{"id":1507,"date":"2008-12-09T15:00:16","date_gmt":"2008-12-09T23:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/?p=1507"},"modified":"2008-12-09T15:01:22","modified_gmt":"2008-12-09T23:01:22","slug":"the-satriani-fracas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2008\/12\/09\/the-satriani-fracas\/","title":{"rendered":"The Satriani Fracas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If George Harrison can go to court and lose, what makes Chris Martin and his team think they can win this one?\u00c2\u00a0 Especially with YouTube on Satriani&#8217;s side?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s like sampling.\u00c2\u00a0 Clear the license.\u00c2\u00a0 Pay the man.\u00c2\u00a0 Coldplay could have paid Satriani and the world wouldn&#8217;t be the wiser.\u00c2\u00a0 How many people know the original anyway?<\/p>\n<p>Somebody in Coldplay heard it.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what you need to prove liability.\u00c2\u00a0 Access.\u00c2\u00a0 If Satriani was a guy working in an amp repair shop in Cincinnati, Coldplay would have a leg to stand on.\u00c2\u00a0 But he&#8217;s a guitar geek&#8217;s guitar hero.\u00c2\u00a0 Along with Eric Johnson and the rest of the shredders the mainstream is unaware of but the maestros salivate over.\u00c2\u00a0 Coldplay absolutely can&#8217;t win this case.\u00c2\u00a0 Or even if they possibly could, their image has already been shredded.<\/p>\n<p>Watch this video&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit, when wind of this story first started blowing through my inbox I took it with a grain of salt.\u00c2\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t everybody claiming they&#8217;re being ripped off? Then I watched the video, and I cracked up.\u00c2\u00a0 IT&#8217;S THE SAME DAMN SONG!<\/p>\n<p>Now Coldplay paid Kraftwerk when they took that band&#8217;s riff on their previous album, why not pay Satriani here?<\/p>\n<p>This is not a monetary issue, this is a public relations issue.\u00c2\u00a0 This is how Tom Cruise got in trouble.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s a twit who had an incredible PR person.\u00c2\u00a0 But then he fired her and now we know Tom Cruise is an adolescent with behavior problems and his career has been irreparably harmed.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know how you control this story at this point.\u00c2\u00a0 But Coldplay needs to hire a strategist.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the biggest music story on the Web right now.\u00c2\u00a0 Chris Martin&#8217;s image was already inches above the toilet.\u00c2\u00a0 Do I think that Coldplay INTENTIONALLY ripped off Satriani?\u00c2\u00a0 No.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not how the law works.
