{"id":211,"date":"2005-11-02T20:34:57","date_gmt":"2005-11-03T03:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/11\/02\/re-nickelback\/"},"modified":"2005-11-03T10:49:27","modified_gmt":"2005-11-03T17:49:27","slug":"re-nickelback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/11\/02\/re-nickelback\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Nickelback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the twenty first century I was on the phone with Eddie Rosenblatt, <br \/>President of Geffen Records.\u00c2\u00a0 We were discussing a band and he asked me <br \/>what was the PERCEPTION of the act.\u00c2\u00a0 He said that&#8217;s what truly matters, <br \/>not the statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Perception is Nickelback is a joke.\u00c2\u00a0 And that perception was built on the <br \/>Web.\u00c2\u00a0 If you didn&#8217;t get e-mailed that MP3 wherein the band&#8217;s two big sound-alike <br \/>hits were cut together to make one you&#8217;re so far out of the loop you should <br \/>focus on making new friends.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the Nickelback album BEFORE the one with &quot;This Is How You Remind Me&quot;, <br \/>and I told Derek Shulman, then running Roadrunner, so.<\/p>\n<p>I think &quot;This Is How You Remind Me&quot; is a FANTASTIC track.\u00c2\u00a0 That, ironically, <br \/>I can still listen to today.<\/p>\n<p>But then they followed up this phenomenal track with one that sounded just <br \/>like it.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the measure of true artistry.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether you&#8217;ve got enough <br \/>self-confidence to continue to explore, rather than cave to market demands <br \/>and deliver what&#8217;s expected of you.<\/p>\n<p>Nickelback does not get to rewrite history.\u00c2\u00a0 Does not get to say we did one <br \/>for them, now we&#8217;re doing one for us.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the MOVIE business, not the MUSIC <br \/>business.\u00c2\u00a0 Movies are mega-expensive, music is cheap.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s the MARKETING <br \/>that&#8217;s expensive.\u00c2\u00a0 But does it have to be this way?<\/p>\n<p>Sheryl Crow is blabbing in every interview how her last album made her feel <br \/>dirty, that she delivered what THEY wanted and then depressed decided to make <br \/>THIS record.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s like me saying I&#8217;ve made a deal to write for <br \/>hitsdailydouble, and then, after pocketing the check, and we know this isn&#8217;t a good <br \/>example, since &quot;Hits&quot; pays so poorly, going indie again and telling you to believe in <br \/>me once more.\u00c2\u00a0 No, I&#8217;d be forever labeled a sell-out.<\/p>\n<p>I like the guys below.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re just doing their jobs. But they&#8217;re myopic.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>They&#8217;re out of touch with the street.\u00c2\u00a0 Even if Nickelback is SELLING records <br \/>most people see them as a one trick pony.<\/p>\n<p>So, let this be a warning.\u00c2\u00a0 Protect your image, that&#8217;s all you&#8217;ve got.<br \/>Which, is why, if you whore yourself out for a commercial, we can never <br \/>believe in you again (except maybe for Snoop, he seems to get away with it, he <br \/>seems to be laughing how he&#8217;s ripping off the man as he&#8217;s pitching the product).<\/p>\n<p>So, cite all the numbers you want.\u00c2\u00a0 On the street, Nickelback is done.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe <br \/>if they make a FEW more good CDs.\u00c2\u00a0 And in interviews reveal their souls.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>THEN, maybe people will be interested again.<br \/>But now they&#8217;re looking for something new.<\/p>\n<p>Ever notice how acts no longer have a career anymore?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s because they&#8217;re no longer artists, they&#8217;re BUSINESSMEN!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the twenty first century I was on the phone with Eddie Rosenblatt, President of Geffen Records.\u00c2\u00a0 We were discussing a band and he asked me what was the PERCEPTION of the act.\u00c2\u00a0 He said that&#8217;s what truly matters, not the statistics.
