Destiny&#8217;s Child &quot;#1&#8217;s&quot;<\/strong><br \/>Sony<\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 113,561<br \/>Debut<\/p>\n<p>Just for the record, what format were these 16 tracks number 1 on?\u00c2\u00a0 The <br \/>fantasy chart of Charlie Walk?<\/p>\n<p>This is a piss-poor number for an act trumpeted as the biggest selling female <br \/>group of all time.\u00c2\u00a0 Between this farce and Mariah Carey&#8217;s statistics real <br \/>acts like Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin are rolling over in their graves and <br \/>telling Joni Mitchell the news.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the overhype, I&#8217;d expect Beyonce&#8217;s solo career to follow the arc of <br \/>Whitney Houston&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 As in, one day everybody will look at each other, wonder <br \/>what they ever saw in her, and her sales will take a dive.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>As for this being a catalog item&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 God, if you can only sell 100,000 <br \/>records in one week most people have ALREADY forgotten you!<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p><strong>2. The system isn&#8217;t BUILT for a <br \/>Sheryl Crow.\u00c2\u00a0 It wants HITS, not meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of playing the game Sheryl should have used her position as the most <br \/>well-known and credible female rocker to rail against the system.\u00c2\u00a0 She should <br \/>have given away MP3s of the songs on her Website.\u00c2\u00a0 Gotten creaky baby boomers <br \/>to sign up to be her street team, offering cycling lessons with Lance as a <br \/>reward.\u00c2\u00a0 But rather than confront the reality of the situation head-on, Sheryl is <br \/>just sheepishly playing along.\u00c2\u00a0 To seemingly no effect.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p><strong>20. Depeche Mode &quot;Playing The Angel&quot;<\/strong><br \/>Reprise<\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 34,745<br \/>Percentage change: -67%<\/p>\n<p>Bono could take a lesson from Depeche Mode.\u00c2\u00a0 That it&#8217;s all about your base.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>That to play to the casual fan is only to ALIENATE your base. All that <br \/>marketing, the iPod, &quot;Entourage&quot;, it didn&#8217;t sell many more records of an act that <br \/>can&#8217;t get on Top Forty radio ANYWAY!\u00c2\u00a0 And, the gigs were sold out, so WHO CARES?<\/p>\n<p>And Depeche Mode sells out.\u00c2\u00a0 INSTANTLY!<\/p>\n<p>Go to a Depeche Mode gig and you won&#8217;t see casual punters coming in late <br \/>talking on their cell phones just to be able to tell all their co-workers they <br \/>were there.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, you&#8217;ll be confronted with fans and fans only.\u00c2\u00a0 Having an <br \/>experience OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM!\u00c2\u00a0 Experiencing what they consider to be the Holy <br \/>Grail.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know about you, but I don&#8217;t want to pray with non-believers.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Depeche Mode is on a tour of religion.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t believe, FUCK YOU!<\/p>\n<p>In other words, don&#8217;t judge this act by the sales of this new record.\u00c2\u00a0 Fans <br \/>will buy it if they hear from fellow fans that it&#8217;s good.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s only about the <br \/>fans.\u00c2\u00a0 And, really, it&#8217;s just about the tour.\u00c2\u00a0 And, I hate to tell you, but <br \/>it&#8217;s just about the tour with U2 too.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p><strong>24.
