{"id":4053,"date":"2011-04-14T06:24:17","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T14:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=4053"},"modified":"2011-04-14T06:24:27","modified_gmt":"2011-04-14T14:24:27","slug":"what-comes-after","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/14\/what-comes-after\/","title":{"rendered":"What Comes After"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back when music was scarce, when it wasn&#8217;t free, when if you didn&#8217;t buy it you couldn&#8217;t hear it, unless you sat by the radio and hoped the station had taste as broad as yours, which was never ever the case, dedicated musos combed the cut-out bins.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s where we bought what we wanted to hear but weren&#8217;t willing to pay for, at least not full price.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where I discovered the Move.\u00c2\u00a0 They kept canceling at the Fillmore East, but when I finally bought an album I got it, and was primed for ELO.<\/p>\n<p>And then there was the Kinks&#8217; &quot;Lola versus Powerman and the Money-Go-Round, Part One&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a timeless treatise on fame that includes more keepers than the title track.<\/p>\n<p>And one day in Westport, at the back of a Sam Goody store, I bought the Stories album &quot;About Us&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>This was mere months before the band had its one and only hit, the ubiquitous &quot;Brother Louie&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But I purchased it because Michael Brown was in the band.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, that Michael Brown, of the Left Banke.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s not one song with the creepy wistfulness of &quot;Walk Away Renee&quot; and &quot;Pretty Ballerina&quot;, but &quot;What Comes After&quot; comes close.<\/p>\n<p>I know every lick on &quot;About Us&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Because I transferred it to cassette and promptly drove cross-country.\u00c2\u00a0 Repetition breeds integration.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;About Us&quot; is part of my life.<\/p>\n<p>And if Ian Lloyd were on &quot;American Idol&quot;, he&#8217;d blow the rest of the contestants away.\u00c2\u00a0 He had a voice like Steve Perry&#8217;s, pure and high.\u00c2\u00a0 But it was Michael Brown&#8217;s material that made the band sing.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s all good.<\/p>\n<p>But there are two incredible tracks, &quot;Love Is In Motion&quot;
