{"id":3223,"date":"2010-08-08T05:13:52","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T13:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=3223"},"modified":"2010-08-08T05:13:52","modified_gmt":"2010-08-08T13:13:52","slug":"quote-of-the-day-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/08\/08\/quote-of-the-day-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Quote Of The Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">&quot;&#8217;The goal in life,&#8217; Mr. Walker said, &#8216;is to work for yourself, and with your friends.&#8217;&quot;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lollapalooza and Its Promoters Rise on the Stage of Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/07\/arts\/music\/07lolla.html?_r=2&#038;ref=todayspaper\">Lollapalooza and Its Promoters Rise on the Stage of Chicago<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Corporatization killed the music business.<\/p>\n<p>Come on, the business was built by entrepreneurs.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone from Ahmet Ertegun to Brian Epstein to Robert Stigwood.\u00c2\u00a0 Forces of nature, these were go-getters with no backing, who needed to make it purely on their wiles.<\/p>\n<p>David Geffen and Irving Azoff were no different.<\/p>\n<p>But then all the labels were bought by corporations, after the Fortune 500 realized how much money there was in music.\u00c2\u00a0 One can argue that the music died in the early seventies, when Elektra and Atlantic and Asylum were fully integrated into Warner.<\/p>\n<p>Or, one can go later, to when Island and A&amp;M were bought out by PolyGram, and Alain Levy ignored Chris Blackwell and Jerry Moss.\u00c2\u00a0 Chris Blackwell?\u00c2\u00a0 He started off selling singles from the back of his motorbike.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only did he sign Traffic and so many other English acts, he made Bob Marley mainstream, by backing him up with rock players. Blackwell wasn&#8217;t just a businessman, he was a creator, with only his own bank account to fall back upon.\u00c2\u00a0 Ditto with Jerry Moss.\u00c2\u00a0 And isn&#8217;t it interesting that Jerry is successful in another field, horse racing: <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"14 Hands of Love On 17 Hands of Power\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmtc.com\/racinginfo\/pr\/index.php?article=14handsofloveon17handsofpower\">14 Hands of Love On 17 Hands of Power<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The last great hope of individual entrepreneurship in the music business occurred with rap.\u00c2\u00a0 Russell Simmons did it his way.\u00c2\u00a0 Because the corporate behemoths were not only not interested in his way, they weren&#8217;t even interested in the music, they certainly didn&#8217;t get the culture, they just wanted good-looking automatons who could be featured in expensive videos on MTV.<\/p>\n<p>At first MTV was a renegade operation.\u00c2\u00a0 Remember &quot;I Want My MTV!&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 Who&#8217;d rally around the outlet today?\u00c2\u00a0 But when advertisers said viewers were flipping the channels too much, MTV went to long-form programming, and music became at most the sauce, no longer the steak.<\/p>\n<p>And radio?<\/p>\n<p>Blame the Telecommunications Act of 1996.\u00c2\u00a0 Allowing radio consolidation.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio lost its soul.<\/p>\n<p>And isn&#8217;t it funny that what we&#8217;re constantly hearing the whiners complain about is they just can&#8217;t get in, they just can&#8217;t get the corporations interested.\u00c2\u00a0 The labels who break the acts, the corporations who sponsor&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t they get that this is death?\u00c2\u00a0 That those companies are run by egomaniacal bean counters who don&#8217;t give a shit about you and only care about their paycheck?<\/p>\n<p>The Net fosters entrepreneurship.\u00c2\u00a0 But it&#8217;s a renegade society, every man for himself, and people don&#8217;t like this, they&#8217;d rather bow to the old guard than roll up their sleeves and do it themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 The new acts say GIVE ME MONEY!\u00c2\u00a0 I say STARVE, figure it out for yourself and keep all the revenue.\u00c2\u00a0 Only tie up with an equal, someone else working from his own capital, who needs success.<\/p>\n<p>Read about the three Charlies who run C3.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t want to run away and work for their circus, I don&#8217;t know why you&#8217;re reading this.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re hands-on, they&#8217;re using the walkie-talkies, they&#8217;re building the infrastructure and their reputation.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re taking risks&#8230;first and foremost, for the joy.<\/p>\n<p>And Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza are huge successes.\u00c2\u00a0 ACL is the Glastonbury of the U.S., the brand name of the festival sells the tickets.\u00c2\u00a0 Attendees froth at the mouth when they speak of these events.\u00c2\u00a0 No one froths at the mouth when they go to a Live Nation shed.<\/p>\n<p>But they testify about Seth Hurwitz&#8217;s shed.\u00c2\u00a0 And although irascible, Jerry Mickelson has huge fans of his and Arny&#8217;s JAM.<\/p>\n<p>There was a music business before the Beatles, but the Liverpool foursome wiped the old slate clean.\u00c2\u00a0 Suddenly, there were all new players, making it up as they went, with acts giving the middle finger to mainstream society &#8211; the oldsters telling them how to behave.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, the acts just want to know where they can sell out.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, we know reality TV isn&#8217;t real, that Snooki and the Situation act for the camera.\u00c2\u00a0 Music used to be real.\u00c2\u00a0 How real is Lady GaGa?\u00c2\u00a0 When it&#8217;s truly real, you can shut your eyes and the music is enough.\u00c2\u00a0 Can&#8217;t GaGa go on the road without the trappings?<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m not here to castigate GaGa.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m just saying the old system is broken.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it&#8217;s run by corporations.\u00c2\u00a0 Music is the one thing you don&#8217;t need a degree to do.\u00c2\u00a0 And you don&#8217;t need much money.\u00c2\u00a0 You can do it on your own.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s what people are now doing.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re experiencing a revolution.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&quot;&#8217;The goal in life,&#8217; Mr. Walker said, &#8216;is to work for yourself, and with your friends.&#8217;&quot; Lollapalooza and Its Promoters Rise on the Stage of Chicago Corporatization killed the music business.
