{"id":416,"date":"2006-05-16T08:18:40","date_gmt":"2006-05-16T16:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/05\/16\/we-cant-make-it-here\/"},"modified":"2006-05-16T08:18:40","modified_gmt":"2006-05-16T16:18:40","slug":"we-cant-make-it-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/05\/16\/we-cant-make-it-here\/","title":{"rendered":"We Can&#8217;t Make It Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlike our President, I read the papers, I&#8217;m not locked into my view, I&#8217;m collecting data 24\/7, and sometimes I change my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>I want to take back any and all kudos for Neil Young and his new album.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I didn&#8217;t heap praise on it.\u00c2\u00a0 I mostly lauded Neil for cutting the record so quickly.\u00c2\u00a0 But then I got e-mail from somebody who asked WHERE THE FUCK WAS NEIL LAST YEAR?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 Pink.\u00c2\u00a0 Neil Young.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody&#8217;s piling on now that Bush&#8217;s poll numbers are in the dumper.\u00c2\u00a0 But back when it was a risk&#8230;where were the musicians standing up THEN?<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there&#8217;s nothing on Mr. Young&#8217;s record with the hookiness, the sheer sonic joy of &quot;Ohio&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I like that Neil follows his own muse, but like too many denizens of the sixties, Neil&#8217;s best days are behind him.\u00c2\u00a0 But since Neil&#8217;s got a name, because the media is comprised of sheep, we&#8217;ve got endless reams of hype on his new record.\u00c2\u00a0 Really, it&#8217;s a circle jerk.<\/p>\n<p>What I lament about this new media era is there&#8217;s nowhere to go for honest information.\u00c2\u00a0 Disseminated by someone with no investment.\u00c2\u00a0 Who just wants to turn you on to something with no AGENDA!\u00c2\u00a0 We used to be able to trust FM radio.\u00c2\u00a0 With Sirius playlists tight as a drum, even on the JAM BAND channel, and with Zellner cutting tracks from libraries on XM willy-nilly, the hope of satellite radio is teetering.\u00c2\u00a0 And Internet radio is a joke.\u00c2\u00a0 Because nobody can afford to do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Nobody will invest in it.\u00c2\u00a0 Innovation has been curtailed by the long arm of the RIAA.<\/p>\n<p>All I&#8217;m looking for is a guru.\u00c2\u00a0 Whom I can trust.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the person I could trust most this past year was Steven King.\u00c2\u00a0 He of the horror novels.\u00c2\u00a0 Which I don&#8217;t even read.\u00c2\u00a0 Mr. King turned me on to the best track of 2005, James McMurtry&#8217;s &quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 In his monthly column on the last page of &quot;Entertainment Weekly&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I want to quote an appropriate passage here, but EVERY WORD of &quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot; is so poignant that I&#8217;ll have to print them ALL at the end of this article.<\/p>\n<p>But really, what makes &quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot; so great is the MUSIC!<\/p>\n<p>But the classic rendition, the solo ACOUSTIC version, has been pulled from the Web.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, you can download the electric take at: <a title=\"\"We Can't Make It Here\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.compadrerecords.com\/downloadpages\/wecant.html\" target=\"_blank\">&quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot;<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 And view an acoustic version, although not quite as good as the one that&#8217;s been disappeared, at: <a title=\"Acoustic Sunrise and Acoustic Sunset\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kfog.com\/shows\/acoustic.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Acoustic Sunrise and Acoustic Sunset<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what happened to this country of ours.\u00c2\u00a0 Where the independent can get no traction.\u00c2\u00a0 Where it&#8217;s not about quality, but SLOTS!\u00c2\u00a0 Radio used to be open.\u00c2\u00a0 But despite the Spitzer settlements, terrestrial radio has TIGHTENED UP!<\/p>\n<p>MySpace is a joke.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s breaking no bands.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just an endless morass of crap.\u00c2\u00a0 Swimming through the site is like venturing into the Sargasso Sea.\u00c2\u00a0 No thank you, I&#8217;ll pass.<\/p>\n<p>And Pitchfork is a deluge of reviews with no creed.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to take each one individually.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s just too much effort.<\/p>\n<p>Music on the Web is in its infancy.\u00c2\u00a0 We NEED some consolidation.\u00c2\u00a0 Some FILTERS!\u00c2\u00a0 To gain our faith and turn us on to great tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 All music was not created equal.\u00c2\u00a0 iTunes delivers no discovery.\u00c2\u00a0 And with so much music being produced today, one is tempted to give up.<\/p>\n<p>And the old fogeys lament the death of albums.\u00c2\u00a0 When I dare you to name two new good ones, playable throughout.\u00c2\u00a0 No, they&#8217;re endless.\u00c2\u00a0 Like an all nighter with Courtney from &quot;Survivor&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone who won&#8217;t shut up and has nothing to say.<\/p>\n<p>Society is more fluid in EUROPE than America.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, the odds of getting rich are greater OVERSEAS!<\/p>\n<p>The rich just got another tax cut.<\/p>\n<p>We live in a police state.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what they call it when the government spies on its citizens.\u00c2\u00a0 Which Bush, or is it CHENEY, is doing.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t need Bruce Springsteen recording Pete Seeger songs.\u00c2\u00a0 Played by a big band for old farts who are probably voting Republican anyway, now having made it in middle age, not wanting to sacrifice a single dollar.<\/p>\n<p>No, we need inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>James McMurtry was Columbia&#8217;s great white hope fifteen years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 Give Donnie Ienner credit for pushing the debut record.\u00c2\u00a0 Which gained no traction, because radio said James&#8217; voice wasn&#8217;t PLEASING enough.\u00c2\u00a0 Ever heard of Bob Dylan?<\/p>\n<p>But James stayed at it.<\/p>\n<p>And unlike the boomer acts, his days are not behind him.\u00c2\u00a0 His craft has matured.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s delivered.<\/p>\n<p>I know I&#8217;ve written about this song before.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve got to write about it again.\u00c2\u00a0 Because brilliance is so rare today.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody&#8217;s so jaded that their dicks get hard for almost nothing.\u00c2\u00a0 They just nod on the sidelines, waiting for the next David Blaine stunt.\u00c2\u00a0 We used to LIVE for music.\u00c2\u00a0 Listen to it to know what was going on.<\/p>\n<p>That spirit still lives.\u00c2\u00a0 However much the flame flickers.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream is a vapid wasteland.\u00c2\u00a0 Neil Young tried, it&#8217;s just that he didn&#8217;t cut one track that would have made &quot;After The Gold Rush&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 And, like I said, they took the BEST version of James&#8217; track down, it&#8217;s unavailable at any price.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless, of course, you steal it P2P, which I highly recommend.\u00c2\u00a0 But, if Compadre Records had any balls, they&#8217;d put the killer take back up, and I could tell EVERYBODY to download it.\u00c2\u00a0 Because people need to hear it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign<br \/>Sitting there by the left turn line<br \/>Flag on the wheelchair flapping in the breeze<br \/>One leg missing, both hands free<br \/>No one&#8217;s paying much mind to him<br \/>The V.A. budget&#8217;s stretched so thin<br \/>And there&#8217;s more comin&#8217;
