{"id":41,"date":"2005-06-07T17:41:42","date_gmt":"2005-06-08T00:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/06\/07\/podcasting\/"},"modified":"2005-06-08T09:27:32","modified_gmt":"2005-06-08T16:27:32","slug":"podcasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/06\/07\/podcasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Holy FUCK!\u00c2\u00a0 Did you watch Steve Jobs&#8217; presentation at the Worldwide <br \/>Developer&#8217;s Conference??<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s 1981 all over again.\u00c2\u00a0 MTV was seen as a sideshow.\u00c2\u00a0 A marginal effort <br \/>reaching few homes that wouldn&#8217;t impact the mainstream music business. But that <br \/>thesis was WRONG!\u00c2\u00a0 MTV REVOLUTIONIZED the music business.\u00c2\u00a0 But in order to <br \/>play, you had to have one thing&#8230;a video.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. acts had videos.\u00c2\u00a0 They used them as promotional tools.\u00c2\u00a0 For markets <br \/>where it was hard to get on the radio.\u00c2\u00a0 The result??\u00c2\u00a0 U.K. acts not only <br \/>dominated the early days of MTV, they went on to dominate the U.S RECORD CHARTS!\u00c2\u00a0 A Flock Of Seagulls.\u00c2\u00a0 Culture Club.\u00c2\u00a0 DURAN DURAN!\u00c2\u00a0 The only radio station <br \/>playing this stuff in the U.S. was MAYBE KROQ.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio programmers thought they were in control.\u00c2\u00a0 Major labels thought that radio was their marketplace.\u00c2\u00a0 When it <br \/>turned out that MTV was the driver.\u00c2\u00a0 These new acts were in HEAVY rotation on <br \/>MTV and they started to sell like GANGBUSTERS!\u00c2\u00a0 To the point where radio <br \/>started playing the MTV ACTS!\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, in the early days it was Human League and Soft <br \/>Cell, but then as time went on, as MTV entered TENS OF MILLIONS OF HOMES, the <br \/>aforementioned Duran Duran became SUPERSTARS!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, history is being rewritten now.\u00c2\u00a0 But, let us not forget, the American <br \/>labels were slow to the game.\u00c2\u00a0 Are they going to be slow to the game in <br \/>PODCASTING??<\/p>\n<p>If you watch Mr. Jobs demonstrate the new version of iTunes incorporating <br \/>podcasting, your jaw will drop.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like the iTunes Music Store, but everything <br \/>is FREE!\u00c2\u00a0 Why pay ninety nine cents for a copy protected track when you can <br \/>get ENDLESS entertainment FOR FREE!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, it&#8217;s even better than that.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s what the labels have dreamed of <br \/>forever&#8230;well, those who know the label business better than the labels themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 You see you can SUBSCRIBE to a podcast.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, AUTOMATICALLY, every time there&#8217;s a new podcast, it will be downloaded into your iTunes library.\u00c2\u00a0 AND, when you plug in your iPod, it will be seamlessly transferred to the device, where <br \/>you can listen to it ANYWHERE!<\/p>\n<p>I mean have you used the iTunes Music Store?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s seamless, and FAST!\u00c2\u00a0 And <br \/>now, there&#8217;s going to be all of this free entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>But what to listen to you ask?<\/p>\n<p>How long do you think it&#8217;s going to take until there&#8217;s a chart.\u00c2\u00a0 And you know <br \/>how charts work, those at the top end up getting MORE hits, becoming MORE <br \/>popular, to the point where complete unknowns, just like MTV, are going to become <br \/>STARS!<\/p>\n<p>I mean why listen to the commercials on terrestrial radio when you can just <br \/>plug your iPod into your car radio and listen to what YOU want to WHEN you want <br \/>to!!!\u00c2\u00a0 Terrestrial radio&#8230;your model is DEAD!<\/p>\n<p>And this is the major labels&#8217; worst nightmare.\u00c2\u00a0 This is why they&#8217;ve been <br \/>suing to halt P2P, not because of piracy, but because they&#8217;re fearful of LOSING <br \/>CONTROL!<\/p>\n<p>And that they&#8217;re going to do.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only are they not going to be able to <br \/>control these new podcasters with their strong-arm tactics, using their twentieth <br \/>century model, they&#8217;re not even going to PROVIDE THEIR WARES TO THESE PEOPLE!\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>FORCING THEM TO USE INDIE PRODUCT, DISTRIBUTED BY LABELS THAT KNOW ALL <br \/>EXPOSURE IS GOOD!!!\u00c2\u00a0 THAT IT&#8217;S ABOUT BREAKING ACTS, NOT PRESERVING AN OLD BUSINESS MODEL!!!<\/p>\n<p>The major labels are in the process of blowing it in podcasting the same way <br \/>they blew it in P2P.\u00c2\u00a0 The major labels should IMMEDIATELY license podcasters.