{"id":291,"date":"2006-01-18T13:49:18","date_gmt":"2006-01-18T20:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/01\/18\/rhinocast-17-neil-young\/"},"modified":"2006-01-18T13:49:49","modified_gmt":"2006-01-18T20:49:49","slug":"rhinocast-17-neil-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/01\/18\/rhinocast-17-neil-young\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhinocast #17 &#8211; Neil Young"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Well I used to drive a cab you know<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, not really.<\/p>\n<p>But I listened to a lot of Neil Young.\u00c2\u00a0 Playing &quot;Down By The River&quot; and &quot;Don&#8217;t Let It Bring You Down&quot; brought me to the debut.\u00c2\u00a0 Which seems to have been forgotten.\u00c2\u00a0 This podcast is about that very first record, containing the above-quoted track, &quot;The Last Trip To Tulsa&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I guess we love Neil Young because he seems to be beholden to no one.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, it was HE who wrote &quot;This Note&#8217;s For You&quot;, not Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton or even Keith Richards.\u00c2\u00a0 He may be a prickly bastard, but he&#8217;s the last guy who hasn&#8217;t sold out.\u00c2\u00a0 And therefore we can believe in him.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to this very first record will inform you of how it used to be.\u00c2\u00a0 When music was the highest art form.\u00c2\u00a0 And people were exploring.\u00c2\u00a0 And marketing was secondary to music.\u00c2\u00a0 Neil sat in the studio and laid down his truth.\u00c2\u00a0 To hear this record is like staying up all night with a guy you just met.\u00c2\u00a0 Who you might never ever see again.\u00c2\u00a0 But the experience left an indelible mark, you can&#8217;t forget it.<\/p>\n<p>Neil Young is winter music.\u00c2\u00a0 For when the landscape is bleak.\u00c2\u00a0 When you&#8217;re in your own mind.\u00c2\u00a0 When you&#8217;re contemplating.\u00c2\u00a0 His records are the opposite of what&#8217;s purveyed in the mainstream today.\u00c2\u00a0 Can you imagine Neil at a Hollywood hotspot?\u00c2\u00a0 You know Neil didn&#8217;t have a lot of friends in high school, and still doesn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, he&#8217;s not a loner, he&#8217;s got just enough.\u00c2\u00a0 And just enough is all you need.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s records like this that built this music business edifice.\u00c2\u00a0 Its caretakers have fucked up the store royally, but thank god we still have Dead Sea Scrolls like Neil Young&#8217;s debut to experience, to remind us what it&#8217;s all about.<\/p>\n<p>This is about as good as I can do.\u00c2\u00a0 Or should I say as well as I can do.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows.<\/p>\n<p>Listen.<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>You can listen to or download the podcast from Rhino&#8217;s site: <a href=\"http:\/\/rhino.com\/rzine\/rhinocasts\/index.lasso\">http:\/\/rhino.com\/rzine\/rhinocasts\/index.lasso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can subscribe in the iTunes Music Store.\u00c2\u00a0 Just search for &quot;Lefsetz&quot; and the Rhinocast will come up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well I used to drive a cab you know Well, not really.
