{"id":1574,"date":"2009-01-12T09:07:49","date_gmt":"2009-01-12T17:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=1574"},"modified":"2009-01-12T09:12:26","modified_gmt":"2009-01-12T17:12:26","slug":"bono-in-the-new-york-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2009\/01\/12\/bono-in-the-new-york-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Bono In The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t sing and Bono shouldn&#8217;t write.<\/p>\n<p>In an era where Malcolm Gladwell reports that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to be any good, what made the &quot;New York Times&quot; believe that Bono could write opinion pieces worth reading?\u00c2\u00a0 He can come over to my house any time and serenade me with &quot;I Still Haven&#8217;t Found What I&#8217;m Looking For&quot;, but I&#8217;ll ignore what he puts down via his word processor, unless I want to laugh and be reminded that rock stars are just like us, only richer.<\/p>\n<p>I mean read about his New Year&#8217;s Eve.\u00c2\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t sound that different from mine.\u00c2\u00a0 Or yours, probably.\u00c2\u00a0 So you&#8217;re drunk in a bar&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 WHOOPEE!\u00c2\u00a0 And then you start rambling like a high school sophomore about your brushes with fame.\u00c2\u00a0 Yup, that&#8217;s what David Letterman calls them, when the ordinary meet the extraordinary.\u00c2\u00a0 But Letterman plays it for entertainment value, whereas Bono&#8217;s playing it for truth.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s not focus on his writing, how about Bono the VC!\u00c2\u00a0 Elevation Partners is single-handedly keeping Palm alive. But you can&#8217;t find a tech writer who believes the company will survive.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean how many people have been itching to show you their new Centro recently?\u00c2\u00a0 Has ANYBODY told you about Palm&#8217;s new models, just announced?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about mobile e-mail on a BlackBerry or apps on an iPhone.\u00c2\u00a0 A Palm is like a Haircut 100 record.\u00c2\u00a0 A hit once, but no one even wants to go to the reunion show.<\/p>\n<p>This is the emperor&#8217;s new clothes.\u00c2\u00a0 Why did the &quot;New York Times&quot; make this deal?\u00c2\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t Bono have to submit any samples?\u00c2\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t they have rejected this piss-poor piece before they printed it?\u00c2\u00a0 Can&#8217;t they cancel the deal now?<\/p>\n<p>Musicians complain that today everybody plays.\u00c2\u00a0 That they&#8217;re competing with amateurs employing GarageBand and posting their substandard material on MySpace.\u00c2\u00a0 The good stuff just can&#8217;t get TRACTION!\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got to believe a ton of &quot;Times&quot; writers are tearing their hair out today.\u00c2\u00a0 Their jobs are in jeopardy, but a bunch of ink can be used up by this poser?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like letting a Little Leaguer take swings in a Major League game!<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;re sitting there snickering, saying who gives a shit about the &quot;New York Times&quot; anyway.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re right.\u00c2\u00a0 The &quot;New York Times&quot; is about as prepared for the Net future as the record companies were.\u00c2\u00a0 And you know how that played out.\u00c2\u00a0 Putting Bono in the paper is like a label head insisting that CDs are great, that the older generation loves them!<\/p>\n<p>The younger generation doesn&#8217;t give a shit about U2.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe because the band&#8217;s been playing it safe, repeating itself throughout this decade.\u00c2\u00a0 Rumor has it that they&#8217;re back to experimentation, testing limits like they did with &quot;Achtung Baby&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope this is true, that&#8217;s my second favorite U2 album, and when I first heard it, I didn&#8217;t understand it.\u00c2\u00a0 But it demanded further listening.\u00c2\u00a0 And it revealed itself to me.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t say that I fully understand Bono&#8217;s piece today.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;m not interested in rereading it ad infinitum.\u00c2\u00a0 Because I don&#8217;t like the tone.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not hole up in the bunker and create something new and different, that challenges society, rather it&#8217;s about parading.\u00c2\u00a0 No different from Paris Hilton saying LOOK AT ME!<\/p>\n<p>But Paris does it a lot better.<\/p>\n<p>But we don&#8217;t think Paris has any artistic talent.\u00c2\u00a0 And we&#8217;re supposed to believe that Bono does.<\/p>\n<p>Well, his image took a big hit today.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re better off reading the playlist of the guy with cancer.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s a lot more heartfelt and interesting&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 AND COMPREHENSIBLE!<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><a title=\"Bono\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/11\/opinion\/11bono.html?_r=2&#038;ref=opinion\">Bono: Notes From the Chairman<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/11\/weekinreview\/11jennings.html?scp=1&#038;sq=cancer%20playlist&#038;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Cancer patient: Notes to Soothe the Savage Cells\">Cancer patient: Notes to Soothe the Savage Cells<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t sing and Bono shouldn&#8217;t write.
