Why the fuck is Trey Anastasio’s new album on Columbia?\u00c2\u00a0 If this isn’t a
record crying out for independent release, what is?\u00c2\u00a0 I always thought his manager,
Coran Capshaw, was brilliant, but I’m going to need an explanation on this
one.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe Trey should have called Howard Kaufman, and put out the record
through his network.\u00c2\u00a0 Making three to four times the revenue on each disc sold.\u00c2\u00a0
Jimmy Buffett only went to the Universal empire when he wanted to have a HIT!\u00c2\u00a0
When he needed that infrastructure.\u00c2\u00a0 What the fuck is Columbia going to do for
Trey that’s worth leaving all that money on the table?<\/p>\n
Oh, maybe Trey’s delusional.\u00c2\u00a0 He thinks he’s actually going to have a hit.<\/p>\n
Yeah, right.\u00c2\u00a0 As if a decade plus of history hasn’t disproved THAT theory.\u00c2\u00a0
And where exactly does Mr. Anastasio plan to HAVE that hit?\u00c2\u00a0 Top Forty?\u00c2\u00a0 Unless
he’s going to get Jay-Z to rap on his record, that’s never going to happen.\u00c2\u00a0
And it’s not like his music is Active Rock friendly.\u00c2\u00a0 And AAA is a marginal
format that can’t sell tonnage.<\/p>\n
The only people interested in buying "Shine" are fans.\u00c2\u00a0 And based on the tour
numbers Trey’s putting up, that’s a dwindling base.\u00c2\u00a0 Because Phishheads
perceive that Trey broke up the band on a whim.\u00c2\u00a0 That it was presented as a group
decision, but really wasn’t.\u00c2\u00a0 And they’re unhappy about it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, the main
creative force remains, but the CULTURE is gone.\u00c2\u00a0 Never underestimate the value
of culture.\u00c2\u00a0 God, Mick Jagger could never have a solo hit.<\/p>\n
Then again, Phil Collins was more successful than Genesis.\u00c2\u00a0 And Sting has
done quite well without the Police.\u00c2\u00a0 But their careers were sustained on HIT
SINGLES!<\/p>\n
I say bring the old team back.\u00c2\u00a0 Which Trey will eventually do anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 Once
he finds out that people aren’t interested in his solo works, just the brand.\u00c2\u00a0
Own it.\u00c2\u00a0 You don’t get everything you want in life.\u00c2\u00a0 Beef up the original
band.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Talking Heads.\u00c2\u00a0 Add players, work within the confines of the
structure.\u00c2\u00a0 Or end up David Byrne.\u00c2\u00a0 A footnote in history and completely irrelevant
today.<\/p>\n
Why do acts have no balls.\u00c2\u00a0 Why can’t they stand up to the system.\u00c2\u00a0 Are they
getting bad advice, or just that dumb.\u00c2\u00a0 Or just that afraid.\u00c2\u00a0 God, they take
risks with their music but when it comes to business, political views, they put
up their hands and say no.\u00c2\u00a0 They don’t want to stick out from the crowd.\u00c2\u00a0
Don’t want to hurt their image.\u00c2\u00a0 When their success is BASED on putting forth
their ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 Makes no sense!<\/p>\n
Then again, maybe Trey knows his solo career is going to be a failure.\u00c2\u00a0 And
he likes the Columbia advance.\u00c2\u00a0 That would be kind of sad, but he wouldn’t be
the first money-grubbing "artist" out there, primarily interested in being paid.<\/p>\n
But Phish were different.\u00c2\u00a0 Phish was establishing a new culture.\u00c2\u00a0 Of bands
playing MUSIC!\u00c2\u00a0 With their careers built on the road.\u00c2\u00a0 God, Phish NEVER sold
tonnage.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though they tried.\u00c2\u00a0 God, you’d figure Trey would be happy that his
deal was over with Elektra.\u00c2\u00a0 So he could take ALL the money.\u00c2\u00a0 But no, he just
goes and makes another deal with the man.<\/p>\n
My understanding is Dave Matthews re-upped with RCA because they gave him his
masters back.\u00c2\u00a0 Columbia can do no such thing for Trey Anastasio.\u00c2\u00a0 So what’s
the deal?<\/p>\n
Believe in yourself Trey.\u00c2\u00a0 Be the guiding light for musicianship.\u00c2\u00a0 Show us a
new way.\u00c2\u00a0 To build an independent enterprise outside the corrupt major system.
\u00c2\u00a0This is who we thought you were.\u00c2\u00a0 We were wrong.<\/p>\n
