This is no way to come back, playing it safe.\u00c2\u00a0 Phishheads don’t want to hang with Springsteen fans at some clusterfuck in Tennessee. Yes, Bruce is rumored for Bonnaroo too.<\/p>\n
No one’s special anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 No one means anything.\u00c2\u00a0 A festival is bigger than any act.\u00c2\u00a0 Which is why the best can go on sale without listing any participants.<\/p>\n
A great band is sui generis.\u00c2\u00a0 It should never open for anyone.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s not part of the scene, it IS the scene.<\/p>\n
Phish should do arenas.\u00c2\u00a0 Then its own festival.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s hard not to believe they’re doing Bonnaroo because of their manager’s involvement.<\/p>\n
You might think this is bullshit.\u00c2\u00a0 You’ll point to the gross.\u00c2\u00a0 You’ll say everyone’s happy.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll say this is the kind of thinking that fucked up our business.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s only about money, not about soul.\u00c2\u00a0 Phish should only think about its fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Not its manager’s need to sell out a festival that dropped significantly in attendance last year.<\/p>\n
Festivals are the new radio show.\u00c2\u00a0 Do a few and you can’t tour independently, i.e. on your own.\u00c2\u00a0 You fatten the coffers of the promoter, but you fuck your own career.<\/p>\n
Come on.\u00c2\u00a0 A good song is not good enough.\u00c2\u00a0 We’re in a business where greatness is important.\u00c2\u00a0 If you’re not willing to split hairs, if you’re not willing to argue the details of a band’s career, then you’re not a rock and roll fan.\u00c2\u00a0 Fans worry about the minutiae.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s only Live Nation, beholden to Wall Street, that does not care about the man on the street.<\/p>\n
You might say it’s about the hang.\u00c2\u00a0 About going to the show and getting fucked up with your brethren.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll say it’s about the music.<\/p>\n
Maybe a festival is too much about the hang.\u00c2\u00a0 Which is why Phish should not be playing Bonnaroo.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it’s the music that entranced its fans, the communal hang came after.<\/p>\n
Do you want to mix your Sweet Sixteen with a Bar Mitzvah party?\u00c2\u00a0 Do you want a vacation where you can bowl, surf and ski?\u00c2\u00a0 Come on.\u00c2\u00a0 Have a little self-respect.<\/p>\n
Phish’s comeback might fail, but let’s see if they can stand on their own two feet.<\/p>\n
Or maybe Phish is the new Jack Johnson.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe they’re gonna play EVERY festival this summer.<\/p>\n
