Then as it was, then again it will be<\/em><\/p>\n

In February ’94, we all got together for Al’s fortieth birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 People I hadn’t seen in years.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Jimmy Kay.\u00c2\u00a0 Mini.\u00c2\u00a0 Guys I’d spent every day of my life with back in the spring of ’75, at Mammoth Mountain in California.\u00c2\u00a0 What stunned me was everybody agreed, it was the highlight of their life.<\/p>\n

It snowed 37" in Mammoth this past weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 And they needed it.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the driest season in years.\u00c2\u00a0 But I’m not going.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I’ve got a pass.\u00c2\u00a0 But I’m spending Christmas in Vail.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, if you’re going let me know!\u00c2\u00a0 Let’s hook up!<\/p>\n

And I’m forecasting quite a mighty time with Felice’s family.\u00c2\u00a0 But the spring is different.\u00c2\u00a0 Skiing without a cloud in the sky.\u00c2\u00a0 Sans long underwear.\u00c2\u00a0 In just a t-shirt.\u00c2\u00a0 Mammoth Mountain is the California dream.<\/p>\n

And the soundtrack to that month-long dream was "Physical Graffiti".\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, I thought I was over Zeppelin.\u00c2\u00a0 Didn’t need them.\u00c2\u00a0 But "Kashmir" got under my skin.\u00c2\u00a0 And I learned to love "Ten Years Gone".<\/p>\n

Now Zeppelin had a number of tracks that beat you over the head.\u00c2\u00a0 But, it’s the quiet, more ethereal tracks that are my favorites.\u00c2\u00a0 Stuff like "Dazed and Confused" from the very first record.\u00c2\u00a0 These songs didn’t penetrate you at first, but once they did, you couldn’t shake them, you had to hear them again and again and again.\u00c2\u00a0 They popped into your brain when you were ecstatic, when you were in trouble, they were your mental companions.\u00c2\u00a0 Still are.<\/p>\n

I believe the best guitarist of all time is Jeff Beck.\u00c2\u00a0 But Jeff is a player, whereas Jimmy Page is a writer.\u00c2\u00a0 How he came up with the intro to "Ten Years Gone" I’ll never know.\u00c2\u00a0 But I believe he was home, alone, and he started hitting the notes on his Les Paul, and came up with this.<\/p>\n
