{"id":3525,"date":"2010-11-17T07:10:20","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T15:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=3525"},"modified":"2010-11-17T07:10:20","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T15:10:20","slug":"keith-urban-get-closer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/11\/17\/keith-urban-get-closer\/","title":{"rendered":"Keith Urban-Get Closer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When was the last time you listened to a new album and you liked it&#8230;THE FIRST TIME THROUGH!<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Get Closer&quot; is thirty three minutes long.\u00c2\u00a0 Just right.\u00c2\u00a0 Eight songs.\u00c2\u00a0 No filler.<\/p>\n<p>When I saw this album on the release schedule, I figured it was a greatest hits package, after all, it&#8217;s the fourth quarter and Keith&#8217;s last album came out only EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO!<\/p>\n<p>This is how you do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Give your audience more.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead of trying to reach everybody who doesn&#8217;t care, satiate the core.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m satiated.<\/p>\n<p>I almost couldn&#8217;t make it all the way through, I needed to write and tell you how good &quot;Georgia Woods&quot; is.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re the kind of person who loves rock music, who nodded his head to the Marshall Tucker Band, who likes to move his whole body with the groove of the track, this is for you!<\/p>\n<p>And about halfway through, Keith starts to wail&#8230;and yes, he can wail.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not a case of studio fakery.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen this guy live.\u00c2\u00a0 He can wring the notes out.\u00c2\u00a0 He hits every one.\u00c2\u00a0 And, unlike Brad Paisley, the material is not sophomoric, it doesn&#8217;t make you wince, it&#8217;s more than serviceable, it&#8217;s really good!<\/p>\n<p>And the cut before &quot;Georgia Woods&quot;, &quot;Without You&quot;, is equally fine.\u00c2\u00a0 Quieter, but not wimpy.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have just got it.\u00c2\u00a0 They can&#8217;t help but write catchy stuff, they know how to construct a song.\u00c2\u00a0 You get it the first time through.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know, some of your favorite albums you had to listen to multiple times to get.\u00c2\u00a0 But come on, so many of the greats infected you the very first time through.\u00c2\u00a0 Did you have to listen to Elton&#8217;s records multiple times to get them?<\/p>\n<p>My point is not to convince you, I don&#8217;t give a shit if you like &quot;Get Closer&quot;, I&#8217;m just saying a fan is fully satiated.\u00c2\u00a0 He breaks the shrinkwrap, downloads the tracks to his iPod and goes driving, walks in the neighborhood with a smile on his face.<\/p>\n<p>Ignore the calculated single.\u00c2\u00a0 Listen to all of &quot;Get Closer&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>This is not second-rate rock music.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the real thing!<\/p>\n<p>I like Zac Brown, and Lady Antebellum ain&#8217;t bad either, just a bit sophomoric, but Keith Urban is a cut above.\u00c2\u00a0 Country fans know.\u00c2\u00a0 But you may not.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t need to rank this album relative to every other release, I don&#8217;t need to analyze where it fits in Urban&#8217;s canon, I just want to listen to it, over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>Really.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Georgia Woods&quot; has got that makes you warm in your bedroom sound.\u00c2\u00a0 You know, the one where you&#8217;re the only one there but you don&#8217;t feel alone.\u00c2\u00a0 You find yourself airpicking along.\u00c2\u00a0 And when Keith starts to wail, you can&#8217;t help but stand up and genuflect.<\/p>\n<p>This is how it should be.\u00c2\u00a0 Take notice.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When was the last time you listened to a new album and you liked it&#8230;THE FIRST TIME THROUGH! &quot;Get Closer&quot; is thirty three minutes long.\u00c2\u00a0 Just right.\u00c2\u00a0 Eight songs.\u00c2\u00a0 No filler.
