{"id":1920,"date":"2009-05-04T11:30:34","date_gmt":"2009-05-04T19:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=1920"},"modified":"2009-05-04T11:30:34","modified_gmt":"2009-05-04T19:30:34","slug":"radioio-folk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/05\/04\/radioio-folk\/","title":{"rendered":"RadioIO Folk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My goal is to stay off the phone.\u00c2\u00a0 But on one especially boring call, I clicked on the radio stations in iTunes, something I haven&#8217;t done for years, and discovered RadioIO Folk.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but I&#8217;ve got a yearning for songs.\u00c2\u00a0 And intimacy.\u00c2\u00a0 And I find just about each and every cut on this station not only listenable, but fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>Googling RadioIO I found out it was a complete service, a competitor to both satellite and Slacker and others I guess I haven&#8217;t yet discovered.\u00c2\u00a0 How these companies all plan to make a profit, I don&#8217;t know.\u00c2\u00a0 But I will tell you this, if there&#8217;s a future for radio, it will not be the Pandora\/LastFM model, it will be tracks handpicked by humans, like RadioIO.<\/p>\n<p>Radio isn&#8217;t an endless string of songs interspersed between commercials.\u00c2\u00a0 Radio needs to be a religion if it is to survive.\u00c2\u00a0 It can&#8217;t be the only alternative in the car, it no longer is, it&#8217;s got to be something people WANT to listen to.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m even enduring the commercials on RadioIO Folk to hear what they&#8217;re playing, to see what the deejay has in store.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s big winner is the Weepies&#8217; &quot;Orbiting&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 You can hear it here: <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fXQeXeO1S4U\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Orbiting\">Orbiting<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also, RadioIO has made me a Ray LaMontagne fan, someone who I actively hated previously.\u00c2\u00a0 Incredible, if you think about it.\u00c2\u00a0 As opposed to being harangued by his followers, just hearing &quot;Winter Birds&quot; and other cuts on this streaming station converted me<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lUJDAzOfhCU\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Winter Birds\">Winter Birds<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a confusing world out there.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ve got to have faith in our President, but his economic advisors are buddies with those they&#8217;re charged with regulating.\u00c2\u00a0 One feels powerless, one feels overwhelmed.\u00c2\u00a0 This is when music triumphs.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing wraps you like a blanket and soothes like music.<\/p>\n<p>Hit music bops you on the head, it&#8217;s fodder for the gossip sites, but these tunes labeled folk are made over the hills and far away, they&#8217;re about humanity more than stardom.\u00c2\u00a0 These tracks resonate with me.<\/p>\n<p>You can see what&#8217;s been recently played at RadioIO Folk here: <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioio.com\/channels\/folk\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"RadioIO folk\">RadioIO folk<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Or just click on &quot;Radio&quot; in the left-hand column of iTunes, then Folk, where RadioIO Folk is alphabetically listed, and listen.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My goal is to stay off the phone.\u00c2\u00a0 But on one especially boring call, I clicked on the radio stations in iTunes, something I haven&#8217;t done for years, and discovered RadioIO Folk.