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Charge them a fee to air their wares.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, it&#8217;s complicated, but to do <br \/>otherwise is to not only leave a ton of money on the table, but to insure your <br \/>extinction!!!\u00c2\u00a0 The key, just like with P2P, is to get as many people as possible to <br \/>be exposed to your wares and to CHARGE FOR IT!<\/p>\n<p>Satellite radio???\u00c2\u00a0 Why does Steve Jobs need Sirius in iPods if he&#8217;s got <br \/>PODCASTING???<\/p>\n<p>Think about it.\u00c2\u00a0 For all of last week&#8217;s scuttlebutt of low iPod demand, which <br \/>was untrue, in fact, Mr. Jobs is now ENSURING that the iPod will DOMINATE!\u00c2\u00a0 I <br \/>mean buy a competing product and be left out of the podcasting REVOLUTION???\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Oh, you can download podcasts elsewhere, and transfer them to another MP3 <br \/>device, like you can do with music today, but it&#8217;s not seamless, like it is with <br \/>iTunes and the iPod.\u00c2\u00a0 EASE OF USE BABY!!!\u00c2\u00a0 THAT&#8217;S what Apple is delivering.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>As the major labels try to cripple discs, Apple is developing NEW ways for the <br \/>public to be exposed to MORE creative work EASIER than ever before!<\/p>\n<p>And isn&#8217;t it funny that it&#8217;s called podcasting anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 Really, it&#8217;s just <br \/>MP3s. But, hit products have momentum, just like hit records.\u00c2\u00a0 Adam Curry called <br \/>it podcasting to piggyback on the iPod.\u00c2\u00a0 And it WORKED!<\/p>\n<p>Commercial radio podcasting&#8230;that&#8217;s like HBO with commercials, that is, of <br \/>course, if HBO had the programming of second-rate networks like UPN.<\/p>\n<p>Satellite radio??\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t have commercials.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to be available <br \/>easily.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what factory installation of radios is all about.\u00c2\u00a0 Sirius is <br \/>taking the tack of broadcasting the work of experts unavailable elsewhere.\u00c2\u00a0 Could <br \/>work.\u00c2\u00a0 XM has taken the tack of being the best music filter out there.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, <br \/>there&#8217;s always room at the top.\u00c2\u00a0 People will pay for a premium product.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>That&#8217;s what Apple has proven.\u00c2\u00a0 Just as long as Zellner and the new crew don&#8217;t fuck <br \/>it up, misunderstanding satellite&#8217;s mission.\u00c2\u00a0 That it can&#8217;t be narrow and <br \/>predictable like terrestrial radio, but must be wide and renegade, like podcasts, <br \/>but BETTER!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just astounding to watch.\u00c2\u00a0 The major labels think they&#8217;re in control, <br \/>but they&#8217;re not.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re locking up the product, suing customers, all the while <br \/>MISSING the future, which, stunningly, is right in front of them.<\/p>\n<p>The future is about niche.\u00c2\u00a0 And getting more people into more music.\u00c2\u00a0 You can <br \/>think otherwise, actually try to legislate, bully and sue.\u00c2\u00a0 But you&#8217;re not <br \/>going to win.\u00c2\u00a0 Because kids half your age, if not younger, are constantly <br \/>developing new paradigms.\u00c2\u00a0 The key is to MONETIZE these paradigms, not try to <br \/>eviscerate them.<\/p>\n<p>Get on the podcast bandwagon.\u00c2\u00a0 Issue compulsory licenses to podcasters.\u00c2\u00a0 Sue <br \/>anybody who uses your material WITHOUT a license.\u00c2\u00a0 But don&#8217;t try to impede <br \/>progress, don&#8217;t try to stop the future.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s happening.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s here.\u00c2\u00a0 Join in.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Have fun.\u00c2\u00a0 And make money.<\/p>\n<p>(Go to: <a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/qtv\/wwdc05\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/qtv\/wwdc05\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/qtv\/wwdc05\/<\/a> to see the Jobs speech.\u00c2\u00a0 He starts talking about podcasting at approximately 6:50 in.\u00c2\u00a0 You can drag the <br \/>cursor to this point to start there.\u00c2\u00a0 Be sure to watch the video in QuickTime <br \/>7.\u00c2\u00a0 You can enlarge the image without losing definition.\u00c2\u00a0 Yesterday, a Windows <br \/>prerelease version of the software was posted on Apple&#8217;s Website, you can get <br \/>it at: <a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.apple.com\/quicktime\/<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Holy FUCK!\u00c2\u00a0 Did you watch Steve Jobs&#8217; presentation at the Worldwide Developer&#8217;s Conference??
