What does Universal MEAN?\u00c2\u00a0 Or Warner Brothers or Interscope or Sony or even Capitol.\u00c2\u00a0 They’re all record labels, but who KNOWS what they release.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, doesn’t Capitol sell Sinatra, the Band the Beatles and YELLOWCARD?\u00c2\u00a0 If you know somebody who wants ALL those acts…hell, you couldn’t know a person like that.<\/p>\n
Things used to be easier.\u00c2\u00a0 There used to be fewer than 5,000 albums released a year.\u00c2\u00a0 But now, with 50,000+ albums a year, HOW IN THE HELL ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT’S OUT??<\/p>\n

Hell, that’s like combing the bins in the record store of yore, but with a BAZILLION more titles.<\/p>\n
You can’t know from terrestrial radio.\u00c2\u00a0 Or television.\u00c2\u00a0 They play almost NOTHING!<\/p>\n
You can go to Yahoo Music, but you’ve got the same situation you do with the aforementioned labels, it’s a SMORGASBORD!\u00c2\u00a0 With the most generic, most hyped stuff right up front.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, you can dig deeper, but where in the hell are you going to GO?\u00c2\u00a0 There’s no MAP!<\/p>\n
Rhino stands for history.\u00c2\u00a0 If the act ever had a reputation, if anybody ever cared about them, if they sold any records, THEN they’re on Rhino.<\/p>\n
But you’d be stunned what’s on Rhino now.\u00c2\u00a0 LOGGINS & MESSINA!<\/p>\n
Every single album the duo cut was on Columbia.\u00c2\u00a0 How in the hell is it that they’ve now got a record on RHINO?<\/p>\n
My friend Lisa is the point person at Loggins’ management company and I STILL didn’t know the album was out.\u00c2\u00a0 Until I went to the Rhino homepage.<\/p>\n
The label heads don’t get it.\u00c2\u00a0 You’ve got to build culture.\u00c2\u00a0 Brand names now have to MEAN something.\u00c2\u00a0 Because of the cacophony in the marketplace.\u00c2\u00a0 Otherwise, the overwhelming plethora of product is too DAUNTING!<\/p>\n
Many analysts say Mercedes-Benz fucked up.\u00c2\u00a0 By trying to please everybody.\u00c2\u00a0 Have you seen that little Benz, the one that looks like a Toyota?\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, some wannabe twentysomething might lay down just shy of 30k to be a member of a club which…\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, who wants to spend nearly a 100k for an M-B if the idiot down the street drives a cheesy, cheaper version.<\/p>\n
BMW stands for performance.<\/p>\n
Lexus stands for fit and finish.<\/p>\n
Nonesuch…stands for quality.\u00c2\u00a0 The company just doesn’t have a big web presence.<\/p>\n
The point is, how can you make people aware of your product.<\/p>\n
There’s the endcap at Best Buy, but that’s only for label priorities.<\/p>\n
As for the indie record shop, most people don’t go there.\u00c2\u00a0 And it’s a schlep.<\/p>\n
The public demands filters.\u00c2\u00a0 They need the product sliced and diced.\u00c2\u00a0 Rhino is doing this.\u00c2\u00a0 Nobody else in the major label world is.\u00c2\u00a0 Trying to reach everybody, they’re turning off just about everybody.<\/p>\n
That’s why Victory works.\u00c2\u00a0 You know what the label STANDS for.<\/p>\n
Who even knows what Atlantic Records stands for anymore…<\/p>\n
\nIn the spirit of full disclosure, I’m paid by Rhino, to reuse some of my material and to do podcasts.\u00c2\u00a0 THAT’S why I went to the site and found out about the L&M disc.\u00c2\u00a0 But, I got e-mail this weekend that Rhino is now putting out the Nicolette Larson tribute concert.\u00c2\u00a0 That got me thinking.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve got to check out what Rhino’s putting out.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s not what I expect anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s not just WEA product.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
