{"id":4049,"date":"2011-04-13T11:24:14","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T19:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=4049"},"modified":"2011-04-13T11:24:14","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T19:24:14","slug":"one-more-grammys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/13\/one-more-grammys\/","title":{"rendered":"One More Grammys"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"Grammy Chief Defends Award Cuts\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/nyti.ms\/eHhfzO\">Grammy Chief Defends Award Cuts<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s the hated Mike Greene who made the Grammys what they are today.\u00c2\u00a0 He wanted a big tent, he wanted a large membership, he wanted equality, if not pure independence, from the major labels and CBS.<\/p>\n<p>But Mike Greene is gone.<\/p>\n<p>And now we&#8217;ve got a caretaker.<\/p>\n<p>What do you do when your President has lost touch with the rank and file, when the organization no longer reflects your interests?<\/p>\n<p>You resign and start a rival organization.<\/p>\n<p>This is rampant in sports.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes it works, like the AFL, sometimes it half works, like the ABA, and sometimes it&#8217;s a joke, like the McMahon football league.<\/p>\n<p>But McMahon did not have the players.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;m down with awards.\u00c2\u00a0 Please watch this video for amplification:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"Richard Feynman - I Don't Like Honors\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f61KMw5zVhg&#038;feature=youtu.be\">Richard Feynman &#8211; I Don&#8217;t Like Honors<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the truth is the Grammy organization does not reflect the interests of independent artists, especially when they don&#8217;t make mainstream music.\u00c2\u00a0 To rail against an organization tied in with CBS is to miss the point.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe the Grammys are broken.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s time to start over.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the people complaining about category reduction don&#8217;t make it to the big show anyway. So why do they need the Grammys?<\/p>\n<p>All the indies should unite for a new show.\u00c2\u00a0 They should use new technologies to spread the word.\u00c2\u00a0 Like those brick and mortar record stores that won&#8217;t go out of business and their Record Store Day.\u00c2\u00a0 Say whatever you want about these establishments, but it&#8217;s fascinating that they get unique product and appearances from desirable acts.<\/p>\n<p>Why isn&#8217;t there Folk Music Day, with house concerts across the nation and attendant press? That&#8217;ll do more for the cause than an ignored Webcast.<\/p>\n<p>You have to understand that in the modern era it&#8217;s not about trying to change those in bed with corporations, but utilizing new tools to build something new, that changes the world.\u00c2\u00a0 That was what e-mail was about.\u00c2\u00a0 Then came the World Wide Web.\u00c2\u00a0 Now we&#8217;ve got mobile phones and texting and Facebook and YouTube.\u00c2\u00a0 If you build it, they truly will come.\u00c2\u00a0 But you must persevere and execution must attempt to be flawless.<\/p>\n<p>Do you really think the Grammys will be relevant in the future?\u00c2\u00a0 When a hit product like the Flip camera rises, succeeds and fails within four years?<\/p>\n<p>The Grammys are poised for future success just like the major labels.\u00c2\u00a0 Which they are not.<\/p>\n<p>A great musician is always tweaking his craft, always looking for new ideas, taking chances.
