00a0 Looked like the social studies teacher he used to be, only nerdier.<\/p>\n
But when he put on his sunglasses and took the stage, he was a STAR!<\/p>\n
Not like Katy Perry, more like Jimmy Buffett.\u00c2\u00a0 A man of the people.<\/p>\n
He was so good it was jaw-dropping.\u00c2\u00a0 I found myself singing along even though it was the first time through.\u00c2\u00a0 I laughed.\u00c2\u00a0 I got it.<\/p>\n
This guy needs to be on Leno TOMORROW!<\/p>\n
Fuck YouTube.\u00c2\u00a0 Like I said, sometimes you’ve got to break all the rules.<\/p>\n
And if Leno says no, I’d tell him he’s missing out and go to Letterman.\u00c2\u00a0 And Fallon.<\/p>\n
But Leno is a perfect start.\u00c2\u00a0 Because there’s nothing edgy about Corey Smith, unless you consider yourself edgy.\u00c2\u00a0 Have you ever said "fuck" to a cop?\u00c2\u00a0 Corey did, and wrote a song about it, "Fuck the Po-Po".\u00c2\u00a0 It expresses exactly how we feel, the frustrated everyman.<\/p>\n
If you’re good, it doesn’t stop growing.\u00c2\u00a0 All Corey Smith had to do was play and word spread, he played further and further from home, to bigger and bigger audiences.\u00c2\u00a0 People came back.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it was so much FUN!<\/p>\n
The songs are there.\u00c2\u00a0 As is the patter.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s all done.<\/p>\n
And now he’s got the song.\u00c2\u00a0 "Drugs".\u00c2\u00a0 It mixes alcohol and Ambien and health care and it’s got you laughing, because it’s honest in a way the Top Forty is dishonest.\u00c2\u00a0 There’s no gloss, just reality.<\/p>\n
All Corey’s got to do is play the song on Leno, and he’s made.<\/p>\n
Every other TV station is gonna call.\u00c2\u00a0 And he should go and play.\u00c2\u00a0 Because you don’t have to hold back when you’re real.\u00c2\u00a0 You can’t burn out on what’s real.\u00c2\u00a0 I can’t burn out on James McMurtry’s "We Can’t Make It Here", I can’t burn out on Don McLean’s "American Pie".\u00c2\u00a0 Corey’s great stuff is just like that.<\/p>\n
Then he’s got to open.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe for the Eagles.<\/p>\n
Then again, they’ve got too old an audience.<\/p>\n
Someone younger.\u00c2\u00a0 Who appeals to thirtysomethings.\u00c2\u00a0 People locked in their lives, married to their wives and their jobs and their kids.\u00c2\u00a0 But still twenty one on the inside.<\/p>\n
And the twenty one year olds get it too.\u00c2\u00a0 Because isn’t that what college is about, DRINKING?<\/p>\n
Come on, you know the drill.\u00c2\u00a0 You’re going to bars looking to get laid and then suddenly you’re the oldest guy in the bar and you’ll never get laid.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s how fast life goes by.\u00c2\u00a0 Who writes songs about that?\u00c2\u00a0 That aren’t sugarcoated, that touch your heart?\u00c2\u00a0 COREY SMITH!<\/p>\n
If you don’t get this, you never went to college, you’re straight edge and never took a drink, you’re so busy being hip, denying who you are inside, appealing to those who don’t really care, that you’re an empty vessel on a meaningless cruise through life.<\/p>\n
This guy has got it.<\/p>\n
Who’s going to own him?\u00c2\u00a0 Which TV host is gonna let him play on their show first?<\/p>\n
The raps, the delivery, Corey Smith is fully-formed, he’s ready.<\/p>\n
He’s paid his dues.<\/p>\n
Sometimes something is so mainstream, that’s where you go!\u00c2\u00a0 Bring it straight to the heartland.<\/p>\n
If this guy were doing this act in New York or L.A., he’d already be a star.\u00c2\u00a0 But those media centers ignore the south.\u00c2\u00a0 They just don’t get it.<\/p>\n
But just like Republicans embraced the southern strategy and won, he who embraces Corey Smith is going to win too.<\/p>\n
Country radio is thinking too hard.\u00c2\u00a0 Nashville is a club that excludes that which is truly honest and forthright, it’s the opposite of the roots of country music.<\/p>\n
Not that Corey’s exactly country.<\/p>\n
He’s American.<\/p>\n
And so are we.<\/p>\n
He’s a natural.<\/p>\n
