{"id":405,"date":"2006-04-28T18:49:20","date_gmt":"2006-04-29T02:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/04\/28\/living-with-war\/"},"modified":"2006-04-28T18:49:20","modified_gmt":"2006-04-29T02:49:20","slug":"living-with-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/04\/28\/living-with-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Living With War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The most important thing about Neil Young&#8217;s new album is how fast it was cut.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to a major label honcho today.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;ll crack you up.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re on a GLACIAL pace.\u00c2\u00a0 They want you to cut demos.\u00c2\u00a0 Co-write.\u00c2\u00a0 Work with different producers.\u00c2\u00a0 And then, even when your album is finished, they plot a release date with more thought than Rumsfeld and the President employed deciding when to invade Iraq.\u00c2\u00a0 As a result, by time the music reaches the public it&#8217;s so homogenized, so bland, so OVER that that people shrug and ignore it.\u00c2\u00a0 Or, if it does hit, no one takes it seriously.\u00c2\u00a0 It would be like going to couples-counseling with someone you broke up with two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>One hopes to make music that will last forever.\u00c2\u00a0 Ironically, you can only do this if you forget the future and do what feels right now.\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, we&#8217;re all just a blip in the history of the world, so the music is inherently evanescent, and it&#8217;s best to treat it that way.<\/p>\n<p>And, once a record is finished, the marketing campaign is ALSO plotted and executed with more aforethought than Rumsfeld, et al, employed.\u00c2\u00a0 There are electronic presskits.\u00c2\u00a0 Videos.\u00c2\u00a0 Appearances on MTV\/&quot;The Today Show&quot;\/ET.\u00c2\u00a0 Articles about the record in every publication known to man.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s carpet-bombing of the worst order.\u00c2\u00a0 And, consumers hate the major labels for it the same way the Vietnamese still hate America.\u00c2\u00a0 And the Iraqis too.\u00c2\u00a0 God, if only labels were paid for their exposure campaigns rather than the music they released&#8230;THEN they wouldn&#8217;t be in the economic doldrums.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of all this b.s., one should just put the record up on your Website for everybody to hear.\u00c2\u00a0 When it&#8217;s FINISHED!\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re lucky, listeners will care, and you can create some new music when the inspiration arrives, and they&#8217;ll be interested in that.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, if he weren&#8217;t Neil Young his record label wouldn&#8217;t let him release this record.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it comes too close on the heels of the PREVIOUS ONE, &quot;Prairie Wind&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to maximize profits.\u00c2\u00a0 Have the CD in the marketplace when the movie goes to DVD and cable.\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to confuse the customer.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to keep it easy, feed it to them like pabulum.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t respect listeners, play to the lowest common denominator, one step above mental retardation.\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to leave anybody out in your endless sales effort.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though by time you get done flogging the record to every known human being, over and over, NOBODY wants to have anything to do with the act EVER AGAIN!<\/p>\n<p>Neil Young&#8217;s been coasting on his reputation for eons.\u00c2\u00a0 Those remakes of Harvest&#8230;creepy.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, &quot;Greendale&quot; was a return to form, it made one hope.\u00c2\u00a0 But the story was so HOKEY!\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what happens when you lack inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Neil&#8217;s inspired now.\u00c2\u00a0 You can HEAR IT IN HIS MUSIC!<\/p>\n<p>Fire up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neilyoung.com\/\">http:\/\/www.neilyoung.com\/<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ll hear the energy, the spark that&#8217;s been lacking for DECADES!\u00c2\u00a0 Neil&#8217;s pissed, and as a result he&#8217;s created great work.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m only four tracks into the stream.\u00c2\u00a0 And so far, the first track, &quot;After The Garden&quot;, is the best.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe someday I&#8217;ll get through the whole album.\u00c2\u00a0 But the fact that you can&#8217;t fast-forward, that you can&#8217;t take the music away from your computer, shows that technological Luddites are still involved.\u00c2\u00a0 So, you want to make it hard for the listener, so you can sell a couple of hundred thousand albums, in a land of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS?\u00c2\u00a0 I hate to tell you, but the more people who hear the music, who have the MP3s, the MORE CDs you&#8217;re going to sell.\u00c2\u00a0 I know, it&#8217;s counterintuitive, but it&#8217;s fact.\u00c2\u00a0 When TV producers are streaming the hell out of their shows, experimenting with new forms of distribution, the record companies are STILL testing the waters.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s kind of like the Administration and global warming.\u00c2\u00a0 There are still DOUBTERS!<\/p>\n<p>Believe me, most people don&#8217;t give a shit about Neil Young.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s a has-been.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, to a kid that&#8217;s a fact.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s SIXTY!\u00c2\u00a0 And the jamming with Pearl Jam was over a decade ago.\u00c2\u00a0 If he wants to stay relevant, he&#8217;s got to loosen the screws.\u00c2\u00a0 And let his music OUT!<\/p>\n<p>As for touring with Crosby, Stills and Nash, one could say this is a bad time, then again, check Neil&#8217;s grosses, they&#8217;ve fallen off.<\/p>\n<p>Neil should be playing this music anywhere people will have him.\u00c2\u00a0 Not talking about the inspiration on TV, just strumming\/picking his guitar, letting it ALL OUT!\u00c2\u00a0 Letting the music speak.\u00c2\u00a0 Giving away on his Website MP3s of every live performance.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Springsteen is one of us.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s what put a dent in his career.\u00c2\u00a0 He used to be the loner.\u00c2\u00a0 But now, he&#8217;s playing the role of the accepted one.\u00c2\u00a0 Whereas Neil BEFITS the moniker of one of his greatest songs.\u00c2\u00a0 This loner is a prick who does whatever feels right.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s EXACTLY what we want from an artist.\u00c2\u00a0 A lightning rod.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, you pay attention when the bolts start flying through the sky.\u00c2\u00a0 When was the last time you stopped in your tracks and paid attention to an artist?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s astounding.\u00c2\u00a0 Thirty six years after writing and cutting a song in a week Neil&#8217;s back at it.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio&#8217;s not the same, don&#8217;t expect to hear any of the tracks from &quot;Living With War&quot; ubiquitously over the airwaves.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to rise above the din.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s why Bush and his cronies got away with their activities for so long.\u00c2\u00a0 But thank god someone is finally standing up.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ve got to stand up.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the public has been standing up to the major labels for six and a half years.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just that the corporations don&#8217;t realize it.\u00c2\u00a0 Traders are pirates just like Neil Young and Bill Maher and the Dixie Chicks are traitors.\u00c2\u00a0 Think about it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The most important thing about Neil Young&#8217;s new album is how fast it was cut.
