{"id":4075,"date":"2011-04-22T06:44:05","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T14:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=4075"},"modified":"2011-05-03T07:01:24","modified_gmt":"2011-05-03T15:01:24","slug":"foreplaylong-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/22\/foreplaylong-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreplay\/Long Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m in Vail, Colorado.\u00c2\u00a0 For my birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Every year I check the schedule, to see if the mountain will remain open until April 22nd.\u00c2\u00a0 This year, with Easter being so late, it&#8217;s open until the 24th, only the second time in my relationship with Felice.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we&#8217;re staying in the condo.\u00c2\u00a0 Paid for by Felice&#8217;s dad.<\/p>\n<p>You see he was a musician.\u00c2\u00a0 Quite famous.\u00c2\u00a0 You might not remember his name, but you know his music.\u00c2\u00a0 Businessmen fade, but the work of talented musicians last forever.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, people will still be humming &quot;Moon River&quot; and singing &quot;The Pink Panther&quot; long after the overpaid media moguls are gone.<\/p>\n<p>And weather is always touch and go this time of year.\u00c2\u00a0 Usually you&#8217;re worried about too much sun, but this week we&#8217;ve been confronted with too much snow.\u00c2\u00a0 Which promptly turns to mush when the sun comes out.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes we&#8217;re making powder turns, other times navigating slush, but too often we&#8217;re plowing through a sticky concoction akin to Maypo.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s great to be here nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>And to get people to give up gardening and other warm weather pursuits, to get them to come skiing one more time, Vail concocts a festival entitled &quot;Spring Back To Vail&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Saturday was Train, they were stunningly good, proving that it&#8217;s all about the body of work, going on a journey and creating and if you&#8217;re really good, coming up with hits.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of Journey, tonight there was a cover band.\u00c2\u00a0 At Checkpoint Charlie.\u00c2\u00a0 In Vail Village.\u00c2\u00a0 Right outside the condo.\u00c2\u00a0 Playing eighties hits.<\/p>\n<p>And Felice was convinced they were going to finish with &quot;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin&#8217;&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>And this had me pondering the making of a classic.\u00c2\u00a0 This was not Journey&#8217;s first hit.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, Steve Perry wasn&#8217;t even in the initial incarnation of the band.\u00c2\u00a0 And during their heyday, Journey was pooh-poohed.\u00c2\u00a0 But then David Chase put their song at the end of &quot;The Sopranos&quot; and it became iconic.\u00c2\u00a0 All these years later.\u00c2\u00a0 The song has eclipsed the band.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s why they can go on the road with a faux singer.<\/p>\n<p>But this was not the last song of the night.\u00c2\u00a0 The band kept playing.\u00c2\u00a0 And the songs kept on winning.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Livin&#8217; On A Prayer&quot; reminded me of the eighties, when video was king and we were all addicted.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s why eighties music is so big.\u00c2\u00a0 We were all experiencing it in real time, on the nascent service known as MTV.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the Facebook of its day.\u00c2\u00a0 You didn&#8217;t go home and turn on your computer, you turned on MTV.\u00c2\u00a0 If a friend had it and you didn&#8217;t, you insisted he turn it on.<\/p>\n<p>But the final song of the night was not from that decade.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a complete surprise.\u00c2\u00a0 But when I heard that organ intro I was elated. It was Boston&#8217;s &quot;Foreplay\/Long Time&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>My mother broke her femur.\u00c2\u00a0 I know, I know, I just told you she broke her hip.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s true.\u00c2\u00a0 And I told you she checked herself out of rehab early.\u00c2\u00a0 And last night she fell off the toilet and in the process of dragging herself to the phone, because she was not wearing her medical alert necklace, because she&#8217;s invulnerable, she heard a crack, the same leg she broke before had now broken again, just below the original injury.<\/p>\n<p>And the phone started to ring and text messages started to fly and all I can say is we&#8217;ve got more questions than answers.\u00c2\u00a0 The EKG was too high, they couldn&#8217;t do the surgery today, was that because of a medical condition or a hospital fuck-up?\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve ever been in the hospital you know it&#8217;s the most untogether place in the world.<\/p>\n<p>And while all this is going down the band is playing in the background and then they hit &quot;Foreplay\/Long Time&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d just moved to L.A.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d just bought my first big stereo.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t love &quot;More Than A Feeling&quot;, but I bought the album anyway, maybe because of &quot;Rock &amp; Roll Band&quot;, any record with two good songs probably held a third.<\/p>\n<p>And Boston&#8217;s debut held a fourth.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Hitch A Ride&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>But the third was the last song on the first side, the third track, in fact, &quot;Foreplay\/Long Time&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>This is how it works.\u00c2\u00a0 You buy a new album.\u00c2\u00a0 You drop the needle on the vinyl.\u00c2\u00a0 You turn up the amp.\u00c2\u00a0 Sound starts coming out of the speakers.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re not texting at the same time.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re not watching TV or talking on the phone.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re focused.\u00c2\u00a0 And out of the pipe, out of the connection of capacitors and wires, comes this glorious sound.<\/p>\n<p>Really, listen to &quot;Foreplay\/Long Time&quot; on vinyl.