{"id":3349,"date":"2010-09-15T07:27:51","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T15:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2010\/09\/15\/the-guitar-song\/"},"modified":"2010-09-15T07:27:51","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T15:27:51","slug":"the-guitar-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/09\/15\/the-guitar-song\/","title":{"rendered":"The Guitar Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">There is only so much oil in the ground<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Sooner or later there won&#8217;t be much around<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Do you know this record?<\/p>\n<p>Back in the early days of &#8217;74, we had an oil crisis.\u00c2\u00a0 There just wasn&#8217;t enough gas.\u00c2\u00a0 I remember waking up at seven to drive down to the Mobil station in Middlebury to fill up.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you know me, you know what an amazing story this is, because frequently I see the OTHER side of seven, but getting up that early is beyond anathema, it&#8217;s a crime against humanity!<\/p>\n<p>The record I&#8217;m quoting is Tower Of Power&#8217;s &quot;Only So Much Oil In The Ground&quot;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Can&#8217;t cut loose without that juice!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what I was doing at a party about forty streets south of downtown Salt Lake, cutting loose.\u00c2\u00a0 Living in Utah for two years, I&#8217;d finally found my crowd.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the amazing thing about starting over, going to college, beginning again in a new city, you start off with the wrong people, not that you realize this, then you run into the right people and you abandon the wrong people and on one hand you&#8217;re happy, but on the other you&#8217;re creeped out when you bump into your initial buds, it&#8217;s so uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t last much longer in the City of Salt.\u00c2\u00a0 Because I realized if I didn&#8217;t leave soon, I&#8217;d be there forever.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s not a life you want to live.\u00c2\u00a0 Amongst the ski bum scavengers trying to get by.<\/p>\n<p>This was the spring of &#8217;76.\u00c2\u00a0 And when I walked into this party, &quot;Only So Much Oil In The Ground&quot; was on the turntable.<\/p>\n<p>But not long thereafter there was this country number, which I&#8217;d never heard, but sounded so right.<\/p>\n<p>I asked my newfound buddy, who&#8217;d acquired the funds to be a ski bum by fishing off the coast of New Jersey, what this was.<\/p>\n<p>TENNESSEE STUD!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, he had to shout.\u00c2\u00a0 You know how it is.\u00c2\u00a0 With the music blasting and a beer in hand.<\/p>\n<p>HUH?<\/p>\n<p>You know, from &quot;Will The Circle Be Unbroken&quot;!<\/p>\n<p>I started looking through the pile of albums.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8216;Til I got to the cover I&#8217;d seen in photographs, but never up close, the three record set of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in Nashville, which contained no hits but had slowly permeated the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>When I relocated to Los Angeles, one of the first albums I purchased was &quot;Will The Circle Be Unbroken&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 I needed to hear &quot;Tennessee Stud&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of &quot;Tennessee\u00c2\u00a0 Stud&quot; the other night in the mountains, listening to Jamey Johnson&#8217;s &quot;Guitar Song&quot;, the title cut of his new album.\u00c2\u00a0 It was three cuts deep into the second of this two album package.<\/p>\n<p>The guy singing was not Jamey Johnson.\u00c2\u00a0 Turns out it&#8217;s Bill Anderson.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone this dyed-in-the-wool rocker knows the name of, but could not pick out of a lineup.\u00c2\u00a0 The music was rollicking.\u00c2\u00a0 Like a bunch of pickers got together one night to drink and play, like the Dirt Band and those cats thirty-odd years before.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what the entire album sounds like.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not gonna say I immediately loved every cut.\u00c2\u00a0 But I was struck how this album was unclassifiable.\u00c2\u00a0 It made no nod to commerciality.\u00c2\u00a0 Most records are made in genres.\u00c2\u00a0 Which have space on the radio.\u00c2\u00a0 And no genre is more rigid than today&#8217;s country.<\/p>\n<p>But the best country records don&#8217;t get airplay.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite modern country record?\u00c2\u00a0 Steve Earle&#8217;s &quot;Guitar Town&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Listen to that.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got little problem with Garth Brooks, but &quot;Guitar Town&quot; is more honest than anything the Oklahoman ever cut.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s one man&#8217;s story. Not made for the back row, but for no row, for the artist himself and the individual listening alone.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we used to be an army of individuals.\u00c2\u00a0 We only came together at the show.<\/p>\n<p>Today it&#8217;s the opposite.\u00c2\u00a0 We come together at the club, listen to the beat-infused music, and don&#8217;t play it at home alone.\u00c2\u00a0 Who needs to listen to it alone?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a party, and life ain&#8217;t one.<\/p>\n<p>You can make it by following your own muse.\u00c2\u00a0 You may or may not have a hit, but there are millions of people out there looking for music to tell them a story, to unfold in their ears, with a wisp of humanity, making them feel connected in a nation that specializes in alienation.<\/p>\n<p>Jamey Johnson is getting a lot of ink for two reasons.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s good, and he&#8217;s doing it his way.\u00c2\u00a0 Let this be a beacon to you.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=56_eUJzWOTg\">&quot;Only So Much Oil In The Ground&quot;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U5c1k949Zn4\">&quot;Tennessee Stud&quot;<\/a>-I can&#8217;t find the Dirt Band version, but this live Doc Watson take is a great approximation<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kn4xp13utpg\">&quot;Someday&quot;<\/a>-every track on &quot;Guitar Town&quot; is great, but start here<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is only so much oil in the groundSooner or later there won&#8217;t be much around Do you know this record?
