{"id":2563,"date":"2010-01-15T16:01:07","date_gmt":"2010-01-16T00:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2563"},"modified":"2010-01-15T16:02:04","modified_gmt":"2010-01-16T00:02:04","slug":"quote-of-the-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/01\/15\/quote-of-the-day-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Quote Of The Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n&quot;Sometimes you want more for somebody than they want for themselves.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Herschel Walker&#8217;s mom<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Which way does Howard Stern want it?\u00c2\u00a0 Does he want the money or the reach?<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, he was busy citing the Arbitron report that claimed over 35 million people listened to satellite radio. <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"Arbitron: Over 35 million listeners tune into Sirius XM\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitcast.com\/archives\/arbitron-over-35-million-listeners-tune-into-sirius-xm.html\">Arbitron: Over 35 million listeners tune into Sirius XM<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, he told Herschel Walker that he understood why he went to play in the USFL, that his parents met picking cotton, he wanted the money.\u00c2\u00a0 Just like him, terrestrial radio didn&#8217;t pay anywhere near as well as satellite.<\/p>\n<p>The career of an athlete, especially a football player, is very brief.\u00c2\u00a0 Needing to earn enough dough for the rest of your life, you make decisions an attorney or a broadcaster might not.<\/p>\n<p>But when Herschel Walker&#8217;s playing days were through, he plowed three of the fifty million he&#8217;d been paid into a poultry business.\u00c2\u00a0 Which he now claims is worth two hundred mil.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty good.\u00c2\u00a0 An atypical story.<\/p>\n<p>But Herschel Walker was the valedictorian of his class.<\/p>\n<p>But what riveted me in the car was Herschel talking about hiring his entire family to work in his chicken business, then firing each and every one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Weren&#8217;t they pissed, Howard asked?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, no.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s when Herschel uttered his mother&#8217;s quote above.<\/p>\n<p>Boy, that explains it.<\/p>\n<p>Moms rarely make millions, but that doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;re not extremely wise.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, I&#8217;ve been unable to understand it.\u00c2\u00a0 How friends and family with incredible insight and talent have stalled out, how they&#8217;d rather watch TV or read books or talk about what coulda\/woulda\/shoulda happened if the breaks had just gone their way.<\/p>\n<p>The breaks rarely go your way.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to make your own luck.<\/p>\n<p>You can be the most talented musician in your neighborhood, but unless you&#8217;re willing to go to New York or L.A. and starve, trying to stay afloat in the big pool, or doing the same online, you&#8217;re just never going to make it.<\/p>\n<p>What holds people back?<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you&#8217;ve got to want it.\u00c2\u00a0 I always believed everybody wanted it, that they just got in the way of themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 But maybe, like Herschel&#8217;s mom says, they don&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re content where they are.<\/p>\n<p>Sad, but true.<\/p>\n<p>You offer them opportunities, but they decline.\u00c2\u00a0 You try to help them out, but they make excuses.\u00c2\u00a0 Life is such a struggle.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re not willing to fight, you&#8217;re not gonna get much.\u00c2\u00a0 Even if you&#8217;ve got a head start.\u00c2\u00a0 For all the children of famous people making a buck, oftentimes playing themselves, there are tons who have blown their inheritances on drugs, who are barely more than nonentities.<\/p>\n<p>Howard certainly is not a nonentity.\u00c2\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t understand his game.<\/p>\n<p>We tend not to revere those solely in it for the money, especially if they are artists.\u00c2\u00a0 It seems that they too want less for themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 Because money is just a statistic, it can&#8217;t buy you love, it can&#8217;t buy you happiness.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, the opposite is worse, being broke.\u00c2\u00a0 But at some point, how much cash do you need?<\/p>\n<p>Howard is triumphing on satellite radio, to the degree one can win in this limited pool, programming two of over a hundred channels, by selling the truth, the real story behind news and entertainment.\u00c2\u00a0 In a land of duplicitous &quot;stars&quot; and a fawning media, people are ravenous for the truth.\u00c2\u00a0 If Howard just wants to take his cash and stay where he&#8217;s at, he&#8217;s entitled.\u00c2\u00a0 Or else he and Sirius\/XM should try to grow his audience. Or Howard should jump to a medium where his brilliance can be reflected amongst the many.<\/p>\n<p>Howard&#8217;s the expert on late night TV, yet he&#8217;s not really playing in the arena himself.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re broadcasters.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s a niche player.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, if you check the ratings, there&#8217;s a chance Howard&#8217;s reaching nearly as many people as the late night jokesters.\u00c2\u00a0 The media is always at least a step behind.\u00c2\u00a0 Howard has always forced writers to pay attention to him, to catch up to him.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe I want more for Howard than he wants for himself.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&quot;Sometimes you want more for somebody than they want for themselves.&quot; Herschel Walker&#8217;s mom Which way does Howard Stern want it?\u00c2\u00a0 Does he want the money or the reach?
