{"id":1579,"date":"2009-01-14T17:02:27","date_gmt":"2009-01-15T01:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=1579"},"modified":"2009-01-14T17:02:39","modified_gmt":"2009-01-15T01:02:39","slug":"steve-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/01\/14\/steve-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He&#8217;s gonna die.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what I thought after reading the following article: <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-jobshormone6-2009jan06,0,1671829.story\">&#8216;Hormone imbalance&#8217; raises question of cancer<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Apple cultists never believed Steve Jobs was ill.\u00c2\u00a0 They bought the rationalization for his non-appearance at Macworld.\u00c2\u00a0 Apple didn&#8217;t own the conference.\u00c2\u00a0 The timing of the show didn&#8217;t always fit the company&#8217;s product cycle.\u00c2\u00a0 Apple was pulling out, so why was it necessary for Steve to appear the final year?<\/p>\n<p>But the financial press never bought this.\u00c2\u00a0 Traders were up in arms.\u00c2\u00a0 What&#8217;s the succession plan?\u00c2\u00a0 How&#8217;s this going to affect my pocketbook?<\/p>\n<p>There was no succession plan for John Lennon.\u00c2\u00a0 When a rock star dies, that&#8217;s it.\u00c2\u00a0 The mercenaries at the label rush out product, in the case of Tupac, for years, but creativity stops.\u00c2\u00a0 They don&#8217;t find a new person to fill the role.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is bigger than Steve Jobs.<\/p>\n<p>But Steve Jobs is bigger than Kanye.\u00c2\u00a0 Bigger than Madonna.\u00c2\u00a0 Bigger than any act being purveyed by the music industry.<\/p>\n<p>Steve put in his 10,000 hours.\u00c2\u00a0 He joined the Homebrew Computer Club when computers were for nerds, when knowing the latest tech innovations would never get you laid.\u00c2\u00a0 And one could say Steve was there at the right time, but in his case, he created the time, he and Steve Wozniak created the first widely adopted personal computer.<\/p>\n<p>But didn&#8217;t Wozniak do the engineering? Didn&#8217;t Jobs screw his older partner?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a rock star for you.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s complicated.\u00c2\u00a0 You can&#8217;t square all his behaviors.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s smart and he&#8217;s got an utter desire to make it.\u00c2\u00a0 A will to succeed.\u00c2\u00a0 And the great ones won&#8217;t listen to anybody else.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Jobs got fired from Apple because after bending to the Board and hiring John Sculley, he realized Mr. Pepsi would ruin the company.\u00c2\u00a0 Sculley made a profit while driving the company straight toward a cliff.\u00c2\u00a0 Jobs returned to rescue his baby, but what is most interesting is Steve&#8217;s desire to get it right, his refusal to compromise.<\/p>\n<p>The rock stars we revere?\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the way they were.\u00c2\u00a0 A businessman couldn&#8217;t tell them what to do.\u00c2\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t beholden to corporations.\u00c2\u00a0 Today&#8217;s musicians do what&#8217;s expedient, they&#8217;ve got no backbone, and as a result, few believe.\u00c2\u00a0 And those that do do so for a very brief time.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone loves Steve Jobs.\u00c2\u00a0 Some people hate Apple products.\u00c2\u00a0 But there are people who hate the Beatles and revere the Stones.\u00c2\u00a0 Some can&#8217;t stand Elton John.\u00c2\u00a0 And there are curious cases like the Carpenters, excoriated during their peak but adored after the passing of their key component.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Jobs has always striven for excellence.\u00c2\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t believe in market research, he believes in his gut.\u00c2\u00a0 He delivers what people SHOULD have, not what they think they want.\u00c2\u00a0 Like the Beatles with &quot;Sgt. Pepper&quot;, he&#8217;s reached down deep inside and delivered the theoretically incomprehensible, like the iPhone. Furthermore, it worked!<\/p>\n<p>If Steve Jobs dies it&#8217;s going to be a day of mourning eclipsing the rites surrounding those of the latest O.D&#8217;ed musician.\u00c2\u00a0 It will be like the loss of Lennon.\u00c2\u00a0 We will feel collectively that we&#8217;ve lost something, that can&#8217;t be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>In a world of second-rate products, where people only care about the bottom line, where excellence is for pussies, I revere Steve Jobs and Apple.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s always got my attention.\u00c2\u00a0 Because he&#8217;s not resting on his laurels, but always trying to test the limits.\u00c2\u00a0 Not going on an overpriced greatest hits tour, but demanding you listen to his new material.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Jobs lobbied against price rises at the iTunes Store.\u00c2\u00a0 He lobbied against DRM.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the labels that were the enemy here.\u00c2\u00a0 And how can someone who creates the iPod, which has enriched more lives than any other twenty first century product, be the oppressor?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure Steve&#8217;s got the best medical care.\u00c2\u00a0 Miracles happen every day.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe a miracle is not even required here.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope this is a blip on the radar screen. That he can come back and keep pushing the envelope.\u00c2\u00a0 Because if he&#8217;s gone he&#8217;ll be sorely missed.\u00c2\u00a0 There will be a hole in the collective consciousness no one can fill.\u00c2\u00a0 It will be like one of those great teen songs, where the lover dies and the singer just can&#8217;t move on.<\/p>\n<p>But we must.\u00c2\u00a0 And we will.\u00c2\u00a0 But it won&#8217;t be the same.<\/p>\n<p>No one is passionate about Windows.\u00c2\u00a0 Most people can&#8217;t even remember the name of the guy that started AOL.\u00c2\u00a0 But everybody knows Steve Jobs.\u00c2\u00a0 Who made it through his work.\u00c2\u00a0 Not the trappings, but excellent product.\u00c2\u00a0 He knew when to hold &#8217;em and when to fold &#8217;em.\u00c2\u00a0 The famous &quot;1984&quot; Super Bowl ad only appeared once.\u00c2\u00a0 Take that all you stars whoring out your product.\u00c2\u00a0 Steve never caved in.\u00c2\u00a0 He created a reign of excellence at Pixar that William Goldman and the other Hollywood seers said was impossible.\u00c2\u00a0 The animation house is nine for nine.\u00c2\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope Steve&#8217;s got the same success ratio with the medical problems he&#8217;s now facing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He&#8217;s gonna die.
