{"id":2267,"date":"2009-09-22T14:12:59","date_gmt":"2009-09-22T22:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2267"},"modified":"2009-09-22T14:12:59","modified_gmt":"2009-09-22T22:12:59","slug":"live-nation-club-passport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/09\/22\/live-nation-club-passport\/","title":{"rendered":"Live Nation-Club Passport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s too complicated.<\/p>\n<p>To endorse Club Passport would be equivalent to giving a thumbs-up to Microsoft&#8217;s Zune.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, Zune HD is a good attempt, but it&#8217;s not going to succeed because it&#8217;s not what the people want!<\/p>\n<p>A season pass?\u00c2\u00a0 Great idea.\u00c2\u00a0 We discussed it in Aspen, Don Strasburg immediately sold some in Boulder.\u00c2\u00a0 But in order to work, it must be understandable, comprehensible, clear.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the number one criterion for business success.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not about having the most, but having the most usable.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of offering the right to see a bunch of unknown shows, why not just sell out current inventory cheaply?\u00c2\u00a0 Loser shows are obvious, especially when those are the only ones you can get in for free with your passport.\u00c2\u00a0 This is lipstick on a pig, and that&#8217;s never attractive.\u00c2\u00a0 If you want to employ a season pass, you&#8217;ve got to start with a clean slate.<\/p>\n<p>You pay $49 and you&#8217;ve got the right to get in every Monday night.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you want to insure you get in, you&#8217;ve got to line up.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s how you build confidence in the customer and generate excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you&#8217;re gonna have developing acts on most Mondays.\u00c2\u00a0 But every once in a while, you&#8217;re gonna have a special star.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes announced, sometimes unannounced.\u00c2\u00a0 $49 gives you the right to get in.\u00c2\u00a0 And, it&#8217;s the ONLY way to get in.\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t buy a regular ticket.<\/p>\n<p>And for those bitching that they may not get into any shows, you give merchandise\/value equivalent to the $49.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, buy a passport and you get to join one fan club of your choice.\u00c2\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t advertise specific rights that go along with this, but in the hype you can delineate all the advantages \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009d special merch, right to buy tickets in advance.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, Musictoday&#8217;s fan clubs are the best, Live Nation owns the company, why not let people experience the quality by joining?<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s a limited number of passports, generating heat, desirability, and a good chance of getting in.\u00c2\u00a0 If it&#8217;s really successful, sell for Tuesday night too.\u00c2\u00a0 And then Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>And you need your credit card to get in, this helps fight scalping.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, your name is printed right on your laminate (yup, you get a laminate, not a paper ticket \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009d hell, put a photo on it to truly avoid scalping issues!)<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s a Club Passport page where you can upload pics, where you can tweet, post in the forum&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Truly make it a club.\u00c2\u00a0 And everybody wants to be a member of a cool club.<\/p>\n<p>Make it simple.\u00c2\u00a0 The fewer rules, the better.<\/p>\n<p>And make it look like Live Nation and the customer are in it together.<\/p>\n<p>Good intentions here, but bad execution.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s too complicated.
