{"id":203,"date":"2005-10-26T18:48:11","date_gmt":"2005-10-27T01:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/10\/26\/trey\/"},"modified":"2005-10-26T18:48:11","modified_gmt":"2005-10-27T01:48:11","slug":"trey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2005\/10\/26\/trey\/","title":{"rendered":"Trey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why the fuck is Trey Anastasio&#8217;s new album on Columbia?\u00c2\u00a0 If this isn&#8217;t a <br \/>record crying out for independent release, what is?\u00c2\u00a0 I always thought his manager, <br \/>Coran Capshaw, was brilliant, but I&#8217;m going to need an explanation on this <br \/>one.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe Trey should have called Howard Kaufman, and put out the record <br \/>through his network.\u00c2\u00a0 Making three to four times the revenue on each disc sold.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Jimmy Buffett only went to the Universal empire when he wanted to have a HIT!\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>When he needed that infrastructure.\u00c2\u00a0 What the fuck is Columbia going to do for <br \/>Trey that&#8217;s worth leaving all that money on the table?<\/p>\n<p>Oh, maybe Trey&#8217;s delusional.\u00c2\u00a0 He thinks he&#8217;s actually going to have a hit.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, right.\u00c2\u00a0 As if a decade plus of history hasn&#8217;t disproved THAT theory.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>And where exactly does Mr. Anastasio plan to HAVE that hit?\u00c2\u00a0 Top Forty?\u00c2\u00a0 Unless <br \/>he&#8217;s going to get Jay-Z to rap on his record, that&#8217;s never going to happen.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>And it&#8217;s not like his music is Active Rock friendly.\u00c2\u00a0 And AAA is a marginal <br \/>format that can&#8217;t sell tonnage.<\/p>\n<p>The only people interested in buying &quot;Shine&quot; are fans.\u00c2\u00a0 And based on the tour <br \/>numbers Trey&#8217;s putting up, that&#8217;s a dwindling base.\u00c2\u00a0 Because Phishheads <br \/>perceive that Trey broke up the band on a whim.\u00c2\u00a0 That it was presented as a group <br \/>decision, but really wasn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 And they&#8217;re unhappy about it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, the main <br \/>creative force remains, but the CULTURE is gone.\u00c2\u00a0 Never underestimate the value <br \/>of culture.\u00c2\u00a0 God, Mick Jagger could never have a solo hit.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, Phil Collins was more successful than Genesis.\u00c2\u00a0 And Sting has <br \/>done quite well without the Police.\u00c2\u00a0 But their careers were sustained on HIT <br \/>SINGLES!<\/p>\n<p>I say bring the old team back.\u00c2\u00a0 Which Trey will eventually do anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 Once <br \/>he finds out that people aren&#8217;t interested in his solo works, just the brand.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Own it.\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t get everything you want in life.\u00c2\u00a0 Beef up the original <br \/>band.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Talking Heads.\u00c2\u00a0 Add players, work within the confines of the <br \/>structure.\u00c2\u00a0 Or end up David Byrne.\u00c2\u00a0 A footnote in history and completely irrelevant <br \/>today.<\/p>\n<p>Why do acts have no balls.\u00c2\u00a0 Why can&#8217;t they stand up to the system.\u00c2\u00a0 Are they <br \/>getting bad advice, or just that dumb.\u00c2\u00a0 Or just that afraid.\u00c2\u00a0 God, they take <br \/>risks with their music but when it comes to business, political views, they put <br \/>up their hands and say no.\u00c2\u00a0 They don&#8217;t want to stick out from the crowd.\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/>Don&#8217;t want to hurt their image.\u00c2\u00a0 When their success is BASED on putting forth <br \/>their ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 Makes no sense!<\/p>\n<p>Then again, maybe Trey knows his solo career is going to be a failure.\u00c2\u00a0 And <br \/>he likes the Columbia advance.\u00c2\u00a0 That would be kind of sad, but he wouldn&#8217;t be <br \/>the first money-grubbing &quot;artist&quot;
