{"id":2003,"date":"2009-06-05T07:14:41","date_gmt":"2009-06-05T15:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2003"},"modified":"2009-06-05T07:14:41","modified_gmt":"2009-06-05T15:14:41","slug":"saving-satellite-radio-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/05\/saving-satellite-radio-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving Satellite Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It needs to be a tribe.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of running Oprah&#8217;s new TV network, Tom Freston should be in charge of resuscitating Sirius XM.\u00c2\u00a0 Because he was there when MTV blew up as a result of the &quot;I Want My MTV!&quot; campaign!<\/p>\n<p>FM radio was biggest when it was a club.\u00c2\u00a0 The station filled all your needs.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only\u00c2\u00a0 musical, but informational too.\u00c2\u00a0 The deejay was the ringleader, the news was alternative, it felt like being in a room with the Little Rascals.\u00c2\u00a0 You knew about the shows coming to town, you knew the new tunes, you BELONGED!<\/p>\n<p>All that is gone on Sirius XM.\u00c2\u00a0 The growth of the service, the buzz, is history.\u00c2\u00a0 What they&#8217;ve got now is a replication of what&#8217;s on the FM band, but sans commercials.\u00c2\u00a0 With all the research they&#8217;ve done, don&#8217;t they realize people hate terrestrial radio and are tuning it out?\u00c2\u00a0 Why?\u00c2\u00a0 Because of the short playlists, the endless repetition and the jive deejays.\u00c2\u00a0 All of which have been transferred to most Sirius XM channels.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to spread the word on the service, because not only do most people not want to pay for radio, those that ARE paying are PISSED!<\/p>\n<p>Satellite radio isn&#8217;t going to be sold by the media.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s going to be sold by its fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Until the fans are motivated to spread the word, Sirius XM is screwed.<\/p>\n<p>Where&#8217;s the Sirius XM social network?\u00c2\u00a0 Where are the bumper stickers, quoting Howard Stern?<\/p>\n<p>NOW is the time to play up the Howard angle.\u00c2\u00a0 When we&#8217;ve got a vast wasteland in the mainstream and Howard is better than ever.\u00c2\u00a0 Where&#8217;s the site with Howard clips, other interactive features to grow his presence and audience?<\/p>\n<p>As for music&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Do we really need to hear &quot;Won&#8217;t Get Fooled Again&quot; on Classic Vinyl?\u00c2\u00a0 Certain tracks NEVER need to be played again.\u00c2\u00a0 What gets a listener motivated is when he hears something that jogs his memory, that he wasn&#8217;t expecting.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead of analyzing tune-outs, the team at Sirius XM should be analyzing TUNE-INS!\u00c2\u00a0 What makes people fire up the service, what makes them keep subscribing?\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t live on fear.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to be focused on growth, not loss.<\/p>\n<p>No more cliches.\u00c2\u00a0 No more stupid bumpers.\u00c2\u00a0 If satellite radio is not hip and different, not an exotic club that you feel proud to be a member of, it&#8217;s got no future.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are economics involved.\u00c2\u00a0 But the key element of Sirius XM&#8217;s survival is the programming.\u00c2\u00a0 And too much of it is repetitive, without hooks.<\/p>\n<p>Where&#8217;s the stunting on Sirius XM?\u00c2\u00a0 The type of event that built MTV, but is absent on satellite?\u00c2\u00a0 Like giving away an artist&#8217;s house, or allowing a fan to be a roadie or&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about buzz more than superstardom.<\/p>\n<p>I love satellite radio.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s light years better than any computerized service.\u00c2\u00a0 But it&#8217;s got a bad image and now the programming is too mediocre on too many stations.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like they&#8217;re living in the twentieth century.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s no hipness, no edge.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re doomed unless they motivate and involve their audience.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It needs to be a tribe.