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t say I love the long intro, the aptly-titled &quot;Foreplay&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But then, after an incredible flourish, the record gets quiet.\u00c2\u00a0 The organ sustains, ever so distantly in the background, and then you hear a sound like wind rustling through the trees, or birds on a limb, and then&#8230;the bass starts to pound, the guitar starts to wail and Brad Delp lays down in the musical bed and you&#8217;re in heaven.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s one of the great rock and roll losses, Brad Delp&#8217;s voice.\u00c2\u00a0 If you never heard it live, you never will.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re on a roller coaster.\u00c2\u00a0 And after going up the big hill and down you&#8217;re cruising through the twisty darkness and there are handclaps and an acoustic guitar and it sounds like nothing so much as an American version of a great Led Zeppelin tune.\u00c2\u00a0 And then, once again, the band starts to WAIL!<\/p>\n<p>And &quot;Foreplay\/Long Time&quot; debuted thirty five years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had disco, melisma, hip-hop and now &quot;American Idol&quot; since.\u00c2\u00a0 But somehow this track remains.\u00c2\u00a0 Because, like &quot;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin&#8221;, it&#8217;s a classic, spun on radio, heard in the background to the point where everybody knows it.<\/p>\n<p>And at this point, I&#8217;m inside the condo, with the door cracked, because it&#8217;s blowin&#8217; and snowin&#8217; out.<\/p>\n<p>But the sound of the music makes me jump to my feet.\u00c2\u00a0 I run outside.\u00c2\u00a0 I conduct the orchestral element of &quot;Foreplay&quot; with my hands&#8230; The music breaks down and I hang my head in anticipation, and then, and then, AND THEN the bass starts to thump, the guitars start to wail and at the top of my lungs I&#8217;m singing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s been such a long time, I think I should be goin&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m gonna be 58.\u00c2\u00a0 Sounds scary.\u00c2\u00a0 But like your parents said, one day it&#8217;ll happen to you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">And time doesn&#8217;t wait for me, it keeps on rollin&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ain&#8217;t that for sure.\u00c2\u00a0 Grab hold, do what you love, because one day you can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Sail on, on a distant highway<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the American dream.\u00c2\u00a0 The freedom to travel.\u00c2\u00a0 To let the wind blow through your hair as you pilot your own vehicle to the destination of your choice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I&#8217;ve got to keep on chasin&#8217; a dream<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I&#8217;ve got to be on my way<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I&#8217;m chasing it.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not afraid to admit it.\u00c2\u00a0 I care about money, but not as much as ubiquity.\u00c2\u00a0 Twenty years ago, I fell off the edge, I didn&#8217;t think anybody was listening.\u00c2\u00a0 The biggest thrill of my life is they&#8217;re listening now.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Well, I&#8217;m takin&#8217; my time, I&#8217;m just movin&#8217; along<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">You&#8217;ll forget about me after I&#8217;ve been gone<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I know that&#8217;s true.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing lasts.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re doing it for posterity, you&#8217;re sorely mistaken.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the joke.\u00c2\u00a0 Life is essentially meaningless.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a game you play to get to heaven.\u00c2\u00a0 You live and then you die.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Well, I get so lonely when I am without you<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes, we&#8217;ve got a bond.\u00c2\u00a0 And if I don&#8217;t write for a few days, I feel the loss, the absence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">But in my mind, deep in my mind, I can&#8217;t forget about you<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I wonder what you think.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m worried about being judged.\u00c2\u00a0 But once you stop playing, you&#8217;ve truly lost.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">And I take what I find, I don&#8217;t want no more<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s just outside of your front door<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this case, right outside the condo door.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not about collecting toys.\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s really not about money.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, it&#8217;s bad if you don&#8217;t have enough, but the reason all those bankers buy the concert tickets you want is because their jobs positively suck.<\/p>\n<p>No, life is about experiences.<\/p>\n<p>And what keeps you going is the memory of those experiences, illustrating how great life was and how great it still can be.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s exactly what I was thinking out on the patio just now.\u00c2\u00a0 How fucking great this life is.\u00c2\u00a0 That I love skiing and am glad I am still able to do it, to be in Colorado, looking at the sideways snow and the mountains fading in the waning daylight.\u00c2\u00a0 But the trigger is always the music.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the switch that keeps me going.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of that tonight.<\/p>\n<p>And now I&#8217;m reminding you.<\/p>\n<p>Because underneath it all I know we&#8217;re no different.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re all scared.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re all looking for pleasure and meaning.<\/p>\n<p>And we all know music makes us forget about our problems and dream of a better life.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"Re: Foreplay\/Longtime - John Boylan\" href=\"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2011\/04\/26\/re-foreplaylong-time\/\">Re: Foreplay\/Longtime &#8211;
