{"id":3139,"date":"2010-07-17T06:17:49","date_gmt":"2010-07-17T14:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=3139"},"modified":"2010-07-17T06:17:49","modified_gmt":"2010-07-17T14:17:49","slug":"e-mail-of-the-day-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/17\/e-mail-of-the-day-25\/","title":{"rendered":"E-Mail Of The Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">You probably saw this &#8211; but I find this rich.\u00c2\u00a0 On page 17 of Live Nation&#8217;s investor presentation, they present their vision of a &quot;new model&quot;<\/p>\n<p>3 months from an artist posting a song online to selling out arenas.\u00c2\u00a0 huh?\u00c2\u00a0 even the major labels don&#8217;t expect something to take off that fast.\u00c2\u00a0 is this a company that understands artist development?\u00c2\u00a0 or is trying to sell a story to wall street?\u00c2\u00a0 actually, it&#8217;s both &#8211; but when forced to choose between one or the other it&#8217;s clear where they are coming down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cBO2Do\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Live Nation's investor presentation\">Live Nation&#8217;s investor presentation<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This slide must be seen to be believed (or disbelieved, as the case may be!)<\/p>\n<p>Click on the link, wait for the PDF to download and click on slide 17, where you will see that the &quot;Old Model&quot; is 2-5 years from writing a song to selling out an arena.\u00c2\u00a0 And now, under the &quot;New Model&quot;, it takes THREE MONTHS!<\/p>\n<p>Positivelymotherfuckinginsane.<\/p>\n<p>Who do we fire first?\u00c2\u00a0 Rapino or Garner?\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure if this is an SEC violation, outright lying to the investor public, but not only is it a gross distortion of reality, it&#8217;s evidence that neither executive is into either artist development or CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT!<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who lived through the MTV era of the eighties and nineties knows that instant success is followed by instant decline.\u00c2\u00a0 Therefore, forcing purveyors to constantly reinvent the wheel.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what&#8217;s wrong in the movie business, that&#8217;s why they emulated the music business and went into sequels.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, that&#8217;s what a career in music used to be, endless sequels!\u00c2\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s one hit wonders, which is why the labels are screwed.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s worse.\u00c2\u00a0 Almost no one has a hit that can deliver sold out arenas.<\/p>\n<p>Look at Rihanna, who canceled shows&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t she have enough hits?\u00c2\u00a0 She can&#8217;t sell out arenas.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Bieber can sell out arenas today, but Mel Gibson is the biggest story online this week&#8230;and soon, after kicking the carcass, no one will want anything to do with the actor.<\/p>\n<p>Come on.\u00c2\u00a0 Talk about spin.\u00c2\u00a0 This verges on outright lies.\u00c2\u00a0 And is bad for both music and Live Nation.
