{"id":319,"date":"2006-02-10T23:28:43","date_gmt":"2006-02-11T06:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/02\/10\/selling-files\/"},"modified":"2006-02-10T23:28:43","modified_gmt":"2006-02-11T06:28:43","slug":"selling-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/02\/10\/selling-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People don&#8217;t collect music anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Hang in there.\u00c2\u00a0 What I mean is&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 The days of amassing a giant vinyl or CD collection to impress your buddies are passe.\u00c2\u00a0 People, the younger generation especially, don&#8217;t treat music that way.\u00c2\u00a0 Music is something you possess for a while, and if you lose it, you replace it.\u00c2\u00a0 Which is why the concept of copy-protected tracks for a buck is so fucked up.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to kids.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ve either got a ton of stuff in their iTunes library they never listen to, or they&#8217;re deleting tracks constantly!\u00c2\u00a0 Did you ever throw out a vinyl album?\u00c2\u00a0 Not ME!\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve STILL GOT every single one I&#8217;ve bought.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve gotten to the point where when somebody sends me a track, I ask myself if I&#8217;m ever going to listen to it again, and if I think not, I delete it.\u00c2\u00a0 I figure if I ever really want it again, they&#8217;ll SEND IT TO ME AGAIN!\u00c2\u00a0 And, if a kid really wants a track again, they&#8217;ll rip the CD again, or go to the P2P service.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing&#8217;s that obscure anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 EVERYTHING&#8217;S available.\u00c2\u00a0 Music is fluid.\u00c2\u00a0 Why don&#8217;t the labels KNOW THIS??<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the dirty little secret.\u00c2\u00a0 Hard drives don&#8217;t last forever.\u00c2\u00a0 Neither do computers.\u00c2\u00a0 People lose their COMPLETE iTunes libraries CONSTANTLY!\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, do you really think fifteen years from now we&#8217;ll be listening to music in Apple&#8217;s 128 AAC format?\u00c2\u00a0 Give me a break!\u00c2\u00a0 Are you still using Windows 3.0?\u00c2\u00a0 Files will be of a higher quality, and if not smaller, storage will get cheaper and cheaper.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, the music people are buying today ISN&#8217;T FOREVER!\u00c2\u00a0 And, priced correctly, they&#8217;ll buy it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t sell the Doors catalog track by track for a buck.\u00c2\u00a0 Let somebody buy the WHOLE THING FOR FIFTEEN BUCKS!\u00c2\u00a0 Then they won&#8217;t give a shit when their hard drive fails, when the format changes, they&#8217;ll just buy it ALL OVER AGAIN!<\/p>\n<p>Think of Disney.\u00c2\u00a0 They used to sell their classic animated films for brief periods of time, EVERY SEVEN YEARS!\u00c2\u00a0 What happened to all those discs?\u00c2\u00a0 Why could they sell them again?\u00c2\u00a0 Because it was a DIFFERENT CREW who now had babies, and the price was low enough, it just didn&#8217;t pay to scrounge for an old copy of the title.\u00c2\u00a0 FURTHERMORE, the FORMAT had changed.\u00c2\u00a0 Who wants a tape when you can have a DVD?\u00c2\u00a0 Who wants a DVD when you can get it on the Net?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d say have a fire sale.\u00c2\u00a0 Load up EVERYBODY with the history of music.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not like the old days, when nobody had the storage space in their house.\u00c2\u00a0 God, you can buy a couple hundred gigs of storage for the cost of a couple of CD boxed sets, and then you can store TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TRACKS!\u00c2\u00a0 Who GIVES A SHIT if people listen to them, just as long as they PAY FOR THEM!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not about replacing CD sales with Net sales, it&#8217;s about getting EVERYBODY to buy a VAST quantity of music at a REDUCED PRICE!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People don&#8217;t collect music anymore.
