{"id":3778,"date":"2011-02-06T08:28:46","date_gmt":"2011-02-06T16:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=3778"},"modified":"2011-02-06T08:28:46","modified_gmt":"2011-02-06T16:28:46","slug":"deadmau5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/06\/deadmau5\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadmau5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&quot;Rolling Stone&quot; is afraid to put Deadmau5 on its cover.\u00c2\u00a0 That space is reserved for Elton John.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, they&#8217;ve got to sell magazines.<\/p>\n<p>I love Elton.\u00c2\u00a0 Although reading the story he comes off like an old queen who may be sober but is still spreading too much love, like an inebriated college student.<\/p>\n<p>I was in college when Elton broke.\u00c2\u00a0 I just downloaded his &#8217;74 Christmas show today.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got no idea how good he was.\u00c2\u00a0 And maybe if we took away all his money and his toys he could be that good again.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;m not sure, because even if Elton wrote another &quot;Your Song&quot; it wouldn&#8217;t be a hit, not without beats underneath and Jay-Z toasting in the middle and Alicia Keys adding background reflections.<\/p>\n<p>You see you play to the mainstream, you buy insurance.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s too much money involved.<\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;re young and dumb, if you&#8217;re in high school or college, you&#8217;re not interested in insurance, you believe you&#8217;re going to live forever, you want to surf the zeitgeist.\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s this tastemaker population that is truly into music, driving the culture forward, not radio, certainly not record labels, certainly not the big promoters figuring out their platinum packages and Ticketmaster kickbacks.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest story in music last year was the Electric Daisy Carnival.<\/p>\n<p>This did not come out of nowhere.\u00c2\u00a0 Pasquale had been promoting for years.\u00c2\u00a0 In a territory too dangerous and too marginal for the big boys to care about.\u00c2\u00a0 But it was Electric Daisy that sold 185,000 tickets at L.A.&#8217;s Coliseum.\u00c2\u00a0 Let me inform you, U2 no longer sells every ticket.\u00c2\u00a0 But people are clamoring to go hear DJs.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not talk about the music.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, Elton was about melodies and lyrics, but the shows were always about a good time.\u00c2\u00a0 Getting high with your buddies, watching the parade of people, becoming energized by what came out of the speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Those days are back.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re living through a revolution in music.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s akin to what happened in Tunisia and now Egypt.\u00c2\u00a0 The public has had enough and the old powers are shocked and won&#8217;t let go.<\/p>\n<p>First it was overpriced CDs.\u00c2\u00a0 The Net gutted that paradigm, allowing you to steal or buy the one track you needed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Top Forty crumbled.\u00c2\u00a0 That format might be dominant, but that&#8217;s like saying Chi Chi Rodriguez is number one on the Seniors circuit, but he&#8217;s not, the leaderboard is peopled by never was duffers and club pros looking for some satisfaction.\u00c2\u00a0 Tell me why we should care again?<\/p>\n<p>And Electric Daisy triumphed when everybody else was stiffing.<\/p>\n<p>And &quot;Rolling Stone&quot; won&#8217;t risk putting Deadmau5 on its cover.<\/p>\n<p>In the days of yore, MOST PEOPLE had no idea who was on &quot;Rolling Stone&quot;&#8217;s cover.\u00c2\u00a0 When the magazine was making its name. But now it&#8217;s complacent and the youngsters don&#8217;t care about it.<\/p>\n<p>The Deadmau5 story is almost unreadable.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead of putting an expert on it, they assigned a no name.\u00c2\u00a0 If there are facts there, you miss them, because the article&#8217;s so poorly written.\u00c2\u00a0 Remember when the articles cut like butter?<\/p>\n<p>We are living in unbelievably exciting times.\u00c2\u00a0 Everything&#8217;s up for grabs.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re making an album for money, give up, almost no one buys one.\u00c2\u00a0 Even the vaunted Dr. Dre&#8217;s release will probably stiff, be this year&#8217;s &quot;Chinese Democracy&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Because you can no longer shoot for the stars.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to be grass roots baby.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to care about your audience.
