{"id":2065,"date":"2009-06-29T17:15:22","date_gmt":"2009-06-30T01:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2065"},"modified":"2009-06-29T17:15:22","modified_gmt":"2009-06-30T01:15:22","slug":"phoenix-at-the-wiltern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/29\/phoenix-at-the-wiltern\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix At The Wiltern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why was everybody there?<\/p>\n<p>I e-mailed Stacey to park beneath the building and she said:<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#8217;m glad you already have tickets, because this show is totally sold out.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Huh?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Glass told me it was a tight ticket, but he owns the label.\u00c2\u00a0 What was bringing 2,000 plus people out on a Sunday night?<\/p>\n<p>Was it SNL?<\/p>\n<p>Sure, that was a plum gig in the last century, but TV can&#8217;t break a band today (other than the Disney Channel, but the Jonas Brothers are already fading, yet it&#8217;s still a viable outlet for girl singers).\u00c2\u00a0 And so many of the people on that Saturday late night show can&#8217;t sell a ticket.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s the epitome of hype.\u00c2\u00a0 Hey, look at me!\u00c2\u00a0 My label squeezed somebody powerful and now I&#8217;ve got a moment of fame before I go back to my day job!<\/p>\n<p>But supposedly it was different with Phoenix, SNL chased them.<\/p>\n<p>Still&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not like they&#8217;ve got a ubiquitous radio hit.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not like they&#8217;ve been the beneficiaries of saturation ink.<\/p>\n<p>They haven&#8217;t been jammed down our throats.\u00c2\u00a0 How can they be so successful?<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that they&#8217;re real?\u00c2\u00a0 That they don&#8217;t dance, don&#8217;t rely on backup tapes?<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that in a beat-driven commercial world they&#8217;re a great alternative?<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that after four albums, enough people know about them?<\/p>\n<p>Or, could it be that after four albums they&#8217;re finally that good?<\/p>\n<p>The word is definitely out.<\/p>\n<p>And those in attendance were not checking the band out.\u00c2\u00a0 They were singing along.\u00c2\u00a0 They knew the music.<\/p>\n<p>There was a pulse.\u00c2\u00a0 That was absent from SNL.\u00c2\u00a0 You see the sterility of a television studio robs rock of its essence, its sweaty all in it together vibe.\u00c2\u00a0 But live!<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix kept the energy high.\u00c2\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t do anything downtempo for forty minutes, and that number was not a dirge.\u00c2\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t speak, didn&#8217;t break up the music with patter. They let the sound speak for them.\u00c2\u00a0 Along with the lights!<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d think we were in the seventies.\u00c2\u00a0 Or maybe the sixties.\u00c2\u00a0 When only insiders knew, but there were a ton of insiders, all primed for the gig, not giving a shit that the mainstream isn&#8217;t clued in.<\/p>\n<p>I asked each person I came in contact with.\u00c2\u00a0 Why was everybody there?<\/p>\n<p>No one came up with a magic bullet.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure that Phoenix is the next superstar act, but they&#8217;re a bright light, a harbinger for the future.\u00c2\u00a0 Bottom line, if you make good music, people find out!\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t market via social media that which isn&#8217;t good, that which people don&#8217;t want.\u00c2\u00a0 But if you&#8217;ve got a touch of quality, word spreads like wildfire!<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">Lefsetz: At the Phoenix show at the Wiltern.
