{"id":2326,"date":"2009-10-15T12:33:09","date_gmt":"2009-10-15T20:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2326"},"modified":"2009-10-15T12:33:09","modified_gmt":"2009-10-15T20:33:09","slug":"all-for-the-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/10\/15\/all-for-the-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"All For The Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">WHO WOULDN&#8217;T WANNA BE ME<\/span><br \/><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The sun is shinin&#8217;<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">This road keeps windin&#8217;<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Through the prettiest country<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">From Georgia to Tennessee<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I got the one I love beside me<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">My troubles behind me<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I&#8217;m alive and I&#8217;m free<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Who wouldn&#8217;t wanna be me<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yup, inside the Sommet Center for Keith Urban&#8217;s &quot;All For The Hall&quot; concert.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t been to Nashville, you haven&#8217;t been to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.\u00c2\u00a0 And you&#8217;re the worse for it.\u00c2\u00a0 You might think you don&#8217;t care about shitkickers, but you&#8217;re missing out on the history of America.\u00c2\u00a0 From slaves to the Dust Bowl to Elvis Presley&#8217;s solid gold Cadillac and the history\/tragedy of the Williams family.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s jaw-dropping.\u00c2\u00a0 To see the old footage of people fiddlin&#8217; and dancin&#8217;.\u00c2\u00a0 Watching Jimmie Rodgers sing you become an instant believer.\u00c2\u00a0 But what enamored me most was the video of Wanda Jackson.\u00c2\u00a0 Exhume her and put her on the road today.\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;d be bigger than all of the wannabes.\u00c2\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t need no Timbaland, just her pipes.\u00c2\u00a0 She shimmied and shook, singing this music halfway between country and rock.\u00c2\u00a0 To go to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is to become a fan.<\/p>\n<p>And to insure that it lives on, can expand, do its mission properly, Vince Gill proposed every artist cough up one night of revenue for the Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Keith Urban took him up on it.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Tuesday night at the Sommet Center, the Staples Center of Nashville, the Madison Square Garden of Music City, albeit with much worse food, some of country music&#8217;s finest came out to raise money for the Hall.\u00c2\u00a0 Keith, Vince and all the people who&#8217;d opened for Keith over the past years.<\/p>\n<p>The show started with over an hour of Keith&#8217;s hits.\u00c2\u00a0 Performed by him and his band of crack guitarists.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, they&#8217;re an army, a coalition that could triumph over any adversary merely with sound.\u00c2\u00a0 Keith Urban played the incredible solo at the end of &quot;Stupid Girl&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 He sat down alone and performed his roots music, Dolly Parton&#8217;s &quot;Coat Of Many Colors&quot; on his acoustic.\u00c2\u00a0 And he and his band played my favorite song, &quot;Who Wouldn&#8217;t Wanna Be Me&quot;.<br \/><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I got no money in my pockets<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I got a hole in my jeans<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I had a job and I lost it<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">But it won&#8217;t get to me<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the power of music.\u00c2\u00a0 It crowds out all the negativity, it replaces the bad thoughts with joy and inspiration.\u00c2\u00a0 And when you hear Keith Urban wail on his guitar, you get the same feeling you do when Derek Trucks or Warren Haynes or even Jeff Beck pick out the notes.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not some hack, playing crap.\u00c2\u00a0 Keith Urban can play!\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, that&#8217;s the Nashville mantra.\u00c2\u00a0 Go to see one of these acts.\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t believe there are no hard drives.<\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: bold;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BRAD PAISLEY<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve O.D.&#8217;ed on his sophomoric lyrics, and I believe his joint song with Keith Urban, &quot;Start A Band&quot;, is a bit lame.\u00c2\u00a0 But you should hear him wail!<\/p>\n<p>Brad and Keith eventually journeyed into the audience, on separate sides of the arena, shredding all the time.\u00c2\u00a0 They were exhausted after minutes of picking, it was hard to believe they could go on.<\/p>\n<p>And you wonder why people are country fans.<\/p>\n<p>This ain&#8217;t canned music made to get laid.\u00c2\u00a0 Not background stuff in a bar.\u00c2\u00a0 This is positively foreground, it picks you up and energizes you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">VINCE GILL<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Positively staggering.\u00c2\u00a0 A revelation.\u00c2\u00a0 I knew he could sing, but who knew he could pick?<\/p>\n<p>He started off with Pure Prairie League.\u00c2\u00a0 Then, I lost track.\u00c2\u00a0 Not completely, but he was off in this country world, before country became the new rock and we all gravitated there.<\/p>\n<p>You might think he&#8217;s a crooner, but he could hold his own with any rock band out there.\u00c2\u00a0 Even Metallica!<\/p>\n<p>And after pointing out his wife, Amy Grant, he sang a sweet love song that converted you.\u00c2\u00a0 (After saying he hadn&#8217;t seen her for two and a half weeks and hoped to get lucky tonight!\u00c2\u00a0 There may be too much religion in country music, but that doesn&#8217;t mean there&#8217;s not any SEX!)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">LITTLE BIG TOWN<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I feel no shame<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I&#8217;m proud of where I came from<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I was born and raised in the boondocks<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Can&#8217;t say that&#8217;s where I&#8217;m from.\u00c2\u00a0 But I loved that Billy Joe Royal song, does that count?<\/p>\n<p>They started off with &quot;Fine Line&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 I would have done something different from the third album, but then they lit into this hit from the breakthrough record.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s where I learned about living<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s where I learned about love<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s where I learned this wasn&#8217;t my father&#8217;s country music.