{"id":2361,"date":"2009-10-28T13:13:53","date_gmt":"2009-10-28T21:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2361"},"modified":"2009-10-28T13:13:53","modified_gmt":"2009-10-28T21:13:53","slug":"lala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/10\/28\/lala\/","title":{"rendered":"LaLa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten cents to own the right to a permanent stream at 32kbps within cell range on your iPhone?<\/p>\n<p>Why don&#8217;t you charge me a nickel to see one hazy picture of a porn star clothed?<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got to get over this per track nonsense.\u00c2\u00a0 The money is in the bundle.\u00c2\u00a0 Otherwise, HBO would let you buy &quot;Curb Your Enthusiasm&quot; by the episode instead of forcing you to subscribe to 24\/7 service.<\/p>\n<p>Just because in past history people bought by the track, do we have to use this paradigm in the future?\u00c2\u00a0 Shit, ask a kid about long distance telephone charges.\u00c2\u00a0 My dad would freak, DON&#8217;T CALL LONG DISTANCE!\u00c2\u00a0 But on today&#8217;s cell phones, long distance is FREE!\u00c2\u00a0 And speaking of cell phones, they don&#8217;t charge you by the call, they sell you buckets of minutes.\u00c2\u00a0 And for the heavy consumer, there are all you can eat plans.\u00c2\u00a0 But in the music business, we&#8217;re doing backflips about the ability to rent one shitty track at a time?<\/p>\n<p>You want people to make one big decision.\u00c2\u00a0 To subscribe to music!\u00c2\u00a0 To get everything!<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the Spotify plan, the MOG plan, the Rhapsody and Napster plan.<\/p>\n<p>And credit Spotify and Rhapsody for knowing it&#8217;s about portability.\u00c2\u00a0 Check landline profitability recently?\u00c2\u00a0 People are disconnecting, you don&#8217;t need a wired phone.\u00c2\u00a0 You want to be free and easy on the cell.\u00c2\u00a0 Just like you want your music everywhere.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s now the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>And no hard drive yet available can hold the history of recorded music.\u00c2\u00a0 Ditto on flash memory.\u00c2\u00a0 So, it&#8217;s about being able to hear what you want when you want.<\/p>\n<p>The iTunes Store is a stopgap measure, a bridge between old and new, a way to legitimize the chaos.\u00c2\u00a0 But if you think people are going to be buying by track in the future, you purchase one egg at a time, you record every TV show to VHS tape, hoarding episodes clueless that there&#8217;s something called Hulu.<\/p>\n<p>Music should be like water.\u00c2\u00a0 You turn it on, you expect it to be there.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody has access, you don&#8217;t hoard it, and you pay very little for it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, you can buy bottled water, but that&#8217;s like going to the concert.\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t go to see everybody you listen to, not if you&#8217;re an avid music fan, but you still want to check things out, listen to new favorites.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got a switch to an attention economy.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, rights holders should be paid.<\/p>\n<p>But individual acts should be worried less about being paid than whether they&#8217;re being listened to!<\/p>\n<p>Spotify Premium allows you to permanently store in excess of 3,000 tracks on your iPhone.\u00c2\u00a0 So if you&#8217;re out of range, or you&#8217;re bounced by AT&amp;T&#8217;s shitty service, you can still listen.<\/p>\n<p>Haven&#8217;t we come up with enough concepts that please rights holders that the public doesn&#8217;t find interesting?\u00c2\u00a0 Look to Sony, they SPECIALIZE IN THIS!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten cents to own the right to a permanent stream at 32kbps within cell range on your iPhone?
