Kids are the new stars.<\/p>\n
No, I’m not talking about those twits on "American Idol".\u00c2\u00a0 I’m just talking about everybody who’s not being purveyed by the major labels, movie studios and "National Enquirer"\/"Us".<\/p>\n
Used to be people felt powerless.\u00c2\u00a0 That they didn’t have a voice.\u00c2\u00a0 Now everything’s completely topsy-turvy.\u00c2\u00a0 Kids think THEY have the voice.\u00c2\u00a0 They decide what’s cool.\u00c2\u00a0 They comprise a jury of tens of millions and THEY get to decide thumbs-up or thumbs-down.\u00c2\u00a0 But, they’ve stopped looking at what the usual suspects are purveying and are starting to judge THEIR OWN works.<\/p>\n
Takes talent to be a musician.<\/p>\n
Oh, that’s why kids don’t respect Ashlee or Jessica.\u00c2\u00a0 Or Lindsey.\u00c2\u00a0 All those auto-tuned buffed up and polished icons dirty old men are foisting upon them.\u00c2\u00a0 Kids have seen the man behind the curtain.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 And they laugh.\u00c2\u00a0 Because they can pull the levers better than he can.\u00c2\u00a0 Because when it comes to technology, THEY rule.<\/p>\n
It’s all about tools.<\/p>\n
It USED to be about marketing.<\/p>\n
But now kids control that too.\u00c2\u00a0 There’s a marketing bonanza taking place every day at 2:30.\u00c2\u00a0 When kids come home from school.\u00c2\u00a0 They plop their asses down in front of their computers and COMMUNICATE!\u00c2\u00a0 Forge bonds and arbitrate what’s cool.\u00c2\u00a0 They trust each other with a passion that no multinational corporation can generate.\u00c2\u00a0 And, they know TONS of their brethren.\u00c2\u00a0 Kids today know EVERYBODY in their hometown, never mind elsewhere.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s what IM and blogging has done.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s just like putting Duran Duran on MTV twenty-odd years ago.<\/p>\n
Kids still like music.\u00c2\u00a0 And they like movies and TV too.\u00c2\u00a0 But they only respect quality and talent.\u00c2\u00a0 And you should know this and sell your wares with this in mind.\u00c2\u00a0 But the new story, the EMERGING story, is how kids are now creating their own art form.\u00c2\u00a0 Via VIDEO!<\/p>\n
You don’t want to hear the musical works of the kid next door.\u00c2\u00a0 But, you never know, he could put together an hilarious video.\u00c2\u00a0 Or certainly turn you ON to a funny or interesting video.<\/p>\n
The sale of video productions on the Web…\u00c2\u00a0 That’s not the big story.\u00c2\u00a0 The exchange of information about and the watching of homegrown videos on the Web, now THAT’S the story.<\/p>\n
Every kid has access to a digital camera.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don’t doubt me, you’ve never heard of Flickr, or Photobucket.<\/p>\n
But now, many kids have access to digicams.\u00c2\u00a0 Digital video cameras.\u00c2\u00a0 And, having watched a billion hours of television, and video requiring A LOT less talent to create than music, they’re rolling their own.<\/p>\n
Go to http:\/\/www.youtube.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Or http:\/\/video.google.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 You’ll start to get the idea.<\/p>\n Youtube doesn’t seem to have enough server power.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s a lot more glitch-prone than Google.\u00c2\u00a0 But it’s got a renegade feel.\u00c2\u00a0 Like the service is owned by its constituents, kids, not the thirtysomething techies of Google.\u00c2\u00a0 Google ain’t perfect, but with a broadband connection (necessary for both, and an illustration how technological advancements beget creative opportunities), you can watch, as the kids say, pretty good.<\/p>\n What should you watch?<\/p>\n On Youtube, start with the featured videos, on the homepage.<\/p>\n On Google, skip past the pay fare, with the ridiculous proprietary DRM, and go directly to "Popular".\u00c2\u00a0 Or search on "Mastercard".\u00c2\u00a0 And watch the banned commercials.\u00c2\u00a0 Most specifically, the one at: Mastercard<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0This is a Web legend.\u00c2\u00a0 E-mailed around EONS ago.\u00c2\u00a0 But now it’s being hosted somewhere.\u00c2\u00a0 Where EVERYBODY can have access.\u00c2\u00a0 Almost instantly.<\/p>\n And you wonder why MTV features its audience on TV.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s what kids want to SEE!\u00c2\u00a0 THEMSELVES!<\/p>\n This is the new MTV.\u00c2\u00a0 And, like the original MTV, its heyday ain’t gonna last forever.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s a fad.\u00c2\u00a0 But with legs of at least a year, if not THREE years.<\/p>\n Want to blow up a band?<\/p>\n Release all the footage from a video shoot on its Website.\u00c2\u00a0 Along with a free copy of the song.\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, SHOOT some video, put up some promotional videos, just for kids to employ.\u00c2\u00a0 IN CREATING THEIR OWN VIDEOS!\u00c2\u00a0 Trent Reznor did this with his last album.\u00c2\u00a0 Allowed those with GarageBand to remix tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 But, you needed GarageBand, and the idea had limited appeal.\u00c2\u00a0 Shoot your own video, maybe containing you lip-synching along with a star?\u00c2\u00a0 THAT people would grab on to.\u00c2\u00a0 (This is one of the most viewed videos on Youtube:\u00c2\u00a0 what i’ve been looking for<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 Search on "lip-synch" for tons more.)<\/p>\n The major labels have it all wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 Music blows up when you release it.\u00c2\u00a0 When you allow people to play with it.\u00c2\u00a0 To get INVOLVED with the act.\u00c2\u00a0 The sale of an inert disc is so last century.<\/p>\n You can’t stop it, you can only throw in with it.<\/p>\n <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Kids are the new stars.
