{"id":2810,"date":"2010-04-09T19:13:09","date_gmt":"2010-04-10T03:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2810"},"modified":"2010-04-10T10:45:22","modified_gmt":"2010-04-10T18:45:22","slug":"david-heinemeier-hansson-at-startup-school-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/04\/09\/david-heinemeier-hansson-at-startup-school-08\/","title":{"rendered":"David Heinemeier Hansson at Startup School 08"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just blew half an hour watching this guy when I should be on the freeway to the Valley, to pick up Felice and go to Staples to see Michael Buble.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Buble?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t give a shit about Buble, his manager is a friend of mine.\u00c2\u00a0 No one is more passionate about his acts than Bruce Allen, he&#8217;s a thinker, and a doer, and the tour is promoted by an independent, Don Fox, and even if I don&#8217;t like the music I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll hear words of wisdom from Bruce.\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, even though Buble is not changing the face of music history, he is filling a need, he&#8217;s not shooting to reach everybody, but a certain cult, that&#8217;s actually quite large, primarily of housewives, and that&#8217;s exactly what David Heinemeier Hansson is talking about in this clip.<\/p>\n<p>Who?<\/p>\n<p>The guy from 37signals.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone e-mailed me this clip.\u00c2\u00a0 I was intrigued.\u00c2\u00a0 And now I&#8217;m writing to you, because this guy is such a fucking rock star.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, save me the e-mails that delineate a rock star plays music&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, even Lady GaGa is not a rock star.\u00c2\u00a0 First and foremost, she doesn&#8217;t play ROCK!\u00c2\u00a0 Secondly, she&#8217;s fake, it&#8217;s all artifice, it&#8217;s all studied, she&#8217;s not intimately honest.\u00c2\u00a0 Unlike David Heinemeier Hansson.<\/p>\n<p>Who?<\/p>\n<p>A successful code writer.<\/p>\n<p>How come all the brains, all the creative people are now in tech?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because that&#8217;s where the money is.\u00c2\u00a0 And you don&#8217;t have to report to your parents, or your grandparents (well, at least they&#8217;re pushing Doug Morris aside).\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got a blank canvas, you can do it your way.\u00c2\u00a0 And didn&#8217;t Burger King finally make a comeback when it embraced this philosophy?\u00c2\u00a0 Who wants to work for the man?\u00c2\u00a0 Not me.\u00c2\u00a0 Who wants to be told what to do, when to wake up, when to report to work, how to work?\u00c2\u00a0 Today&#8217;s musicians, that&#8217;s who.\u00c2\u00a0 They want to sign a 360 contract and put themselves in the hands of the label, telling them who and how and what to record, when to show up for interviews, all for the bucks.\u00c2\u00a0 Huh?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, David Heinemeier Hansson is into the bucks.\u00c2\u00a0 But he asks, how many bucks?\u00c2\u00a0 And he decries selling out.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you watch this video, you can get his philosophy, and some business tips.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, if you&#8217;re thinking of starting a music distribution scheme, David Heinemeier Hansson should disabuse you of this notion, don&#8217;t shoot for the stars, the odds are low, start small!<\/p>\n<p>But the reason I&#8217;m writing this is I&#8217;m riveted by this guy.\u00c2\u00a0 When he utters &quot;fuck&quot; about halfway in, I laughed out loud.\u00c2\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t give a shit what anybody thinks other than him.<\/p>\n<p>What a concept.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what being a rock star is.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s not what we have today.<\/p>\n<p>Of course you have to write hit music.\u00c2\u00a0 Then again, Christopher Cross had monster singles and he&#8217;s not a rock star, he can&#8217;t sell out a shed.\u00c2\u00a0 Ever seen a commercial with Christopher Cross?<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s Iggy Pop.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, many fewer people think his music is a hit, but those people TRULY BELIEVE SO!\u00c2\u00a0 And they&#8217;re still interested in what he has to say today.\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s never what the media expects, it&#8217;s never safe.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, what did he say at his R&amp;RHOF induction?\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Roll over Woodstock!\u00c2\u00a0 We won!&quot;\u00c2\u00a0 Wasn&#8217;t he supposed to thank the Academy, kiss a ton of butt, now that they finally accepted him?\u00c2\u00a0 NO! <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrotimes.com\/blog\/musicblahg.asp?perm=1049\">IGGY POP: BEST.
