{"id":283,"date":"2006-01-13T09:48:50","date_gmt":"2006-01-13T16:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/01\/13\/tim-easton\/"},"modified":"2006-01-13T09:51:24","modified_gmt":"2006-01-13T16:51:24","slug":"tim-easton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2006\/01\/13\/tim-easton\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Easton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I spent all day listening to the radio trying to discover something new, that I wanted to write about.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though I&#8217;ve got two satellite services, and jumped between them, I found nothing, it was depressing.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s because the deejays were programming what they thought we WANTED to hear.\u00c2\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t interest me.\u00c2\u00a0 Just play what you&#8217;d spin at home.\u00c2\u00a0 Imagine I&#8217;m living in a picture frame on the wall, just observing, just listening.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what&#8217;s wrong with America.\u00c2\u00a0 The POSTURING!\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody&#8217;s so worried about their IMAGE!\u00c2\u00a0 Then again, did you read that 22% of the public judged a man negatively if he was seen with an overweight woman?\u00c2\u00a0 That study was paired with another with one that said Americans were no longer so concerned with being fat.\u00c2\u00a0 <a title=\"Survey: Some Americans OK With Being Fat\" href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/F\/FIT_FAT_ATTITUDES?SITE=NYBUE&#038;SECTION=HOME&#038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" target=\"_blank\">Survey: Some Americans OK With Being Fat<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 Seems they can accept themselves, but not others.\u00c2\u00a0 Or maybe it&#8217;s a different group.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe the thins hate the fats.\u00c2\u00a0 But those skinny women in &quot;Us&quot; never touched my soul.\u00c2\u00a0 Being a size 0 doesn&#8217;t mean you stand for anything, would be any fun to be around.\u00c2\u00a0 That comes from the INSIDE!\u00c2\u00a0 We crave authenticity.\u00c2\u00a0 We slide right off of slick surfaces.\u00c2\u00a0 We need something to hook into.\u00c2\u00a0 Two dimensions give us nowhere to insert ourselves, we need three, to get our hooks in.\u00c2\u00a0 But everybody in America is afraid of revealing their true selves.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless it&#8217;s on reality TV, for a paycheck.\u00c2\u00a0 But the people on those shows have no talent.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re interested in people who RADIATE an innate honesty, people who reach out and grab US!<\/p>\n<p>I was coursing through the iTunes Music Store Celebrity Playlists.\u00c2\u00a0 The celebs seemed most worried how we would PERCEIVE them.\u00c2\u00a0 This was just another piece of the publicity puzzle, selling their latest project.\u00c2\u00a0 Just further evidence of the unending artifice.\u00c2\u00a0 That has us turning our backs.\u00c2\u00a0 But I ultimately found some honesty.\u00c2\u00a0 Where I didn&#8217;t expect it.\u00c2\u00a0 First with Steve Perry.\u00c2\u00a0 Lord only knows why he&#8217;s here, the guy won&#8217;t even go on the road, I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s promoting anything, and I was never a Journey fan to begin with, however I do admit to a fondness for his solo hit &quot;Oh Sherrie&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 I was stunned that Steve put TLC&#8217;s &quot;Waterfalls&quot; first on his list.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean this is the whitest guy on the planet.\u00c2\u00a0 But, I too liked &quot;Waterfalls&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 And there was &quot;Can&#8217;t Find My Way Home&quot;, a true classic that&#8217;s on its way to being forgotten.\u00c2\u00a0 But the keeper was by the Eels.\u00c2\u00a0 A track entitled &quot;In The Yard, Behind The Church&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Jeannie&#8217;s Diary&quot; is the most-played track in my iTunes library, with 214 complete spins.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve come to learn that E is, as Steve puts it, SINCERE!\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m looking for sincerity.\u00c2\u00a0 And, Steve had that great Filter song, &quot;Take A Picture&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But he turned me on to two more winners, the System&#8217;s &quot;Don&#8217;t Disturb This Groove&quot; and Kasabian&#8217;s &quot;Club Foot&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I thought I&#8217;d given Kasabian a chance, but I needed Mr. Perry to pick out a track.\u00c2\u00a0 And the System cut seems so LEFT FIELD!\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s when I knew that Steve was a music lover, that I&#8217;d like to spend an evening playing tracks with him.\u00c2\u00a0 Who knew?<\/p>\n<p>But even more authentic was Jeff Daniels.\u00c2\u00a0 Who admitted to only attending ONE Lakers game (aren&#8217;t the celebrities given free tickets with the title to their new house in the Hollywood Hills?)\u00c2\u00a0 The kind of stuff Jeff likes is the kind I desire in the middle of the night, when I&#8217;m alone.\u00c2\u00a0 I felt I could be his friend, because he understood MOOD!\u00c2\u00a0 The winner he hipped me to was Kelly Joe Phelps&#8217; &quot;Hard Time Killin&#8217; Floor Blues&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>But the guy who turned me on to the song I&#8217;m writing about, is the same guy who turned me on to James McMurtry&#8217;s &quot;We Can&#8217;t Make It Here&quot;, Stephen King.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, I&#8217;m not even a King fan.\u00c2\u00a0 But this guy doesn&#8217;t give a shit about his image, he&#8217;s pure Maine.\u00c2\u00a0 Just a guy from one step beyond the borderline, who couldn&#8217;t posture if his life depended on it.\u00c2\u00a0 And, Stephen&#8217;s known for going for the hard stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 But, there were quiet things.\u00c2\u00a0 By acts like Donna the Buffalo.\u00c2\u00a0 Have you heard their &quot;Love and Gasoline&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 Magic.\u00c2\u00a0 And, be sure to check out Chuck Prophet&#8217;s &quot;Rise&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But you&#8217;ll have to either buy all of the above or steal them.\u00c2\u00a0 You can get Tim Easton&#8217;s &quot;Carry Me&quot; Kristin Hersh talked about giving her new music away for free on the Web, this being the only way she could spread the word.<\/p>\n<p>I got e-mail from a manager today whose act gave away their tracks on MySpace last month as a Christmas gift and saw SALES of their album go up.<\/p>\n<p>I was downloading live tracks from the Bruce Hornsby fan site bruuuce.com and I noticed they were providing Bruce&#8217;s video for &quot;Fields Of Gray&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 I started to watch it.\u00c2\u00a0 And suddenly realized the video era was over.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, you might shoot a live show and put it up on your Website, but no real act is going to authorize the spending of more than their album budget to promote one track.\u00c2\u00a0 What with actors playing roles and special effects swirling.\u00c2\u00a0 The MTV era is finally done.\u00c2\u00a0 Video is dead.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the MUSIC now.<\/p>\n<p>Although Tim Easton is giving his music away for free, you can buy it too.\u00c2\u00a0 Works both ways.\u00c2\u00a0 But what really inured me to this guy was, despite being on New West Records, he WROTE HIS OWN BIO!<\/p>\n<p>Yup, click on &quot;Press Kit&quot;