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;Boondocks&quot; resembles nothing so much as a Fleetwood Mac number.\u00c2\u00a0 But with one difference.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s better than anything that concoction has done in thirty years!<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know the joy of Little Big Town, I feel sorry for you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">FREE AND EASY DOWN THE ROAD I GO<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve heard any song more on country radio.<\/p>\n<p>This Dierks Bentley number bridges the old and new, the ancient and the modern.\u00c2\u00a0 Harkens back to the country of yore, yet is still fresh and exuberant enough to sound modern.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">LADY ANTEBELLUM\/JASON ALDEAN\/FAITH HILL<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They all triumphed.<\/p>\n<p>But the show was stolen by someone much younger.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone still wet behind the ears, but wise beyond her years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">TAYLOR SWIFT<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">You take a deep breath and you walk through the doors<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s the morning of your very first day<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Do you remember the first day of high school?<\/p>\n<p>You thought for days what you were going to wear.\u00c2\u00a0 You walked into the building minding your cool.\u00c2\u00a0 This counted. You had to get it right, you didn&#8217;t want to ruin your reputation.\u00c2\u00a0 Not for the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Swift walked on stage in a glittery silver dress and a guitar strung around her neck.\u00c2\u00a0 The applause, the screams were DEAFENING!<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been at a show and been completely exhilarated, knowing that you were at the exact center of the universe, ground zero of the human experience?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where we were Tuesday night, all 18,000 of us, when Taylor Swift performed.<\/p>\n<p>Not reading from a script, intelligent and schooled, Taylor started riffing.\u00c2\u00a0 After basking in the adulation she said what she loved about country music is that everybody got to tell their story.\u00c2\u00a0 And this was hers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It&#8217;s your freshman year and you&#8217;re gonna be here<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">For the next four years in this town<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Hoping one of those senior boys will wink at you and say?<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8216;You know, I haven&#8217;t seen you around before&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Life.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s full of hopes and dreams.\u00c2\u00a0 And victories and losses.\u00c2\u00a0 What gets you through is your friends and the music.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the power of music.\u00c2\u00a0 When done right.\u00c2\u00a0 Too often it&#8217;s done wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s done for corporations.\u00c2\u00a0 For old men in suits.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s streamlined for radio.\u00c2\u00a0 Made inauthentic in order to sell not only itself, but associated products.\u00c2\u00a0 To the point where when you hear something genuine, you exult EUREKA!<\/p>\n<p>I could analyze the changes, the lyrics.\u00c2\u00a0 Deconstruct the song.\u00c2\u00a0 But that would be missing the point.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s the total effect.\u00c2\u00a0 Of a gawky, geeky girl who made it through.\u00c2\u00a0 To womanhood.<\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that the goal?\u00c2\u00a0 To not drop out?\u00c2\u00a0 To not commit suicide?\u00c2\u00a0 To get to the point where you can call your own shots?<br \/><br style=\"font-style: italic;\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I didn&#8217;t know who I was supposed to be at fifteen<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know who I&#8217;m supposed to be at fifty.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t own a home.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got no children.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m gonna have to work for the rest of my life just to pay the bills.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the line, I diverged.\u00c2\u00a0 And when I finally realized that we were on different paths, there was no going back.\u00c2\u00a0 I was stuck, out here, alone.\u00c2\u00a0 Just me and the music.<\/p>\n<p>But the music&#8217;s been failing me.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen the Who perform &quot;Tommy&quot; at the Fillmore.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen Prince blow away the few in attendance at Flippers roller disco, performing &quot;Dirty Mind&quot; the night of the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen music become about looks more than sound, I&#8217;ve seen music become a sideshow, something that makes people rich, but leaves the audience starving, turning to television and the Internet for fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p>And then I discovered Taylor Swift.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone who knows it&#8217;s about songs, not stardom.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone willing to keep ticket prices cheap so her young fans have a chance to see her.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone who&#8217;s got the ethos of a star from way back when, as opposed to the sold out creeps who tramp about today.<\/p>\n<p>Music when done right is life itself.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to Taylor Swift Tuesday night, tears came streaming down my face.\u00c2\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t stop them.\u00c2\u00a0 On one hand, I was embarrassed.\u00c2\u00a0 On the other I was thrilled.\u00c2\u00a0 Just when I&#8217;d given up, believing that everything I&#8217;d experienced previously had gone, here it was, back.<\/p>\n<p>That rush of going to the show, feeling that there was no place I&#8217;d rather be.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t care if you like the music.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t give a shit if you go to see her.\u00c2\u00a0 But I want to be very clear.\u00c2\u00a0 Taylor Swift is a SUPERSTAR!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHO WOULDN&#8217;T WANNA BE METhe sun is shinin&#8217;This road keeps windin&#8217;Through the prettiest countryFrom Georgia to TennesseeI got the one I love beside meMy troubles behind meI&#8217;m alive and I&#8217;m freeWho wouldn&#8217;t wanna be me Yup, inside the Sommet Center for Keith Urban&#8217;s &quot;All For The Hall&quot; concert.
