{"id":2549,"date":"2010-01-12T08:21:21","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T16:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2549"},"modified":"2010-01-12T08:29:07","modified_gmt":"2010-01-12T16:29:07","slug":"merrimack-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2010\/01\/12\/merrimack-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Merrimack County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">In the town where I was raised<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The clock ticks and the cattle graze<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Time passed with amazing grace<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Back where I come from<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&quot;Back Where I Come From&quot;<br \/>Mac McAnally<\/p>\n<p>I got an e-mail from Scott Borchetta, proprietor of Big Machine and Valory Records, singing the praises of both his indie labels and one of his charges, Justin Moore.<\/p>\n<p>Telling me even Reba was on Twitter, Scott told me to check out Justin&#8217;s video blogs, &quot;his version of Cribs&quot;, that his fans loved him and &quot;this thing was growing exponentially in the real world&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>I clicked through to Justin&#8217;s video <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cbBtmNhNYW0\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Justin Moore \">Justin Moore &quot;My Crib&quot;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Wherein he appeared like a redneck, living in a crib that&#8230;wasn&#8217;t quite lousy enough to be a joke, but wasn&#8217;t quite good enough to be his real living quarters.\u00c2\u00a0 Wandering around the room in his overalls, I was struck by the difference between this video and the ones by the top forty wonders.\u00c2\u00a0 Justin was saying I&#8217;m just like you, a blue collar striver who&#8217;s never going to be on TMZ.<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought he was insulting his audience, but then I realized they were in on the joke.\u00c2\u00a0 That somehow Justin and his audience were in it together.<\/p>\n<p>Then he sang his song.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to 2:35.\u00c2\u00a0 Live and acoustic, Justin sings &quot;Small Town U.S.A.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Interesting that he could sing and play it, and that you could sing along to it.<\/p>\n<p>And I knew the track, not that I could have picked Justin out of a lineup previously, even knew he was the singer.\u00c2\u00a0 Every time I heard it on the radio I thought of Johnny Mellencamp.\u00c2\u00a0 Justin&#8217;s song was derivative.\u00c2\u00a0 But it captured the essence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">A lot of people called it prison when I was growin&#8217; up<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">But these are my roots and this is what I love<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8216;Cause everybody knows me and I know them<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m with Justin through here, but then he loses me:<br \/><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">As I believe that&#8217;s the way we were supposed to live<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Wouldn&#8217;t trade one single day here in small town USA<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t this remind you of Sarah Palin?\u00c2\u00a0 Speaking of &quot;real Americans&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 When did we all get so huffy, defending our roots.\u00c2\u00a0 We all come from somewhere, but isn&#8217;t it okay to strive to go somewhere else?\u00c2\u00a0 Even if we can never shake where we came from?<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of where I come from&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a fan of singer-songwriters, some who made it, some who never did.\u00c2\u00a0 And one who never did was Mac McAnally.\u00c2\u00a0 I love that Geffen album with the little boy and the airplane on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>But &quot;Back Where I Come From&quot; is from a later album.\u00c2\u00a0 You can hear it on Mac&#8217;s MySpace page: <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/macmcanally\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Mac McAnally\">Mac McAnally<\/a> (it&#8217;s the third song down).\u00c2\u00a0 <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the most famous version is by Kenny Chesney. That&#8217;s right, Mac might not be famous, but his songs are:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Now you can lie on a river bank<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Paint your name on a water tank<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Or miscount all the beers that you drank<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Back where I come from<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a slightly different sentiment, a different feel from Justin Moore&#8217;s track.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s no defiance.\u00c2\u00a0 Just an owning of one&#8217;s past.<\/p>\n<p>People want to deny where they came from in Hollywood, in the theoretical mainstream.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone&#8217;s been reinvented, gotten their lips plumped and their boobs inflated, who they used to be&#8230;they didn&#8217;t used to be anybody before this.<\/p>\n<p>But in country music where you came from is key.\u00c2\u00a0 It defines your values, who you are.\u00c2\u00a0 I love &quot;Back Where I Come From&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it contains the joy of the backwater almost all of us were raised in.\u00c2\u00a0 And it came to mind while I was playing &quot;Merrimack County&quot;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">When I was younger and in my schooling<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I walked the mountains made of stone<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The distance sang about tomorrow<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">And I did wish I was grown and gone<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Saturday night I went to see Tom Rush at Largo.\u00c2\u00a0 Normally, he plays McCabe&#8217;s, sells it out, he figured he&#8217;d take a risk, play a larger venue.\u00c2\u00a0 Only one problem, McCabe patrons follow the listings for the Santa Monica venue religiously, what happens somewhere else, across town on La Cienega, may as well be occurring in the Alps.\u00c2\u00a0 Getting the word out is almost impossible.\u00c2\u00a0 Be thankful anyone gets the message at all.<\/p>\n<p>So, when we arrived at the venue, it was not full.\u00c2\u00a0 And it was two songs in.\u00c2\u00a0 Tom had told us the show was called for 7:30 and he would go on at 8, we got there at 7:45 and he&#8217;d taken the stage earlier, there&#8217;d been a mix-up in the signals.<\/p>\n<p>And mix-ups like this always make you feel left out.\u00c2\u00a0 We were sitting in the back, but we might as well have been behind glass, until Tom started telling the story of meeting Joni Mitchell in Detroit and hearing &quot;Urge For Going&quot; for the very first time.\u00c2\u00a0 He recorded it, and played it on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>He also played &quot;These Days&quot; and &quot;Child&#8217;s Song&quot;, by Jackson Browne and Murray McLauchlan respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But what truly reached me was &quot;Merrimack County&quot;, a song I&#8217;m only vaguely familiar with.<\/p>\n<p>Tom&#8217;s from New Hampshire.\u00c2\u00a0 Which has got its own mentality.\u00c2\u00a0 Not as out there as Maine, but not as cosmopolitan as the lower New England states.<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire&#8217;s weird.\u00c2\u00a0 Unlike Vermont, it&#8217;s not mountainous throughout, the southern half is akin to Massachusetts, but it&#8217;s not, it&#8217;s removed.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s nothing like Fairfield, Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s snow.\u00c2\u00a0 And ice.\u00c2\u00a0 And loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s something that&#8217;s missing in Justin Moore&#8217;s song, Mac McAnally&#8217;s too.\u00c2\u00a0 The alienation.\u00c2\u00a0 That was a key element of the music of the late sixties and early seventies.\u00c2\u00a0 Before we were all networked, updated on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>We were out there alone.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still out there alone.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the music that means the most to me.\u00c2\u00a0 Not the Black Eyed Peas, not the party numbers, but the songs that speak to the human condition.<br \/><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Way up north by the icebound ocean<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I was born, I was born<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Way up north in the Merrimack County<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">That&#8217;s my home, that&#8217;s my home<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tom chased love to Wyoming.\u00c2\u00a0 But now he&#8217;s living back in the frozen north.\u00c2\u00a0 Technically Vermont, but he&#8217;s just over the border from Hanover, New Hampshire.\u00c2\u00a0 Because you can never leave your roots behind.<\/p>\n<p>Tom&#8217;s singing &quot;Merrimack County&quot; and my whole life is passing through my brain.\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not all sunny.\u00c2\u00a0 Torture at college in Vermont.\u00c2\u00a0 Alone in my bedroom in Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s where I come from.<\/p>\n<p>We all come from somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">So let the bird fly down the valley<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Let the storms roam on the sea<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I was born to the rainbow circle<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Stony mountain that&#8217;s home to me<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\nTo hear &quot;Merrimack County&quot;
