{"id":3969,"date":"2011-03-26T07:55:41","date_gmt":"2011-03-26T15:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=3969"},"modified":"2011-03-26T07:56:14","modified_gmt":"2011-03-26T15:56:14","slug":"orchestral-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/26\/orchestral-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Orchestral &#8220;Friday&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fororchestra.com\/2011\/03\/25\/rebecca-black-friday-for-orchestra-53\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rebecca Black \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcFriday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 For Orchestra #53\">Rebecca Black \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcFriday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 For Orchestra #53<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is hysterical in its own right and requires no further comment or explanation, but I&#8217;m gonna give one!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all about context.\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to function in a vacuum.\u00c2\u00a0 You want to give your audience tools so they can participate and get hooked.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, the record is just the beginning.\u00c2\u00a0 And the audience owns the art, not the producer.<\/p>\n<p>This is the opposite of the philosophy Metallica employed with Napster.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, I know that was about theft of intellectual property, but the case was also made that we don&#8217;t want our work tapes distributed, we only want what we choose to be in the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Art is no longer static, it&#8217;s fluid.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s not only the studio version, but the remix, the multiple live takes.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like the classical era, before recording.\u00c2\u00a0 You start with notes on a page and the rest is open to participation.<\/p>\n<p>I enjoy this orchestral take of &quot;Friday&quot; more than the original.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s rooted in that confection, but it&#8217;s somehow more&#8230;familiar, yet better.<\/p>\n<p>We live in an agora with a constant exchange of ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 This is what those in power do not understand, whether they be fat cat bankers in this country or dictators in the Mideast.\u00c2\u00a0 The powers-that-be are all old school, they think they can dictate, stand above, when now, more than ever, we&#8217;re all in it together.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you want to survive you&#8217;ve got to acknowledge this and act upon it.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Lloyd Blankfein should donate a ton to charity and show up and fill sandbags where flooding is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>Obama should not play to bankers, but to twentysomethings who&#8217;ve graduated from college who are living with their parents and have no jobs.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it&#8217;s these young &#8216;uns who truly have power.\u00c2\u00a0 Because money and force can never eclipse the dissemination of ideas, which is essentially free with modern communication technologies.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, we pay for Net access, both wired and wireless, but we pay for electricity and gasoline and access is here to stay.\u00c2\u00a0 And those who want to cripple it are fighting the wrong battle.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to get in the river and swim, damming doesn&#8217;t work in this world.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing Rebecca Black&#8217;s studio version of &quot;Friday&quot; I could not envision this orchestral take.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s the power of inspiration and collaboration, someone else could!\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, the more the major labels exclude young employees the worse their business will become.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to let everybody in, let everybody lend a hand, and it&#8217;s not about the initial product so much as what it will ultimately turn into, when the public gets its hands upon it.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly everybody is playing in the arts.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a bad thing?\u00c2\u00a0 No, this is FANTASTIC!\u00c2\u00a0 The public is doing what the government will not.\u00c2\u00a0 Arts have been eviscerated from the educational curriculum, but that&#8217;s where you learn creativity, let&#8217;s give the underclass these tools, so they too can live enriched lives, can get ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Just like Richard Aschcroft and his cronies in the Verve took an obscure orchestral Rolling Stones track and turned it into &quot;Bittersweet Symphony&quot;, the artist here has made something interesting out of something irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, what a great age we live in!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca Black \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcFriday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 For Orchestra #53 This is hysterical in its own right and requires no further comment or explanation, but I&#8217;m gonna give one!
