{"id":2001,"date":"2009-06-04T07:27:18","date_gmt":"2009-06-04T15:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=2001"},"modified":"2009-06-04T07:27:18","modified_gmt":"2009-06-04T15:27:18","slug":"god-dont-never-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/04\/god-dont-never-change\/","title":{"rendered":"God Don&#8217;t Never Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GIVE YOUR MUSIC AWAY!<\/p>\n<p>Please, if you&#8217;re an indie artist, if you&#8217;re not signed to a major label (which probably won&#8217;t allow you to do this), PLEASE put up downloadable MP3s on your homepage.\u00c2\u00a0 Put all your tracks on MySpace.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost impossible to be recognized, to get any attention in this overloaded world, and you want people to pay first, in order to check your music out?<\/p>\n<p>If someone&#8217;s a fan, they&#8217;ll give you ALL their money!\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ll buy the CD to display in their home, even if they never fire up their CD player anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ll buy merch to support you, to show how much they love you.\u00c2\u00a0 And they&#8217;ll buy music for their friends, trying to share the joy with them!\u00c2\u00a0 It all starts with the music, but you&#8217;ve got to make the music AVAILABLE!<\/p>\n<p>I got this CD from Ashley Cleveland.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though her husband has the last name Greenberg, Ashley is a Christian, and after losing her deal with Atlantic, she started making religious music.\u00c2\u00a0 Not that religious music sounds like it used to, but I&#8217;m not big on being preached to.\u00c2\u00a0 And do I really want to play an album entitled &quot;God Don&#8217;t Never Change&quot;?\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m more interested in questioning whether he exists, not whether fundamentalists are refusing to reinterpret his word, as passed down by a flock who never saw his human manifestation walk across water.<\/p>\n<p>If I didn&#8217;t love so much of Ashley&#8217;s work, I wouldn&#8217;t have played this album.\u00c2\u00a0 But when I did, I was stunned!\u00c2\u00a0 This was ROCK AND ROLL!<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mean let&#8217;s get fucked up and burn down the house music, I&#8217;m just speaking of music that speaks to your genitalia as well as your heart. Rock and roll&#8217;s got soul.\u00c2\u00a0 The instrumentation takes you away from the world you&#8217;re presently inhabiting, whisking you to a virtual bar, where you&#8217;re on your way up, where your body can&#8217;t help but MOVE!<\/p>\n<p>Kenny Greenberg is an ace guitarist.\u00c2\u00a0 And his fingerprints are all over this album.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only as a fleet-fingered ace, but as producer.\u00c2\u00a0 The recording may be digital, but it&#8217;s got a warmth, it BREATHES!<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite records EVER is Ry Cooder&#8217;s &quot;Into The Purple Valley&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a PROJECT record.\u00c2\u00a0 A veritable CONCEPT!\u00c2\u00a0 A rerecording of Dust Bowl era tunes which fit not at all into the early seventies landscape, but end up sounding timeless today.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;God Don&#8217;t Never Change&quot; is a similar record.\u00c2\u00a0 Ashley and Kenny heard a public radio broadcast about old black gospel music and said to themselves, LET&#8217;S MAKE AN ALBUM OF THIS!<\/p>\n<p>Bad concept if you&#8217;re an executive, brilliant if you&#8217;re a musician.<\/p>\n<p>You see this idea doesn&#8217;t work on paper, you can&#8217;t even describe it, you&#8217;ve got to HEAR IT!\u00c2\u00a0 A musician can hear the finished product before he&#8217;s even laid down a lick.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the TALENT!\u00c2\u00a0 And what Ashley and Kenny envisioned ROCKS!<\/p>\n<p>Is it made for Top Forty?<\/p>\n<p>Is it made for Country?<\/p>\n<p>Is it even made for CHRISTIAN?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see ANY format as being appropriate.\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;God Don&#8217;t Never Change&quot; exists in its own rarified air.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s something that&#8217;s sold by word of mouth.\u00c2\u00a0 But Ashley and Kenny are stopping it dead in its tracks, by not allowing people to HEAR IT!<\/p>\n<p>You can only hear samples on Ashley&#8217;s site.\u00c2\u00a0 And what about that report today that said thirty second samples don&#8217;t close people?<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/hypebot\/2009\/06\/longer-higher-quality-music-samples-lead-to-more-sales-study-finds.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Longer, Higher Quality Music Samples Lead To More Sales, Study Finds\">Longer, Higher Quality Music Samples Lead To More Sales, Study Finds<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But forget the big corporations, what about STRUGGLING musicians?<\/p>\n<p>If something is good, if people like it, they&#8217;ll tell everybody they know about it.\u00c2\u00a0 Because there are very few good things out there!<\/p>\n<p>&quot;God Don&#8217;t Never Change&quot; is good.\u00c2\u00a0 Play the opening track, &quot;My God Called Me This Morning&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But first play &quot;Samson and Delilah&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Which is like a Christian version of Rod Stewart&#8217;s &quot;Cut Across Shorty&quot;, but with more RESONANCE, more AIR!<\/p>\n<p>The future isn&#8217;t radio, it&#8217;s not television.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s one to one.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s from me to you, kind of like that &quot;BusinessWeek&quot; story about Apple and Google allowing customers to trade apps.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/technology\/content\/jun2009\/tc2009062_417984.htm?chan=technology_technology+index+page_top+stories\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Apple, Google Consider App-Sharing Tools\">Apple, Google Consider App-Sharing Tools<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The key is to build the infrastructure, to get the product in people&#8217;s hands.\u00c2\u00a0 Focusing on money first ALWAYS HOLDS YOU BACK!<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashleycleveland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Ashley Cleveland\">Ashley Cleveland<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GIVE YOUR MUSIC AWAY!
